  • Cattle spend the first part of their lives on a range, where they are most commonly seen. Then they are transferred to giant industrial feedlots like this one.

This operation doesn't really bother me. It looks like it's being run very well.
I have seen feed lots that have horid, squalor conditions, with hundreds/thousands of cattle standing shoulder to shoulder in a foot of muck.
I would be more than willing to help regulate those places, but the ones in this video aren't bad at all.

Ok I have worked on many feedlots. ... that government grain lol the local farmers sell the feedlot the corn. Plus the feedlots harvest there own crops. Plus them pits called lagoons that the manure runs into gets cleaned out regularly. They get pumped through pivots. Then there’s sediment basins. Thick shit. That gets cleaned out and spread on field has fertilizer. So not as much waste as you think. Also you give each critter 8 to 12 inches of bunk space for them to eat. That’s how you judge how many head of cattle u can put into your yards. You should really talk to ranchers farmers before u just start assuming. There are many responsibilities on feedlots, cowboys. They treat take care of the livestock they look for sick or lame cows then treat them with antibiotics. Processing crew, they brand the cattle as they first come in. Vaccines etc. feeders, that obviously should be clear they feed the critters. They have rations by weight. Then maintenance department. They fix maintain the yards, equipment etc. if it wasn’t for us we wouldn’t have much meat intake. Plus China buys most of our meat.

We are not factory farms are just becoming innovative in our practice to feed the world and some people may not agree with what we are doing but yet we are the farmers and we know what we are doing. If they can’t understand why we roll the ball the way we do to feed the world then they need a mussel. Either way when they eat plants odds are that farmer that produces that had animals and he hauled there manure on them plants and that’s organic matter so there is no problem with it being spread on fields.

Too bad you do not understand feedlots. Just because there are a lot animals at a feed lot, I would not assume they were raised there. Do you see calves in this feedlots? How about calves with cows? How about calving barns? The steers (male bovines with testicles removed) in your video are all young adults, probably 18-20 months of age. Steers raised for food) take a couple years to grow. Feedlots are primarily used to "finish" the condition of the steers. Most steers are raised in pastures, on farms or ranches for about 1.5 years then sold and shipped to a feedlot company for several months of finishing. Before being shipped to a feedlot, most steers are raised on a mix of grass, alfalfa, some grain and insulage. They might be pastured spring, summer and fall then in a small feedlot over winter. Sometime they can live on a range most of their time. Most of the meat processing is done at regional processing plants, requiring transportation. As the trips dehydrate and stress the animals, they are usually dropped off at a feedlot to "finish" for up to a month or two. At the feed lot, they are graded and sorted for the meat market the owner wants to sell in. I personally do not like feedlots. I prefer grass fed animals from my own pasture.

First off. A calfs first 7 months will typically be on pasture. This is not a cow/calf operation. This is a feedlot operation. Yes they are on dirt, why? You may ask. Because they're on a high energy diet, which is not grass. Do they produce alot of feces and urine? Yes, ofcourse they do. Because they eat, and drink. That's a perfectly normal cycle. I mean, if you don't shit and piss, so be it. You do you. But before you go and over dramatize a normal, infact efficient and successful operation. Try to understand it first. Have a nice day.

I work on a feed lot. All cattle are processed when received given any needed vaccines and lice protectant. Don’t worry the vaccines have a withdrawal period of 45 days tops it doesn’t enter the human food system. When a cow does die in a pen we use loaders (John Deere 544k) to get into the pen and either use a chain, or place them in the bucket where a veterinarian does an autopsy to figure out what happened so we can always implement change and improve for the quality of life of cattle and quality of meat you purchase.

    • @MrLaxislife33

And how do we manage cows that are sick? We have own riders that are highly trained that go pen to pen daily on horseback looking for any potential illness.
