You may have covered this before but do you feed hay exclusively or do you supplement with grain?

Mangalitsa pigs do well on grains and corn specifically for fat, what it was created for. He has them pastured so they mostly eat what they dig up naturally as well as fruits and nuts from trees. It's t sure about his process but I think both hay and grains would be supplements and pasture would be their man diet.

He predominantly feeds them hay in late winter and early spring with supplements of organic breads and other things he can scrounge together like sugar beets and junk produce that can't be sold in the market. He has contracts with various sellers so he has a lot of the system set perfectly already.

I'm looking at the glasses you call Timothy and alfalfa and those are for cows. that is a smart move of using different types of grasses for your pigs and convincing them how good it is took it so much for the winter time. So if one wanted to purchase large Bales like that 2000 pounds could you get a in-depth study oh what the bills are grasses are made of. And if one was to get bales of hay you mention 10 - 12 mils equals a round bale do you end up picking up behave yourself with a flatbed truck or trailer. And when is that possible that one should purchase more than they might need based on harsher winters is there ways of storing the hay Outdoors with some form of canvas that may be reasonable. And would you have the bills are paid actually lifted off of the ground so they would not create mildew or a loss of product.

I can't get mine to eat hay -- they love grass, but they make beds out of any hay I give them, even when I don't give them much else. Makes me crazy. Any ideas what I can, do short of starving them until they eat it?

Yes feed them a normal diet suited to that animal, they're not meant to eat grass. Although they can a little. Grow alfalfa and weeds instead, maybe a forage mix with radish and beans. Also try growing pumpkins or gords without much input just wild, that's natural food for pigs, and fresh corn as well.

If you feed it to them in the winter when the snows have come and you timed their stockpile forges right, then they'll eat it and subsist on it. Depending on how cold it gets some corn can be helpful. Also feeding them things you can scrounge together is ideal.

It's also important to feed pigs hay early. When they are piglets. Because it develops their stomach bacteria to better absorb the hay.

“Weedy” hay is the best hay. Monocultures are unnatural and ultimately bad for the environment. Bring on the weedy hay
