Because of 7 December 1941, the US Navy still doesn't base any of their capital ships in Pearl Harbor, only a few submarines. On our first approach to Pearl, I couldn't help thinking 'one way in, one way out... it's like being a big fish in our own personal shooting barrel...'.
The battleships weren't supposed to be in harbour all at once. They normally took turns either going out on patrol with Vice Admiral Pye's Task Force One as a group of 6 or being detached to the carrier fleet with Vice Admiral Halsey as a group of 3. However, Halsey couldn't afford to take the slow battleships with him in his mission to reinforce Wake Island, so they were left behind on a weekend that normally seen 3 out at sea with the carriers, leaving all 8 ships prime targets for the Japanese assault.
I went there about 20 years ago, I was working on a destroyer in Pearl Harbor, and wound up with an entire day before I was able to get a flight out. I am glad that I went, but I would never go again, it was very stressful to share in the pain that our country suffered that day.
My Godfather served on the USS Vestal (Repair Ship) that was tied to the USS Arizona on December 7th, 1941, when Arizona was struck and exploded. The Vestal was under full power and was able to get away from now-burning Arizona. The Japanese then targeted the Vestal in an attempt to sink her in the channel thus blocking other ships from escaping. The captain ordered her to be run aground. Afterward the Japanese turned their attention to other targets in Pearl Harbor! When you visit the Arizona Memorial you will see the Vestal's mooring platform next to the USS Arizona! Rest in Peace!
Love the way the Mighty Mo is moored to watch over her fallen sister. Perfect tribute.
AmericanThunder Arizona was not Mighty Mo's sister ship but I like your idea!
Sister ships due to same navy protecting same country I like it too.
More likely cousin but yeah I love that too
I think mighty mo is in the same spot that the Oklahoma was moored at
If they fought for the same side might as well call them sisters
I love USS Missouri when she is watching her fallen sister Battleship Arizona
Excellent videoett not to long, not to short
Was there 2 weeks ago. Very moving standing on the spot that so many died.
Paulman50 true
1177 men perished
Never forget, and God bless America and the people who have served to protect her values.
May God bless and keep all those who gave everything for us.
On my liist to come and see the Arizona

Lol I think you will find that is true for pretty much ALL harbours. It's kinda how they work....

My mom had a friend that's still on the Arizona, and have a cousin on the Utah.
So chilling!
AWESOME!!!!!! I HAVE NEVER BEEN THERE, BUT WOULD LOVE TO GO!! THANK YOU FOR THIS
Me either
We must never ever ever ever forget that day most of the crew members of the USS Arizona never woke they never new what hit them
i was there in January of 2019.
Great video. I've never been there, it would be an honor.
80 years now.
Just six months later four of those Japanese Carriers would be lost during the Battle of Midway
I was there today
This makes me cry
nicely done
That was interesting. Thanks.
And on that day, when the Son of God Almighty comes, the waters of the seas will deliver all their dead to be in front of the glory of the Messiah.
I cannot believe that the fuel is still leaking to this day.
Yes that is where US Navy soldiers lost their lives. Oh yeah and it's still leaking oil.
it will leak they say for the next five centuries
What happened to the turret and guns on top ? Were they removed ? Or have failed off into the ocean ?
Some were used on the Nevada during it's repair. A few of the barrels were setup to be used as coastal defense of the island.

That’s awesome
USS Arizona is a Pennsylvania-class battleship and the USS Missouri is a Iowa-class battleship. So not even the same class.
It's said, when the last two remaining crew members pass on, the ship will stop crying fuel oil..
In a memory of U.S.S. Arizona BB-39 (1915 -1941)
🇺🇸
I wonder if rising ocean levels will eventually change anything about the Arizona
no, they just jack up the wreck and visitors center.
81 years later
