I heard several yrs ago, that the fish used in shows at like aquariums with seals the fish are actually smelt. Like to catch some that big.
@@timothylondo That’s what I was guessing they were too when we’ve seen those shows. The seals clearly love eating them! Thank you so much for watching! 😊 Don’t forget to subscribe if you haven’t already--we’ll have other episodes like this in the future.
What size hook?
@@timothylondo The plain hooks are all a size 16 fly hook. Thank you so much for watching! 😊
We always dipped. The early 70's were insane if you hit the right time. People were lined up from the Blue Water Bridge shoulder to shoulder down. Four of us working moms scissors while the old man is on the phone calling his buddys drinking ,want some smelt? Are they cleaned? lol. They were a year long staple. I dont eat them anymore. ;}

What lake is this and or what ste some of our any size pike lakes thats the first time ove heard of this....
@@calvincarter5444 We were on Lake Missaukee for this one (it’s a pretty big lake in Northern Michigan). There are around 200 special regulation no-size-limit pike lakes throughout Michigan. You can see the list of these lakes on page 14 of the current Michigan fishing regulations. Here’s the link: www.michigan.gov/dnr/-/media/Project/Websites/dnr/Documents/LED/digests/2024_fishing_guide.pdf?rev=5848d29f4ba544d8bd028998a7abfeeb Hopefully that helps point you in the right direction! (For the small lakes we film on, we’ll keep those a secret out of respect to the locals of the towns we fish in) 😎

I love ice fishing for smelt, whats not fun about catching 75+ fish in 3 hours, no matter how big they are! The lake by me is pretty good, but the smelt are huge. TY for the demonstration on what you do to cook the big ones =)
@@nothanks611 Thank you so much for the kind words! 😊 We agree--it’s a great way to spend quality time with family and friends. Hope you have a great day!
I don't know why you waste time ribbing them, when I lived in Ashland Wi. we never ribbed them .They have small enough bones ,"even big ones" that they fry right up.
If you like them that way, that’s great! The kids definitely notice the bones on the bigger ones, so butterflying has been the solution to getting around that hurdle.
So, you're eating Minnows? I never fished for them and don't think I ever saw them in the store. Maybe someday I'll try them.
Yes! Smelt are outstanding table fare. 😊 when cooked fresh right away (never frozen), they are very mild and no “fishy” taste. Here in Michigan, they’re extremely popular.

@@TAGEquipment-o7v Thanks, Tim! That would be fun sometime!
My father and his brothers took us to Point Peelee Canada smelt dipping every year for about 15 years straight. We would get home about 10.00 at night and clean smelt till about 4.00 in the morning, of course somebody was flouring and cooking them while we cleaned them. We would bring home 4 or 5 five gallon buckets full. Clean, bag and freeze then, we had smelt all year. I never knew Michigan had smelt lakes, and I never seen smelt that big, had no idea they had teeth either. We just stopped going because the catch didn`t work off shore anymore, they were out deeper, sure miss those day, great video.
