How did I miss Joe Val and the New England Bluegrass Boys in the peak of my interest in bluegrass? Wow, was he ever something! What a gem this video is!
...so glad that Joe said the proper rhyme word in the 1st verse,,,so many say "rippling waters FALL", instead of "FLOW",...even the KING himself says the wrong word !
I remember joe val long before he passed away and joe was one of my heroes - I hope that someday he will be inducted into the bluegrass hall of fame where he deserves to be
I agree, and so does the International Bluegrass Music Assn. (IBMA) who inducted him into the IBMA Hall of Fame (housed in the IBMM in Owensboro, KY) on October 18, 2018.
I grew up listening to Joe Val, and I love how this band had mastered the southern timing and the drive of the banjo. That is not easy to do when the band comes largely from New England. As a northerner player myself (North Dakota) it makes me proud that there are other players out there from different parts of the country (even in those days) that could compete and compare with the best of them.
It was just great to hear Joe when he and his band came to Holland. A couple of times I met them in Harpel, just a thrill to hear his lonesome sound. Very high, and loud. I was impresssed then and I still am.
I wonder how many people know that his name was Joe Valenti. He had never even heard bluegrass until he went into the army and someone used to play it. He went crazy over it and started learning everything he could. As to the name? The first time he was introduced on stage the person didn't know how to pronounce his name so they just cut it to Joe Val!
Having started picking in 1985, I never saw Joe in concert and only have old albums and stories to judge him by. This is awesome bluegrass!!!!! Thanks so much for posting !!
Karl lauber is my step-dad and it was really cool to see this video. Soooooo proud of his accomplishments in music!!! He is genius playing anything with strings:) thanx for posting this!!
I wished there was more people playing bluegrass music today that sounded as traditional as this band! No SWILL... The "REAL" stuff! Thank you for posting!
