I'm 62 years old I have smelt fished Lake Michigan and Lake Superior with Nets for years but I've never seen anyone fish for smelt with hook and line you definitely have a lot of patience outstanding thank you for the great video 😊

Smelt through the ice is the best! Years ago my father and rented a ice shanty near Interlochen Mi. and had a blast, one of my fondest memories of fishing with my father who has passed away now but he remains in my thoughts due to experiences like that one.

My father and his brothers took us to Point Peelee Canada smelt dipping every year for about 15 years straight. We would get home about 10.00 at night and clean smelt till about 4.00 in the morning, of course somebody was flouring and cooking them while we cleaned them. We would bring home 4 or 5 five gallon buckets full. Clean, bag and freeze then, we had smelt all year. I never knew Michigan had smelt lakes, and I never seen smelt that big, had no idea they had teeth either. We just stopped going because the catch didn`t work off shore anymore, they were out deeper, sure miss those day, great video.

I love ice fishing for smelt, whats not fun about catching 75+ fish in 3 hours, no matter how big they are! The lake by me is pretty good, but the smelt are huge. TY for the demonstration on what you do to cook the big ones =)

gosh i remember when i was a kid in the 70's and we would put out the nets for smelt and stay out all night and actually bribg home five gallon buckets full of them.. great times ..never to come again..😢

I used to fish Higgins Lake at night using a lantern at a hole supposedly the light would lure smelt. What great fun I also would use a smelt on a tip up great for pike or trout

Im going to have check the rocky river over here in cleveland. Its had rainbow smelt in it in yhe spring. Might be some down there now with the ice melt.
bars in the u.p. used to serve them instead of popcorn , peanuts, pretzels etc., put a basket of smelt on the table before you even ordered a beer......55 gallon drums were a common fill up, no doubt most ended up in peoples gardens ( who's gonna clean 55 gallons of smelt ) been decades since i've seen people dippin.......

Best smelt in the world is out of these clear Lakes in Michigan, I live in northern Michigan, by Black Lake we get them out of Clear Lake, other lakes out o u r backdoor, best eating ever I just yeah I love them

Yes! Smelt are outstanding table fare. 😊 when cooked fresh right away (never frozen), they are very mild and no “fishy” taste. Here in Michigan, they’re extremely popular.
I don't know why you waste time ribbing them, when I lived in Ashland Wi. we never ribbed them .They have small enough bones ,"even big ones" that they fry right up.
If you like them that way, that’s great! The kids definitely notice the bones on the bigger ones, so butterflying has been the solution to getting around that hurdle.

@ That exactly how we did about half of them on the platter in the video--head off and gutted! That’s how we do all the small to average size ones. Only the biggest ones get butterflied. They’re delicious both ways 😋!!!

On Higgins lake by Houghton lake they catch them alot on rods ,only at night
The Inland Lakes smelt are the best eating experience you'll ever have.. they're big you could almost fillet them just the best eating ever

Higgins is historically a great smelt ice fishery. Look for a Michigan Out of Doors episode.
