elvis's bass player jerry scheff played bass on this tune and on the la woman album. on this song he played exactly what ray was playing on his left hand.

FWIW, I believe that Manzarek actually played the bass parts using the pedals on his organ instead of the keys, which makes the fact that both hands were occupied on his trademark melodies while at the same time playing the bass parts with his feet all the more remarkable.

Yes, Ray produced seminal L.A. punk band X, and did a great job. They even covered a Doors song (Soul Kitchen) on that first album.

I've listened to the Doors since i was a kid and have never noticed the whisper track, i always thought i was just a ton of reverb

Didn't ever hear the whispers until I was tripping on acid and I heard it for the first time, cannot unhear it now.

And very dark and depressing. They were very refreshing for my 13 year old self who had overdosed on far too much upbeat and saccharine pop music like Abba and The Spice Girls.

The Doors have always been one of the more complex and deep bands I always took the dive into! One of the most shortlived bands, but easily one of the most influential with a legacy still strong.
The Doors are quite possibly my favourite 60s Rock band alongside The Jimi Hendrix Experience, and Velvet Underground because of that.
For one thing, Jim's dark imagination pretty much made the band and is the main reason why I consider them to be Metal pioneers because of how dark and morbid their music is.

I fucking love how subtly cryptic Morrison's lyrics were. There was so much ambiguity to them, but he never overdid it. Hyacinth House is just one great example.

This song will always remind me of my childhood playing Need For Speed Underground 2, it was always the first song played and it always mesmerized me. Especially when driving around at night in the rain in game.

@@joshuar622 well, "criminally underrated" might be a bit too much, but I'd agree that they are much less present in the mainstream media compared to other old bands like Beatles, Led Zep and so on. They could put up an auction for a crusty sock found under Lennon's bed; it'd be all over the news and sell for 21 Trillion dollar (error margin 99%). You don't have that kind of thing with the doors. You might get a 30 sec news bit on Morrison's day of death, if that.

Holy crap I've heard this song a thousand times and I was not aware of the whispering track overlayed on the vocal. As someone who still owns the Doors on original vinyl from when it was released i always considered myself a day-one fan. Although this was never one of my favorite Doors songs, this is crazy! It happened the same thing to me! I have listened this masterpiece “Riders On The Storm” at least a hundred times, and I was SHOCKED today when I found out the whispering was included in the song
As a kid I used to get guitar lessons at a music school, which also formed bands and organised gigs for these bands. Riders on the Storm was the very first song I ever performed in front of an audience. Memories!

The Doors are arguably one of the best if not the best rock band to come out of the US. Every once in a while with a little luck ingredients come together to mesh into a synergistic whole greater than the sum of its parts. One example is The Doors
Robby Kreiger is an underrated guitarist and somgwriter. John Densmore is an overlooked drummer who gave such a steady beat and texture to the Doors songs. Ray Manzarek was integral in creating the Doors atmospheric and ominous sound with his organ and keyboard playing. Jim brought everything together. The beautiful Dionysian Shaman front man who played words in the band. He is wholly underrated as a singer. He is up there with Sinatra IMAO.
The Doors basically lasted from 1966-1971 with Morrison. Think about how many songs and albums they accomplished in that time. It’s insane. Jim was misunderstood too. He might have had some demons and self-destructive behaviors but he wasn’t a smug asshole. He was a kind and gentle soul really. It sucks Jim, Jimi, Kurt and Janis were all taken from us too soon. Jim would be 77 now I believe. Wish he was still here.

The Doors were one of the first bands to evoke the darkness that is now commonplace in rock 'n' roll.
Ian Curtis & Joy Division were listening. Through no fault of its own , the song reminds one of the Manson Tate/Labianca murders. The end of the innocence.
There is a weird parallel to be made with the failure of the hippie movement and the darkness of The Doors, one of the quintessential bands of the 60s. It seems they were painfully aware of the shadows lurking under the ideals of peace and love.

According to the book "Squeaky"; Manson follower Lynnette Fromme was a friend of Bill Siddons, the Doors manager.

Riders is a great dark song by The Doors, but it isnt as dark as the Oedipal part of The End....and neither of those is as dark as singing the "breakfast where the news is read...television children fed...unborn living, living dead, bullet strikes the helmet's head" part of The Unknown Soldier. Imagine those lyrics coming out during the HEIGHT of the Summer of Love and only 3 years into the US involvement in the Vietnam War. Nothing else was that dark at that time...in an era of hippie folk songs and people copying Paul McCartneys love songs in one manner or another. The Unknown Soldier isnt just the darkest Doors song...it was the darkest song of the time.
Honestly to me the doors were greater than the Beatles, but that is my opinion. They were better musicians and lyrically to my ears they were on a level above the Liverpool band. And there are so many references to the occult with their songs,

"The End" be more dark... but "Riders..." has that lost soul quality and the impermanence of all with a violent edge.

The End is better
Apocalypse Now takes place in 1969 and Riders on the storm came out in 1971. The end came out in 1967.
I like 'Riders on the Storm' better than 'The End' (also a great song tho). But I think 'The End' definitely fits Apocalypse Now way better. The End is a song about pure madness paranoia and anger. The song gets so aggressive in the last few minutes it fits with the chaos and destruction and guerrilla warfare that took place in Vietnam. Whereas Riders on the Storm gives me this unknowing of what is to come vibe but in a calm way.

The reason why I love this channel is not necessarily the explanation of the background to the songs but why the songs work. I've always loved this song but couldn't explain why it works so well and then you give words to how I feel about a song and I love it.

This song was definitely a heavy one for it to be your first rock and roll song. For me this is a memorable sound that reminds me of when I was 18 yrs old and at a crossroads in life.
I was five years old when this first aired on FM radio . Hearing this song was the beginning of the end of my childhood before I even started first grade .

Rays organ playing in this song is a masterpiece. This song is more of a ceremony than a piece of music.
I saw Ray play once at a poetry reading and he busted out riders on the storm at one point and then went off on a tangent as everyone say silent watching even the poet stopped and watched and I swear he played some shit that was like doors songs you've never heard. I always put it on when I hear a storm.
Riders on the Storm was new the summer I worked in a factory that made lamps. The radio was difficult to hear over the noise of the machinery ( I operated a machine that put one screw into each lamp part and then passed it on to the next worker); it was a noisy place. The big garage type doors were behind me and always open. Whenever this song came on over the radio it was hard to tell if a summer storm was beginning or if the sound of thunder was this song on the radio. . The answer would be revealed only when Jim Morrison's voice could be heard just slightly over the sound of the machinery. Atmospheric and memorable; I can still feel this song's presence as I recall those moments.

It took me years to even notice the secondary whispered vocals. I was just walking down the street listening to Riders one day when all of a sudden I just became aware of these whispers. For sure they'd always been there, but only now did I consciously perceive them. A very odd sensation.
