Most FLEXIBLE mic for ALL your audio needs - RED35 Review Olympus LS-P4 (& P1)

- Some of you were quite fascinating about my mic that I used in my last vlog and here I am, reviewing it in its full glory. I opted for the Olympus LS-P series instead of a dedicated gun mic solution that almost all TH-camrs use because of its flexibility and safety (back up audio files separate from the main video files) and I can also use it to record gorgeous ambient sounds for your films and projects too!

I just bought the LS-P4 today; lucky I found your channel. You do a great job - you are audible (good sound levels better than some). Your presentation is clear, understandable and easy to follow. Thanks and subscribed.
Thank you for your support, appreciate your words!
Thank you, just ordered mine and the Gutmann dead cat as well. In the 1960‘s Olympus made a small, for the time, portable tape recorder in the same design colours etc as the original Olympus Pen F/FT and market it together with the camera as “the journalist set” or so.
The ability to normalise the audio in the LS-P4 is a great feature - the only issue is that I cannot get the MP3 files onto my iPhone without a computer
I have the LS-P4! It’s great to have because it’s so flexible and discreet, which is absolutely important when you’re doing documentary or ethnographic work. I haven’t linked it up with my EM1-II yet, so I guess I should give that a try :)
Looked for reviews of this product and your video popped up. Enjoyed your presentation skills, video filming and review. Only problem is I'm tempted to buy one now. You have a new follower.
kinlung chan cheers mate and glad you enjoyed our review!
Great video. I upgraded to the LS-P4 last June for my OM-Ds. Brilliant piece of kit. Before that I used a Olympus DS-30 and couple of Zoom recorders. I still use them interchangeably with no problems but the LS-P4 visually matches the camera better.
Cheers mate! Yeah I too upgraded but only from LS-P1 that's also being used in this video. These things are tiny and just great for what they are, certainly very capable in recording hi-res sounds when set up properly, and yes, the black body matches well with my PEN-F and EM1 II.
Hi. Great review - thanks for that. Never thought that Olympus also making audio recorders. I only knew the Zoom ones until now. What I really love about external audio recorders is the option to record sounds like 'city sounds', 'traffic', 'tube announcements' etc. without the camera, so you can use them later in your videos. Have a good new week and see you in the next video. Greets from Germany, Jo
Cheers Jo. Yes they do and they are very good at it too. They are also quite popular among students and their LS-P1 is very nice and 'cheap'. Indeed, I use the LS-P4 to record a lot of ambient noises for videos and it just great for that alone but acting as a mic too, double the joy! Thanks for your support :) Greetings from London!
Are the sound recording and video automatically synchronized? I noticed on one of Olympus own videos here on TH-cam that the guy had to manually synchronize the video and sound recording and I want to avoid that as much as possible. Are there any difference in sound quality between the sound and the backup sound?
Maybe a stupid question but can you tell me how to connect with a FujiTX3 best?
i know I'm pretty off topic but does anyone know a good website to stream new tv shows online?
@Scott Uriah Lately I have been using flixzone. You can find it by googling :)
Simplicity creates great things(=audio) 👏
marioplus321 cheers mate! Have a lovely day
Hi does this record I. WAV format
I tried to used it a couple of weeks ago, tested everything at home and then on an actual conference shoot it wasn't recording the sound into the camera, but I was also far away from the speakers, so I was able to leave the whole unit at the stand and record audio from there and later sync it. The quality is great for sure.
Anastas Tarpanov hi Anastas, you need to turn the device on and make sure you have pressed Record button at least once (the screen should say “Pause” and that will make sure the sound is going through. You should be able to check the camera volume bars too. You can press the record button again to record to the device at the same time. So you will have one in the video file and one separate voice file in the device :) hope it helps.
I did this of course, the recorder was recording itself, there was just no sound into the camera, but I can play with that more, once I have the recorder again, but definitely the zoom feature is a big winner for me.
Yep...I have one. Needed to record a few things, didn't question the brand, or researched other than it had 4.5 stars from 50 some users. Did what I needed very well.
Wow...I was the first comment? That's a first. The Notification bell works good.
The bell works! Glad to hear hahaha. Glad to hear that you agreed on this LS-P4 is a great recorder! Have a nice weekend.
Have you connected this unit to the 5 MKiii via bluetooth?
Since 2015 I’ve used the triple mic Olympus DM-670, released in 2011. Its sound quality is superb and it’s metal bodied too. I’ve just purchased an OM LS-P5, because of great experiences with the 670 and its affordability at under $300Au. It has Bluetooth 5.0 for various functions eg: remote control from a smartphone and wireless headphone connection. It records FLAC at extremely high and deep sampling rates. Sadly it lacks the metal body of the DM-670 and I’ve found it needs more fine tuning of settings than the DM-670 to eliminate or reduce certain negative characteristics eg: if the recorder is sharply moved during use a low frequency aberration is prominent-also issues with using the auto recording level setting when the recorder ‘hunts’ for optimal levels as source type and volume changes. Overall, given the amazing audio quality, especially when tripod mounted, with the affordable price and its tiny size… I really like and enjoy it.
Jimmy I can advise that the Plantronics PLT 5200 works seemlessly with the Ls-p4 through Bluetooth if you want a wireless mic solution with good sound
Cheers!
How does the PS-p4 compare to the Zoom H4n Pro? Preamps with low noise floor the same?
Little disappointed that the LS-P4 was discontinued.
Interesting video, but I think that your sound with the lavalier mic is way better than the scene using the LS-P4 mic. That makes me think a bit, because I just gut that one instead of a dedicated mic. Main reason: My Pen-f has better video capabilities than my E-M1, but lacks a mic input. Second reason: The zoom function gives me 2 mics in 1 - I can use it for voice recording as well as ambient sound.
Worth mentioning are the additional functions of the LS-P4: It has a handy usb plug (type A) integrated, that can be used for data transmission and charging. It has Bluetooth that can be used both for remote control (start/stop) with a smartphone app or as an audio player. Another comment here says that bt mics can also be used, but I haven’t tried that myself. A very versatile device!
I have the standard Robe sounds ok great at airstrips thanks for the report
Yeah, Rode mics are great, I tried it but prefer the recorder because it does multiple things that I want at the same time. Hope you are well and have a lovely weekend!
What? The ambient sound is mind blowing. I though it was noise at the beginning - but pushing the volume up, I heard beautiful birds flutter and nature sound :O Where you using any other microphones besides your lavalier? I guess you can mix the LSP-4 integrated mics plus your lavalier?
Because this is almost too nice to believe. On a side note : Always monitor at the latest chain-link in your monitoring chain. If your audio is recorded in the recorder then is going into the camera, monitor from the camera and not from the recorder.
Sure the back-up copy is nice, but this is wise advice from my dad (40+ years a sound guy).
Hey hey! I connct my Rode SmartLav+ to my Olympus LSP4 and it doesn't record. And I don't understand why 😅 Could you please give me some tips on how to make it work? Thanks a lot!
Hi Rama, you need to use a convertor. SmartLav+ is made for smartphone with TTRS connection, you need to buy the Rode TTRS to TRS convertor for use in LSP4, hope it helps.
@@Red35Photography thank you so much! It is the Rode SC3 connector, it works now ☺️🙏
Hi i just got the same set thats the LS-P4 and the Rode smartLav+ but i cant get the mic to work it just not picking um anything and the only thing i can think of is maybe the plug is wrong and maybe i should have bought some kind of an adapter for it, can you shed any light on this for me please it would be a great help
Awesome! Thanks for this review. I have a Zoom H1 at the moment but I like the smaller footprint of this Olympus LS-P4. I might have to grab one. :)
Ed Zynda cheers mate. Yes the LS-P4 is tiny and easy to carry around
Have you tried zoom with the voice balancer set to on - seems to enhance the reach of the microphone - you can then also run the file through normalisation which creates a new file and adds further enhancement
Rode has also just release a Wireless Go which Im hoping will play well with the LS-P4 provide extra options
Cheers
thanks Barry. We had a couple of Zoom units before we fully switched to LS-P4 because of the voice detect mode and that super clean sound. Also for recording ambient noise, this thing is great due to the third bass unit. Now, if Olympus makes a wireless option!
OK, you've convinced me. Thank you. I'm buying an LS-P4 but have one question: how useful do you find the SM2 Shock Mount?
How long LS-P4 will record high quality sound from full battery to zero? I think it is good to record kids birthday party / Christmas as well some nature sound outdoor. I'm thinking this model because the size is really small and battery can be changed.
Thank you very much for his tipp. How good is the recorder for concerts?
Best regards
Andreas
Oh yes, the LS-P4 is really great for that but don't forget that positioning the recorder is key to success. As it also picks up ambient noise so if you want the best performance, you need to place the recorder close to the performers or sound source. Not directly in front of speakers (that you are almost limited to the 'processed' sounds from the system. But regardless, you will get much better sounds than any other recorders that you've tried as the LS-P4 has that dedicated bass unit that will make your recording much richer!
Thank you very much for such a fast responding. Its a very helpful answer. And I think, its the next gear for my om-1 II.
Best regards
Andreas
@@dfotos You are welcome mate. Thanks again for watching!
Mystery Revealed, thank you :-D
The secret it out hahah. Definitely not something you were thinking right :)
Yes, thought it was a shotgun mic! I definitely will look at it in the shop ;)
Hello Jimmy, I really wanted to improve the audio quality and I got myself an amazingly discounted used LS-P2 which is the direct predecessor of LS-P2, almost identical to LS-P1 but a bit better. I noticed some recordings and I think the previous owner might have thought it was faulty because he recorded in high gain and open zoom option. I quickly managed to make it work nicely.
It's not my first Olympus recorder but the one I had as a student was very vintage and practically impossible to get the files quickly. I didn't get the full kit and I wanted to ask you what kind of tripod adapter I need to attach it to camera tripod. Is it 3/8" to 1/4"? I know it was supposed to be included. I wish to use it for some simple interviews and tripod will be useful.
Is there a particular cable you recommend to connect to the camera directly?
Thank you,
your fan from Poland :)
What an excellent review!
Good video! Thanks for sharing your mic set up! We use a wireless lav mic system, bought from Amazon for our channel, its affordable, not too expensive, its the
Movo WMIC50.
What would you recommend for the best low light lens for MFT? I feel it’s not covered very well on TH-cam... I know MFT doesn’t do so well in low light, but sometimes jobs require it... and I really don’t want to leave the MFT system.
Thanks, good review, exactly what I was looking for. Just ordered one. I have a Fuji XH1 which I plan to use it with. Is there any specific cable you'd recommend to connect to the XH1?
It is just me or is the image and audio out of sinc? Is the sound recorder in this device or directly to the camera?
May be a fraction yet it was synced in post and not direct into the camera for this video. When I vlog, I do use direct connection.
Any ideas for recording bands in a pub environment setting etc Thanks
It's a great recorder but as with any recording device, that depends on many factors for great sound recordings. How close the recorder to the source and how the ambient set up is (is it an echoey hall?) but if everything is good, you can get some truly amazing hi-res audio samples.
Is it a good audio recorder for capturing ambient sounds, like rivers, birds, frogs etc?
Oh yes!! But it’s not directional like a book or gun mic. It can zoom but if you need to point at something you will need to attach a boom. But it can capture some really fantastic ambient for sure!
Hi, great presentation. You explain the LS-P4 very well. One thing you failed to mention though is that it has a Bluetooth connection. This is one of the biggest differences between the LS-P1 and the LS-P4 models. There is also some difference in the audio compression formats available.
Great overall review though. Very useful if thinking about buying.
Thanks mate! Yes, forgot to mention bluetooth!
Hi there I just bought this and cant seem to find the bluetooth setting. Can you advise? thanks
Curious, while recording through a lavalier mic, does it also record to a separate track from the onboard tresmic microphones? I own the Olympus M10 MkIII and as you know it lacks an audio input. I own a Rode wireless Go and want to record wirelessly by attaching the Rode wireless Go's receiver to the mic input on the LS-P4, but I also want to record audio from where the camera is also, just as a higher quality shotgun mic.
No because you would have plug the Rode to LS-P4 mic input and that will become the source. In this case you will need two mics, one for ambient as shot gun and another connected to you wirelessly.
@@Red35Photography ok, so plugging any source into the LS-P4's mic input will override and turn off the internal mic system of the LS-P4. This is a single track recorder I take it.
Since the Rode Wireless Go must have a device to record onto, I cannot use my Wireless Go if I want to use a the LS-P4 as a shotgun mic for my Olympus M10 MkIII.
Do I have that all right? If so, then my options are to get an Olympus M5 MkII or III to get a headphone input for my Wireless Go or do what you suggested and get a second recorder to record the person I want to mount the lavaliere to.
Hi from the UK
I have recently purchased the LS-P4 and wish to use it with my Lumix G9 some of the time instead of the camera mics. Can you tell me what type of cord you are using between the headphone output on the LS-P4 and the Mic-in socket on the Lumix G9? I have been trying to connect with a trs to trs cable but there seems to be an inordinate amount of hiss. Maybe I should be using a trs to trrs cable instead (with trrs at the camera mic-in socket)?
Many thanks!
That shouldn’t happen. It could be the cable. TRS - TRS. Check your pre-amp audio level in your camera and the volume in the LS-P4. Amp too much from a low input will have increase the level of hiss.
How do I use external mic if my camera (Oly EM10 mkii) does not provide any external mic cable?
Andrew, you can just record the audio separately, still mount on top of the camera or using a Lav mic and sync the audio later in software, very simple, a little more work but it's ok.
Andrew Sidarta clap three times when both are turned on, makes it easier to sync later. 90’s style ;)
Thank you for your great review! But how did you connect the Olympus recorder to your iphone Xs?
Frank Nürnberger thanks Frank for watching! I didn’t connect the recorder to iPhone and actually recorded it separately and synced in post after. There are ways to do it but a little tricky and syncing in post is quite straight forward.
Hi Jimmy, I'm looking at budget plug in mics to use with my EM5 mkii (preferably non powered). The LS-P4 is too much for the amount of times I'll use it. Im looking at Boya By-mm1 and Movo vxr10. Any recommendations for budget mics? What plug in mic do you prefer when not using the LS-P4? Your audio is always good :)
I've had this recorder for a while now and love the quality. The only issue I'm having now is that when I combine the audio with video from my em1 in Premier, the sync drifts...No idea why. What specific recording settings do you use if any on your recorder?
Hi from Germany!
I have a question: Do you start the recorder by pressing the start-button on your omd em1 mark ii ?
Hubert Hunklinger cheers Hubert, no by pressing the recorder first actually. It operates independently, activating the audio input so the sound will go straight into the camera and starts recording itself too. Hope this helps. J
Hi!
Hope, this is the last question.
Do you habe a amazon-link for the cable you use to connect the LS-P4 with the EM-1?
Best regards
Andreas
Here you go Andreas, amzn.to/2QhpOdl
@@Red35Photography Hi, does this cable runs for connecting the la p4 to a Lumix g80 camera? Or is It necessary a olympus camera? What is the advantage ir using la p4 with the camera against using a rode mic connected to the camera?
Is it possible to record a stereo high end audio signal via line-in? I think about digitalizing my old vinyl records. So I don't need to carry my laptop to my turntable. I would use it as stand-alone soluton to record any stereo line-in signal. Thanks in advance
Yes you can. The quality will depends on the output of your record player and cable. But you can change the 'format' of the audio file to be in such as lesser compression files formats to get maximum bitrates. If you are using the line-in, it will be converting analogue to digital, but the files should be very good.
Seems weird to me that these devices might sit on the camera but not transmit audio to it wirelessly if they don’t have a mic input. Especially since Olympus over time has removed or not added mic inputs to their cameras! Syncing in post is...friction, if you’re editing on a mobile device like an iPad. Olympus would have control over the recorder and the camera. They could remove third party pairing issues. Surely they could figure it out. #dreams. Speaking for myself, the lack of integration means I just use my iPhone as the mic.
I had no idea they made recorders
terry breedlove many don’t :) thanks for watching Terry! Have a nice day!
Hi Jimmy I need help! I recently bought the ls-p4 and it's one of the last piece that I need to start vlogging. I was wondering how did you get the lp4 to connect with the em1 mkii. I connect both those in the external mic jack and there's no audio coming out of it. It's been frustrating trying to set this up. I would greatly appreciate any help from you!
Tung Bui from your recorder, connect to the headphone jack (that’s your line out) then connect to your camera’s mic jack (input) then switch on the LS-P4, press record once to see it say “pause” that will enable the audio pass through. Your camera will start recording with audio signal. If you want a separate copy of the audio on your recorder, just press record again
@@Red35Photography I did everything you told me and when i try to open my footage up on my computer its silent. Is there something I might be doing wrong?
@@Red35Photography sorry Jimmy I just realized I got the wrong cable. I read the instructions manual and it said I should get the Olympus campaticord ka-333 in order for it to work. I was wondering what cable are you using to get the audio to work? Thanks in advance
@@tungbui994 No, any 3.5mm cables should work, make sure they are ones with 'two' strips and not 'three' like ones for smart phones.
seems much better then zoom or tascam, wich will let you down one day.
Does it have all features from the P1 ?
Thanks Lilith for watching. Yes it is better and in many ways. In fact, the P4 is the better version of P1 which has the third Bass module to record the low frequencies and also it has a larger internal memory compares to P1.
Hi! I'm having some delay issues while overdubing with the ls-p4. Is there anything i can do to solve this problem? Can you help me?
how are you using your audio? trying to match a video clip? depends on how you want to use the audio file, there can be some solutions. There are audio syncronisation with video clips in both Final Cut and Adobe Premier so that makes your life a lot easier as they will match and stretch the audio for you. Alternatively, you can record directly to your camera and you will not have the delay. Not sure if I answer your question though.
Actually, i was talking about the overdub feature inside the ls-p4! Like recording layers of music. Thank you for answering!
@@rflrngl I also had problem with using this did you work it out yet?
@@suddenlylastsummer Unfornunately it has no solution. I emailed Olympus and they told me this is "Normal behavior for this model". I already sold mine. Got a zoom h1n. Good luck!
The one you wanted a report on sounded very flat and distant
Good afternoon Bene, hope you are well. which one was flat and distant?
5 min 35s. It does sound very distant. More tests of the actual audio would be good. Or a direct comparison w the Rode VideoMicro. From the audio, it does sound very likely that Rode may do a better job.
Thanks for your comment Isaac. I actually don't think it's distant, a little muffled perhaps due to the 'fluff' in front of the mic but it cut the wind noise very well. I also used the VideoMicro, this really blows it away by miles. The range of frequencies is much greater and it can record bass like nothing else on the market. Well, I am not a sound engineer and perhaps haven't tuned it properly and I mostly used the auto function. If you go to Olympus' website, they have a demo recording music instruments. You will see what I mean.
Thanks for the video but maybe you could have focused a bit more on the differences between P1 and P4
Thanks for watching mate, the only 'real' difference is the bass module on the P4. They are practically the same thing.
You didn't get to explain that Movo thing
It's a shock mount so you dont pick up camera handling noise. Also placing it further away from the lens will reduce lens noises too zoom and optical stabilization.
One Question: How Do you synchronize the video and your speach from the LS-P4 with the Rode SmartLav+? Manually with a clap? Or do you use the waveform of the videofile of thecamera and the waveform of the LS-P4 and synchronize them automatically in your videoprogram.
Hope , you can understand, what I mean. Sorry for my bad English.
Best regards
Andreas
Hi Andreas :) Clapping helps for a starting point to edit from and you can manually drag the files to match, but we've found it's quicker to let the computer do it for you :) Both FCPX and Adobe Premiere have synchronisation functions that pretty much do the syncing for you automatically. Hope that answers your question & thanks for watching!
I found one today for 80' euros (88USA). He says never used. I do not know if for my purpose to register my lessons at the university. I just seat in front of the professor. Does it have a limiter?
MARIO COMEQ The LS-P4 has a limiter, yes.
Hmm very impressive, I used one of the Sony versions for a long time, but alas it just didn’t sound as good as the rode mic. I have this mic that plugs into my old phone which gets amazing sound.. I can’t fault it to be honest. I also have a blue yeti mic for voice overs on my TH-cam videos. Oh, and I wireless for work, but that it’s a pain in the arse but does the job, as long as I set it up properly.. my dad uses an olympus mic like that, but I think it’s the silver one, it doesn’t sound quite as good as your black one..
DREAM清醒夢LUCID cheers mate! We tried many solutions too and sometimes we do use a wireless solution but the result is not as ‘rich’ as the Olympus. Yes the difference between the silver one and black one is significant!
Very useful video. I bought my LS-P4 for sound recording mainly. This inspires me to share it with my son to use on his camera. The wind kill thingy is being given away by Olympus until end of August 2019.
Thanks for confirming that, now all I have to do is get it....:)
Jimmy - turn on voice balancing if your talking into the mic makes a real diff - I tried out the microphone in Melbourne the other day th-cam.com/video/fjGlXvKzxZE/w-d-xo.html
I could say the I am using the built in mics but that would be a lie. Truth is I never ever take video he he Have fun ;-)
haha, cheers mate, have a nice weekend!
