All of the Dion and the Belmonts songs were So classic! One of my Favorite groups. A group that was touring with Richie Valens and the others when the fatal plane crash happened. In an interview Dion said in his teens he would go to the Apollo Theater and listen to the great sax players of the time. He and his group would then recreate that sound with their voices which you can tell when listening to "Run around Sue", "I wonder why", and "Lovers who Wander". Enjoy!

It was originally released as "In the Still of the Nite" so it wouldn't be confused with the Cole Porter song of the same name. As far as I know, it is the only non-Christmas song to have ever charted on the Billboard Hot 100 THREE different times! For more by this group, check out "To the Aisle" and "I'll Be Seeing You". When this song played, the "two step" you danced with your sweetheart was a moment to never forget for the rest of your life. If you weren't on the dance floor, whatever you were doing when this song started to play, you stopped everything and focused completely on the song until it was over. It was like our musical National Anthem.

Love these reactions to older music. One I love is the Mills Brothers doing 'Til Then. The group was around starting in the 1930's, and had many number one hits. Their harmony is fantastic. Their 1958 version of "Til Then, done as guests on, I think, the old Pat Boone show in 1958 is my favorite. They're older then, but still sing up a storm.

By the way on this video the pictures you are seeing are from the movie American Graffiti, and absolutely awesome movie, that truly depicts the times and life of us back in those days. With some very famous stars in there very early roles in movies, I know you would love it,.

Jaye - it was recorded in the basement of Saint Bernadette's Church (some articles say it was the school bur are incorrect.) They also recorded "The Jones Girl" which was the A side of the record but DJs played the B side and the rest is history. They had a 50th anniversary of the song at the church in 2016 and there is a plaque on the wall in the basement. Here is one explanation of how they ended up recording it there: "The song was recorded in the basement of St. Bernadette Church in the group's hometown of New Haven, Connecticut. They first tried recording the song in another New Haven building (on Whalley Avenue), but street noise degraded the recording. The church basement had great acoustics and was insulated from ambient noise, making it a perfect place to record.
The group was managed by Marty Kugell, who distributed their material on his own label, Standord Records (small operations like this were common at the time). His friend Vinny Mazzetta was an altar boy at the church, and Mazzetta convinced the pastor to let the group use the basement on a Sunday afternoon following a church service. They used the church piano along with drums, a guitar, a cello tuned low for the bass sound, and a saxophone, which Mazzetta played."

The Andrews Sisters were a generation ahead of rock and rollers and when Doo Wop hit the 50's, it became a very popular style in slow music. Dances were hugely popular and these were the songs we would "slow dance" to. Great Doo Wop groups from that era: The Moonglows with "Sincerely", The Cadillacs with "Gloria" or "Zoom" (this one has a fast beat), and The Diamonds with so many major hits like "Little Darlin" and "The Stroll". The Stroll actually became one of those popular dances in the 50's. It was a fun, double line dance that you should watch. The song is great and the dance was some of the best times!

Years ago, I worked with Vinny Mazzetta, who played sax on this recording. He told me the whole story of this record, how it got recorded in the basement of St Bernadette's Church in East Haven (New Haven annex), CT. The way he would tell me of the recording of this, it was like I was there in that basement at the time. Vinny was a wonderful guy. Fred Parris - the writer of this song, and leader of The Five Satins, never gave Vinny much credit - but Vinny was the reason the Five Satins were able to make this recording! Never cared for the backing vocals of this track, and my friend Vinny threw a couple of bad notes on the sax - but the overall vibe of the track cannot be denied. I was lucky enough to hear the whole story from someone who was pivotal to the recording. I'm grateful to Vinny for sharing the story with me.

Boyz II Men did a great a cappella version of this in 1993. Did it a full stop lower so it's got quite a different vibe. Worth checking out as it really shows off how well they harmonise. You won't believe that the sound in that version is only their voices. I actually think it's better than the original.

They actually removed that track from the album. I eventually found an older release but it was almost lost. Now we have TH-cam so it's been rediscovered. That layered background that you mentioned way back there was called a "wall of sound". It was invented early on to add flesh to the bones of a solo singer or singers. Gave songs a fullness. I came of age during this era. Used to listen to radio on a primitive crystal set "radio" and an earphone. Was a great way to go to sleep.
The Earth Angel song broke through with the never before form of singing style and music. Was electrifying back then while escaping from the waltzes and fox trots and crooning left over from the 1940s and early 1950s. This new stuff was OUR music, our generation, energetic, dynamically romantic, told stories in song, matched our teenage energy and dreams for our future.

This was actually the Satins' 2nd best song in my mind. Try listening to "All Mine" by the 5 Satins. It preceded this song, and is unique in that it was unintentionally recorded acapella. They had paid for the recording session and the band didn't show up. They took 20 minutes to change the arrangement a bit to make up for the lack of the piano and sax that were supposed to be there, and went for it. The result was fantastic.
