The Tomb and the Sentinels are the embodiment of Lest We Forget for the American service men and women. Please continue your fantastic channel!
Hi Courtney, Arlington is a place you will never forget. It is very, very large and the Tomb of the Unknown is a post many soldiers aspire to. It has a different , deeper meaning stepping onto the grounds if you have served, fought, sacrificed but made it home. Its a high honor to guard those who couldnt return , or in the larger scope have been laid to rest at Arlington. If you get the chance to go, be aware there are many ways to be thoughtful, considerate and respectful of exactly where you are. If you by chance see coins laid on tombstones or grave markers, there is a code for those as well. A penny means you are visiting this particular person, a nickel means you went to basic with them, a dime means you served with them and a quarter means you were there when they died. Do not disturb any coin you see, or flowers. I love to see your interest in learning more, you are young and I salute your fiancee for his service.
I don't know if you noticed, Honor Guard members don't have their name tag on their ceremonial service coat. That's because it's not about them, it's about honoring those who have fallen.
So great they put so much effort into this honorable duty. I am familar with the Gallipoli campaign, but didn't realize the terrible scope of the allied casualties... 188,000, not including sickness! Glad to hear they are still being honored.
Both being an astronaut and this are very specialized jobs. The amount of training is intense. Here, it is more for display, but still important. An astronaut has to know quite a bit.
Cortney, the honor and respect you exhibit towards America in general and the military itself is head and shoulders above what many American citizens show. As far as I'm concerned, and im sure I'm not alone with my feelings, you will be most welcomed in the U.S.A. I hope that one day you will live here for at least a few years so you can travel across our nation and experience first hand all there is that makes America the country that we are. May God bless you in all of the endeavours that you pursue during your life. Thank you again for all of the interesting, entertaining, and informative videos that you post.
The pin of the old guard is also the only award that can be revoked.... so even when you leave your tour there and go elsewhere in service if you do anything that could possibly draw shane on the guard and the tomb your pin can be taken stripped from you
You probably have already read the Wiki site about the history, but if not, here is the link: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tomb_of_the_Unknown_Soldier_(Arlington) It's amazing and humbling.

Hey Courtney, love watching your reaction vids. I'm sure a lot of people suggest many videos. But if you like American try reacting to Johnny Cash- "Ragged Old Flag." Its good one.
Have you ever seen the miniseries Band of Brothers? I've been watching you since you started doing the military videos (well, since before you started doing the football videos but that's neither here nor there) and I believe that you would absolutely love that series. It is the most powerful, heartbreaking and triumphant miniseries about real people and real events that I have ever seen. It took me five years to get the guts to watch it but once I did, I watched it five times in a row!
There has never been a time where the Tomb Of the Unknown Solider was not guarded. It has even been guarded through hurricanes. The worst was Hurricane Hazel in 1954 with max guests of 134 mph
You show more respect to American war dead, than at half of the current US population or more does. Thank you for that as a retired US veteran. The ANZACS are Americans closest allies and have been since WW2. When I visited NZ every single town had an awesome memorial to the ANZAC corp. Just think in WW1 the British Empire had over 170,000 unknowns from the UK, Ireland, Canada, India, NZ, Australia, South Africa, etc. There is an unknown "British" buried in the Cenotaph in London. You should do a video on that.
As I understand it. This is about guarding the bones/remains of those that died but their Dog tags as they are called were not with the bones/body so if no one was there that knew the guy they went back home to their country or were buried with no name. Hence why their families never got to bury their son or sibling. I say son as to the best of my knowledge and going back to when this was set up they were doing this for combat soldiers and back then that meant only Men filled that role. Courtney, I'm not really sure you understand who the guards remain vigilant for. The persons buried at at the Tomb of the Unknowns. Are just that, unknown. They gave up everything in the defense of their country. Their youth, their future, their lives.. Even their identity. Their sacrifice, and the duty of the Sentinel's vigilance; pays homage to all unknown US service members, that gave their lives in each of the major engagements of the United States. And to the family members who will never bury their loved ones.
