This comment is kinda the problem.
Blaming the media is a way of deflecting from the fact that the consumers are the problem. They've become more radical and more polarised.

Yeah sure, not the utterly unhinged reality tv show star-turned president, Donald trump…
People never want to take responsibility for anything these days. Polarisation isn’t the fault of the media; people wanting everything to be sensational is the root cause. People voted trump because he was entertaining, loud and charismatic; not because his ideas were even remotely good.

I’m 33 years old and cannot, in my adult life, remember ever hearing or watching a debate or political campaign that did anything except attempt to smear the credibility and reputation of the opposing candidate. And since we’re on the subject of credibility and reputation, the media as a collective has lost every shred of theirs in the last decade through political bias and sensationalism. What this clip overlooks is how much the parties themselves drifted apart over those decades, with identity politics and culture wars meaning that whatever little was still in common amongst the parties being eclipsed by the gulfs - and worsening attitudes - between the sides in question
When your very identity is, rightly or wrongly, viewed by the other side as being inherently immoral or a threat to the nation's existence, decorum becomes an unaffordable extravagance that is detrimental to looking after the very well-being, let alone mere interests, of the people whose votes you represent
When this is the case, can you expect anything other than complete disrespect from candidates who have been chosen by the parties' bases to 'fight' for their interests against the encroaching power of 'the other side'?

Can we not pretend this is a ‘both sides’ thing? This is absolutely the fault of the Republican Party under Donald trump. They refuse at every possible moment to work constructively with democrats, and they are absolutely the people breaking accepted political norms which existed to maintain civility between the parties.
I don’t think anyone can argue that the democrats have been the driving force behind polarisation in the US when you can do clearly see how things have degraded since trump’s presidency.

Yeah literally nothing changes if Trump speaks only when spoken to and Hillary doesn't call people deplorables. The whole decorum/norms thing is pageantry; totally meaningless as anything but yet another distraction from the actual demonstrable mechanisms and systemic abuses of power, propagated by media paid to do so and the faux-centrist bootlickers they create. And just like the rest, it works well enough to help make any fundamental change and/or the prevention of near-term human extinction physically impossible.
