    Thanks a lot for putting together this video! Had a small leak in exactly the same front spot of the Eb key in your video. Was trying to figure out a good way to slightly bend the key to level it, and your cardboard method worked great! Thank you! 🎶

    Thank you very much, Art. I will try this today. I've bent and shimmed my flute keys for awhile now, but not with this much accuracy.

    While playing the flute, probably because of the heat, the sound disappears due to bad compression of the pads. How to fix it?

    What do you think about this method opposite of placing little paper shim under pads? Your method avoids of deassembling the pads every time. Or are they complementary methods?

      You would use the shimming method on professional model flutes. On student and intermediate flutes, you can do it either way. Sometimes, you use both methods on the same flute if there is a reason to do so.

    Awesome video, thanks! Do you have a special technique for pads that sit front and back, but are open on both sides?

      There are a few ways to deal with that. First check to see if the tone hole is level and check to see if the pad is bent. You can try partial shimming, or just put the pad leveler under one of the high spots and then the other until it is level.
      I hope this helps.

    concerning the cardboard leveling tool you made, is there any reason why you couldn't just use a small thin piece of metal or even a pad slick instead?

    • @TheBrassandWoodwindShop
      @TheBrassandWoodwindShop  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is what you do with saxophone pads, but flute tone holes are very thin and are dented easily.

      I am hoping to do a video on this in a few weeks. I am not sure exactly when, but it should be on a Wednesday when I do woodwind videos.

    Hello
    do you ever use shims to level pads?

    • @TheBrassandWoodwindShop
      @TheBrassandWoodwindShop  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do sometimes, but I usually level the pad cup. Some people only use shims. both ways work.

      Leveling the key cups seems to make more sense
      Are you familiar with the set of key cup leveling tools Ferree’s sells
      There are three sizes in the set. Is the folded cardboard your only method of leveling tone holes? Also where are you located? I have a shop in Brooklyn NY and am getting more flute repairs these days. I find your videos the most informative of all the videos on repairs. Thanks for posting.

      Hello Ruben,
      I have only used the cardboard so I am not sure how the Ferree's tools work.
      My shop is in Burnt Hills, NY about 20 miles north of Albany. Feel free to stop by if you are ever in the area.

      Hello Art,
      It seems that leveling the key cups on a flute makes the most sense. Shimming works also but I find that sometimes I have so many shims in the cup after a while so I just take them out and start over. the fewer shims the better is the way I feel.
      If I'm ever in your neck of the woods I would love to stop by and meet you and see your shop.If you are ever in Brooklyn stop by Im in Carroll Gardends 3 stops on F train from the city.
      love the videos
