I am speechless, what a composition ! Schumann's musical ear is fascinating. The choices in the direction he takes the music composition are rich. I like his use of themes and variations. The counterpoint, the voices are intimately expressive, there is no use of repetitions to make the piece longer as in Schubert. It's all real sublimed emotions every single note in both hands. Every turn brings a meaningful change, how it all holds together in logical succession. How he evolves the note that you think was important to an off beat or different key with such humility that it feels like natural process. And when a phrase contains an intentionally dissonant interval reminiscent of something tragic it is still positively expressive and passed without complaint with humility and resilience facing life and death. Something so mature that is not found in Mozart or Beethoven, they create drama and tension alright but not with that maturity. It's true that Mozart died relatively young, but he never evolved his style. This composition would have pleased JS Bach, I think he would have written a fugue from it. Schumann is the closest to JS Bach in the mastery of counterpoint, even though it's a different texture. I feel that mozart and beethoven are teenager's compositions in comparison not having the depth and maturity of Schumann. Schumann and maybe Brahms are the only romantic composers that are not trying to show off and entirely devoted to music. The counter examples need not be named we all know them. Schumann is about beauty and elevation in music as an expression of life. The beauty in some of his music surpasses real life experiences themselves in intensity. The closest would be Tchaikovsky. Scriabin also but he seemed obsessed with technical difficulty maybe he felt he had something to prove with his small hands. Back to Schumann the ending of this piece is graceful and a touching farewell.

This is wonderful. In places it reminds me of the Ghost Variations. Schumann really opened up a different musical world towards the end of his life.

I see a continuity in his work, all of it is genial.

One could play faster, but not better. Beautiful playing. Amazing late Schumann´s music, I love it.

In fact many play it slower. But it's im ruhigen tempo, not an adagio

Ah, yes. I remember idolizing Jorg Demus when a graduate student at UCLA. And the sound of this recording is unbelievable.

I idolized him as a teenager and continue to idolize him as 70-year old. How many pianists today make heavenly music of suspensions alone! (Don't get me going on his left hand, especially in Bach and Schumann!)

... nelle migliori enciclopedie - vedi ad esempio Garzanti - questi Canti dell'alba non sono nemmeno menzionati! Eppure sono tra le sublimità superne di Robert Schumann!!!

This interpretation is very high. Particularly obvious in the so uncertain pieces two and three.

The first 2 notes remind me the beginning of Bachs passacaille in c...then he is kind of improvising
