Congratulations!!!! You should be proud of yourself, you rebuilt STI and you did it making a video with class. I love you talk to us and not at us!!! You’re gonna be a great Dad!!!!
Glad to hear that! Definitely want to build a community rather then just post videos :)
One of the best works I’ve ever seen. I sat through the entire 56-minute video without losing interest-it was truly engaging.
Perfect! Glad it was enjoyable all the way through :)
You are going to make it big on TH-cam bro. Keep up the good work! Love your videos :)
I appreciate the confidence thank you! Definitely would be cool to do full time
Absolutely loved following along on this journey! FIRE content. So exciting to watch your success!
Always happy to see the regulars still watching :) Thanks for watching!
Great job. I've been following you since you had a little more than 100 subscribers and really enjoy your videos. I can't wait for the next Supra/new car to the channel video/update. Keep up the good work.
Hey I appreciate you sticking around! One of the OGs
Been following your build, nice job man glad to hear her purr for you. Hope we get to see more STi content!
Thanks man :) not sure what the future of STI content is but I'm definitely not opposed to more!
Hey. Whats up dude.
I was just getting ready to leave my work. Just in time to came home, chill and shit.
Best time to watch this video.
Perfect timing! Glad it worked out that way 😎
Dude that was amazing! Congratulations!! She sounds so healthy!! This channel will go right up there with OG boosted boys and B is for build but highly quality. The breakdown in your videos will grow like wildfire and will become a continuous resource for so many people. Keep it up and congratulations on the kid too!
Hey man that means so much thank you! As someone who has been watching b is for build for many many years that really does mean a lot
This has been a great series congratulations on the rebuild and for taking us on the journey.
Glad you came along! Super fun to share it
Lol after I threw together my junkyard EJ255 build I tossed VR1 in it and raced a whole ice race and rallycross season on it. Granted, didn't split the case or touch the bearings but it got new pistons and rings, and all the associated contaminates. That's what the filter is for
Yea that's why I'm so lenient on break in! Pretty sure some people just break there engines in on the dyno while getting tuned lol
@@ShawnzeyRacing I watched a video from I think it was total seal about bore surface finish, and they said part of what happens during break in is a knocking off of the rough peaks from the honing process, unless it's honed in such a way to eliminate that peak. So being that I didn't hone the bores, they just looked good and I ran em with new dnj pistons and rings, and the cams were already run, I don't see why it would need a break in beyond just flushing contaminants. But the filter can do that for me so hey why bother changing it.
ohh happy day! Was waiting for the end of this engine rebuild, so happy that everything went smooth and car is running and sounding great! I hope you manage to convince your wife to make it her daily, she won't regret it!
I'll at least make her drive it once or twice! :)
Great to see it on the road now can’t wait to see your plans with it hopefully you continue to upgrade it
Not sure what the future holds for it quite yet actually! May need to sell it to keep the channel going 😭
That Subaru sounds great! Congratulations on the rebuild. I just love your style of making videos.
Almost happy to hear that thank you 🥰
Awesome work! I can’t imagine how much work that all was!
The TH-cam videos definitely make it look easier then it is...
For instance it took me an hour just to get the engine lines up and bolted to the transmission. But it was only like a minute of video XD
Just an FYI if you want to cycle the engine without it starting with spark plugs in. Push the gas pedal to the floor also holding the clutch pedal to the floor and turn the key. The engine will cycle but will not start. I do this with my STI and FRS on first start up after winter storage to cycle the oil before I start it.
That's a super nice way to do it too! Thanks for letting me know :)
I recommend using the bottom mounting holes of the aos to get it as high as possible and make sure that the drain line is pitching downwards towards the Y fitting. it will help with drainage this is crucial for proper operation. I also ground out a bigger hole into the intercooler bracket and some of the base to provide a better angle to the Y fitting, this will help the installing of the intercooler as well. 3MI Racing makes an AOS drain line that drains to the turbo drain line that is 3" lower but you will have to remove the downpipe or turbo to install it. also the IAG pcv is made of cheap plastic, I broke 2 just by slightly bending the hose when installing it. I would keep a close eye on it and periodically check for proper PCV operation and drainage. Ended up getting rid of the plastic PCV and retro fitting the stock PCV. You will need the box for that intake and seal around it very well, it will suck hot air from the radiator without it. It will prolong your engine .
Lots of great advice! My AOS used the stock pcv pieces already so that's nice I don't have to worry about that as well. Thanks for commenting 😁
Overhauled my wife's 06 outback because it was leaking oil all over the exhaust. Tried to clean off the exhaust as much as possible with purple but after first start that engine compartment smoked so bad I got concerned but it eventually stopped after everything burned off. Good job!
Yea let the heat do the work! The exhaust gets insanely hot not much will stay there long XD
For the future, you dont need to pull any fuses to keep the fuel from coming while you're cranking and priming or compression testing. All you have to do is make sure the crank sensor is unplugged and it won't send fuel or spark while you crank.
Yea lots of ways to get it done! Some other have mentioned if you hold the gas pedal down it will shut off fuel as well
Haven't tried that method either though
Watching this after just successfully putting my motor back together feels so good.
So you know the feeling of that first start then!
@ a hundred and ten percent I do🤘
The last two minutes of the video are the best, glad for you man all that work and effort comes with joy happiness and and sti 😊
I appreciate it! The end of the video definitely makes me feel good hopefully it makes others feel that way too :)
This is absolutely awesome, watched all three of these videos and I love it so much. One of the best STi rebuild videos I have ever seen, makes me want to do this to my own WRX thats running perfectly fine haha
Lol I appreciate it! Wait till it blows up though XD Unless your upgrading ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Don't need to wait if you just want to build it anyway lol
@@ShawnzeyRacing Lol, im definitely going to do stuff to it just dont know what yet. Need more sound for one, I have regrets about not getting an STi for that reason. But keep up the good work, cant wait to see whats next!
great job with the rebuild! real talent for the DIYer.
appreciate it!
Bro this was so awesome to follow and watch.. never change your filming/audio setup. those 56 mins were all enjoyable. Hope OUR STI continues to run strong.
Thanks! Gotta find some way to improve the videos though! Gotta keep growing so I can do this full time :) I love it to much to do it on the side lol
Love the Subi content bro
Appreciate it
Love your content man, keep up the good work 👍
Appreciate it 🥰
dude i was grinning when you fired it up for the first time🎉🎉🎉
It's weird even I would smile while I was editing it and I had to watch it like 5 times when editing lol
PLEASE detail the paint! 😭 That red looks so nice, but the clear coat hasn't been treated well. A wash, IronX, clay bar, compound, and polish will really make this budget build look like a brand new car. Definitely worth the work!!
It definitely needs some love. Clay bar and a buffing would be nice to do.
They detailed the car at the auction lot before it sold but it seems like they parked it under a sappy tree cause the paint does not feel smooth at all... Or the details company didn't care about the paint...
Congratulations man Ive been watching this series from the beginning very impressive this just shows you can do anything your self good job!
I do enjoy showing that these projects can be taken on solo! Of course just need a lot of tools to get it done
Congratulations Shawn! 🤘
Thank you sir! O7
Congrats bro, nicely done! 💪🏼
Appreciate it man! Always fun to finish up these projects:)
Congrats on the build! Glad it’s all together and driving 🎉
me too man! Best feeling is that first start and first drive!
Loved the journey brother ❤🎉 Congrats!
Appreciate it thank you!
Mine died Last Year Spun Bearing 110,000km. 50:50 Pure Joy when spinning clean!!! I recommend Liqui Moly Cera Tec to Stick and protect rod bearing. Hope to bring back mine This or Next Year.
Good luck on the rebuild! Make it everything you want!
I’m so glad you got it done! I feel like it was just a week ago that you got the car, all of the props for that turn around!! You made me want to do this project!
Time flies man its crazy... Fastest build I've done on the channel but that's not saying much since its the second one I completed XD
Nice work, clad you got it running so good!
Thanks so much!
awesome series it was super fun to watch! learned lots and im so happy everything's running well!
Always happy that others can learn from my videos! Definitely one of my favorite parts
Fantastic video, great job. I really enjoyed this series and am looking forward to more content from you and watching you grow.
Awesome to hear that! Always nice to know people will carry over to future builds
That’s some Midwest rust if I ever saw any😂
Great video. Thank you
Close for sure! Car is from Pennsylvania almost looks worse then the Midwest XD
Well Done! great work, keep it going bud, you got this!
Thanks :) Will do!
Heck yea brother! Congrats!
Thanks man! Love the journey and the end result is fun too lol
Think it’s a sign a video comes out on my day off
Nice! hope it meets expectations lol
I was literally about to see if you posted a new video lol this is great
Ay! glad you remembered me
Dude, the engine start was the ish my brotha !! CONGRATS !!
Makes me smile watching that even though I was there lol XD
Dude, phenomenal job. This has been an awesome series. You make it look so easy that I wanna do a swap.
One thing though! Just as a Subaru guy, I know with the boxers it's really crucial and a pain to bleed the coolant system fully. Your Cobb tuner has a coolant gage. You want it to get it 205, thermostat open, and go back down to 180ish.
Ok I'll check that out and see what it's reading! So far the thermostat is opening and it has not been going above the middle of the coolant gauge on the dash
But I'll check out the Cobb readings too see what that's saying!
Thanks :)
I enjoyed this series brother seriously
Good to hear! I'm looking forward to future builds :)
This needs to be a staple video in the Subaru community
Quite the honor lol! I didn't do everything perfect but it's at least a good example of some stuff for sure. Thanks a ton!
Great job !!! I learned a lot more about engines from watching you
Awesome to hear! Love to share what I know
great exhaust Sound,great tone.
Agreed! super happy the exhaust that was on there didn't have any drone :)
It sounds super happy man! Congratulations!
sounds soooo good! stoked on the noises it makes :)
Enjoyed the video , can’t wait to see what’s happening with the Supra build
That's going to be such a nuts thing to put together lol.
literally nothing bolted together. well see if I can remember where everything goes... (:
Hell yeah, congrats man. 🎉🎉🎉
a time for celebration!
Man your videos make me feel inspired to get a project car lol.
Good! :) take on that next project your been thinking about!
Awesome detailed video 👍👍👍
Appreciate it! 😁
Awesome job man! Baby seat yo!! 😂
Baby seats the best mod 😎
What a great series, love the build.
Appreciate it! Future builds to come :)
Nice build. From experience I highly recommend you find a stock airbox and reflash tune accordingly. Cost me a piston ring once
Seems to be the general consensus from others as well!
Here is advice. You added another intake. Get a proper remap or minimum log the car. Because it might run lean!!! And don’t rely on a Cobb accessport over the air tune. get a real remap by a tuner otherwise you will be rebuilding this engine soon again!!
posted this too before I saw your comment. I can guarantee DAM is dropping. That's gonna blow sooner than later.
As of right now the monitoring I've done says the dam is good to go at 1 so far.
I'll continue to monitor closely tho for sure
It is a Cobb tune specifically for the intake I have but not all cars are equal so 100% understand why a custom tune is the way to go!
@@ShawnzeyRacing Subaru runs a MAF (not MAP) that is just a hot wire in the intake measuring resistance with air going passed. If the size or flow changes in the intake it will read weird and not meter right. You need to get a tune specifically mapped to the engine as it reads close. Hence why some many blow up!
Really somebody with knowledge and equipment for listening for knock is needed.
Anyway! Congrats with the rebuild. Happy it’s driving. But that’s really the number 1 rule for keeping it happy. Search for Forester STI Nurburgring and you will find my old one 🤪
Love the channel! Started watching at the Sti rebuild, one question, how do you do all this work with no music!? Or can we just not hear it haha
Looking good - are you going to repair the paint on that intake in a future video?
Probably not :(
I should've done it when it was out to be honest I thought about it multiple times but never decided to commit to it
Nice bro just keep up with the maintenance and you'll be set and get a tomei exhaust for that bad boy
I do like the sound of the tomei for sure! Was worried about it being a little to loud for a daily driver but would love to hear in person too
I appreciate the build, and the visuals of the oil pan. I bought the oil pan warmer "stickers" and didn't know what surface to mount them to. Your video makes it look like there IS a flat(ter) side, I guess I just need to make the time to get to it. 👍
Hey glad I could help! Always good to know the videos can help others out :) Good luck!
Just a heads up, DON’T lube your valve cover gaskets. That is very much going to leak prematurely. Especially if there was oil where the RTV was. Good luck!
will definitely keep an eye out!
You cannot run that uppipe without some sort of heatshield. You'll bake your motor and intake and cause a knock event and boom, another spun bearing. You don't necessarily need the OEM shielding, fiberglass wrap will work (DEI titanium is the only one that's worth a damn), but the OEM ones are better.
After market up pipes come with no heat shield ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
But I can't argue with the fact it would be better with one!
@ShawnzeyRacing the aftermarket uppipe has to be shielded, too. Every bit of the exhaust inside the bay has to be shielded. It can get glowing red hit, like 1400F+, and the uppipe and turbo sit right below the intercooler and bake it. Your intake air temps will go very high when your stationary, like at a red light, then when you go to take off of it you can end up with detonation.
Good video lots of detailed info +1 on getting a pro tune these engines are fickle af . Pro tunes are not cheap but if you can find a reputable tuner with a good track record you will be better off than using a Cobb ots tune.
Appreciate it! I'll keep an eye on the tune for sure :)
Like this spoiler blocker!!
No spoilers aloud! :D
Did the coolant temp stay in range? The needle on the factory gauge should be just at the 1/4 way up.mark...if it goes to the half way mark it's running hot
yes! thermostat opened up as soon as I got on the road :) Forgot to mention that on the first drive
Congrats bro good work
happy to start enjoying it now :) Love the sounds it makes
Now for the classic sitting next to the subie !!!
I sleep in it now a days :)
congrats man great job
Thanks a ton 😊
congrats bro!
Thank you sir 😎
You should get bolts from the Software store!
There bolts are to buggy!
Make sure to Set up ur Cobb accessport gauges their very useful
For sure! I need to get a mount set up for it too
@ would love to see a pov drive of it in future vids.
I have been wanting to do a POV with some nice engine sounds really bad. I did a little experiment this video at the end so need to work on it a bit more but that is an excellent idea!
Happy to see it running and it was very fast 56 minutes 😅
My new favourite TH-camr 👍
Well that is quite the honor! Never thought I'd achieve that thank you :)
Flywheel looked torched too
Smooth to the touch it's fine only 8000 miles on it replaced with the clutch and pressure plate :)
Congrats homie!!! If you keep giving us these type of videos you’ll be great. Just don’t get fake and put on a mask for us.
Naw I like being myself! Don't think it would be as fun if I had to fake everything:)
As a subaru owner i wished i had you as a best friend :), really nice build and explaining everything, btw the aos system, why does it need to be hooked up to the heater/cooling system?
So I actually had to look this up earlier when I was installing it too! This is the first air oil seperator or catch can that I've had that has coolant running through it. And it does so to help prevent condensation and sludge build up apparently:)
A super good question glad you asked it to bad I didn't mention it in the video!
you can crank the car with firing it up by fully depressing the clutch and accelerator pedal. If my old one sat for awhile id just do that a couple of times to help build oil pressure.
Super good way on the fly! Id still want to remove the spark plugs for it spin faster and easier on a fresh build but your scenario makes perfect sense.
Well done!
Thank you thank you 🙏
Pleeeaasssseeee make sure it's tuned for that intake. If not, DAM will drop, KABOOM!
So far the Cobb OTS tune is running well but I'm monitoring the DAM closely!
Great vid its a massive hats off to you for doing all this work yourself. If that happened to mine i would give the car to my mechanic to fix so weldone. A hope the car is great for you now and you get lots of enjoyment as i do with mine. There a awsome car and wouldnt trade mine in for nothing and EJ haters havnt got a clue they shoud focus there hate on wet belts😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 weldone!
Ah man I agree! I love this thing even more then I thought I would!
You're not going to be using those crankcase breather pipes when you finish installing the IAG AOS. You may want to delete them now since you will have to take the manifold off to remove it later.
Aos does not use the breathers under the intake thankfully!
@ShawnzeyRacing I mean that one of the narrow black pipes you installed under the manifold is unused in the AOS setup and could have been deleted. Its certainly not necessary to delete it, but it gives you a little more room to reach stuff under the manifold, like the knock sensor.
Why didn’t you use the killer b oil baffle?
Didn't buy it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Didn't seem worth it or necessary to me since it'll be a daily no track use car
Also, grease everything around the throw out bearing, shaft, fork LIBERALLY!!. It makes a difference when idling with the infamous chatter in neutral.
Yea as long as it doesn't fling grease everywhere once it starts spinning good to go!
Ahhh no you should have just used the vacuum fill. I never start with the rad or reservoir, I fill through the upper rad hose first, then rad, then reservoir. Then you will still have to squeeze the hoses to bleed air out. You'll have TONS of air just filling through the rad like that, because the thermostat is on the bottom of the engine.
Yea for sure vacuum fill is the way to go that's how I usually do it. Just wasn't sure how it would go with the leak around the cap. Obviously could've spent some time to seal it better but I always have good luck with the funnel too.
100 miles never above the middle of the coolant gauge so far so good!
@ShawnzeyRacing Well, it probably worked out then. That gauge is highly filtered but yeah it's probably burped out what it needs by now. Could be that the issue is worse with my shitty stamped impellar water pump, I can't remember what you put in there.
Think the water pump is OEM I did not replace it. The. Carfax says it was replaced 8000 miles ago and it looks new so I just used it.
But yea ill check the coolant temp on the Cobb tuner see if it is reading right
Amazing video !!!
Thanks so much :)
maan not along time ago i fresh up my EJ and 2 of 3 brand new original thermostats was broken i was shoked and a litle dispaionted ofc i didn't check new part before install well i feel lucky that i had 3 of them
I'm just glad mine opened up once I started driving! Glad you got yours working too!
@ShawnzeyRacing yeah man rebuild that motor wasn't bad idea at all
glad everything is well
great job!
Appreciate it!
Awesome job! Get rid of that OTS tune ASAP and get it tuned by a professional!
Got any recommendations? Don't know why Subaru tuners unfortunately
@@ShawnzeyRacing I am not tuned as of yet, but at least for the FA20 engines one of the largest recommendations is for CStuned. That is most likely where I will be going when I eventually add some aftermarket parts. Not sure on their abilities with EJs though.
No problem I appreciate it :)
Where did you get that funnel?
That funnel is from the company Eastwood. But they are just called radiator fill funnels!
Bro what happened to the subaru still waiting on it
Supra? Cause Subaru just finished lol
Supra is coming back right now since I finished the Subaru :)
In the market to get a Wrx. Not sure what years to get or which to avoid. I am also a father and are they realistically fine for a car seat. For that reason I probably will leave it stock just like my civic outside of wheels and cold air intake
At the end I put a car seat in the STI you can see how well it fits actually! It's pretty tight. tighter then I thought it would be. It had to go behind the passenger seat as I did not fit with it behind the driver seat. I'm not super tall I'm just 6 foot.
there are really no bad model years. The 2015+ (FA20DIT) will give you slightly more power compared to the older EJ years, however the driving experience is a little different. Rev hang can be annoying. I would skip the intake. Instead, I would go downpipe, uppipe, and cobb access port.
@@ShawnzeyRacing thanks man looks like I am still in the market then
I would try to find one that hasn't been modified, if possible. Do some research on common issues and what to look for.
@ thanks for the advice
Did you give up on the Supra?
no sir! finishing the Supra next! Just wanted a daily driver after I sold my BMW and this kinda happened XD
Is it just me or did it look like your harmonic balancer was wobbling when you were cranking it at 37 minutes
Must've just been the video. No wobble in real life :)
Doesn't a 1000 mile engine break in period apply after a rebuild like this?
Break in periods are usually to seat your piston rings. So since I replaced my piston rings absolutely yes break in periods recommended.
But everyone suggests different break in periods ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
AND good morning. Lol. Thanks for not milking it into another video.
Rather make the videos as good as I can rather then as many as I can :) Glad its appreciated!
30:12 star pattern not all around
Could be didn't look up torque pattern for that ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
1:27 you snap off your ring finger? I’ve never considered that. I naturally use my middle finger. Anyway back to the content!
bro my wife makes fun of me for that all the time lol. Works better for me :)
Can't remember you verifying the valve clearances. That is critical, as you may know already.
The machine shop did that for me! but very good thing to point out
What's the IAGOS?
IAG AOS, IAG is the company AOS is short for air oil seperator. It's designed to separate the air and oil in your pcv breather system before the air goes into your intake. That way your not burning any oil :)
@ShawnzeyRacing Thanks a lot. That's definitely a good upgrade.
