A lot of complaints on this season stem back to Kate's decision to not succumb to her feelings to Anthony and her character not being too fleshed out to reveal her inner monologue.....but I think this video really does explain that, and to be fair the show mentions it too....but her characterization is tied to her accepting her spinster status foisted on to her by society. She has to have a steely resolve and really cannot be compared to Daphne in season 1....which really explains why the Kate and Anthony situation draws out too.

I love the way the series contrasted the grotesque practice of young women being pressured to marry old men (especially in season one), versus Kate and Anthony being two grown-ass people who fell in love as equals, at least in terms of their emotional maturity; there was too big a disparity between Daphne and the Duke in that regard. Kate and Anthony were perfection👌🏻

I feel that her character is stronger here comparatively to the book. She is versatile, confident and content.
Not afraid of anything, ready to face tough situations.
This makes her more attractive and balanced as a character and suits her spinster lifestyle at the age of 26.
Book shows her as raw, tomboyish with more suppressed emotions; insecure about herself. It was different indeed but I expected her to be commanding which she wasn't, especially infront of Anthony but in the series she was not just commanding but extremely practical and learnt a lot of things which suited to men; lacking in her character in the book.
Though I would've loved a few scenes from the book, peeking in her most private memories and all, especially the one where she was scared with thunderstorms.

I was initially disappointed during the first viewing of S2 but upon reading the book, I will WHOLE HEARTEDLY chose the story edits in the series over the books. The series made Anthony’s trauma more believable and the way it was resolved with the right person, how Kate got/confirmed the thing she NEEDED before getting married, and the “accident” in the series is more dramatic and actually had more impact in showing how much Anthony loves Kate versus the scene in the book which was MEH.

This is what intrigues Anthony. She is smart, confident and beautiful even though she tries to play down her sultry good looks.

The other thing was that it was much easier to get married in the 1800s. You could meet at the start of the social season and get married at the end of the season a few months later. In the upper classes, it was an arrangement between families and your pool was limited. If a partner was suitable, and everyone (especially both families) consented to it, it was a done deal.
Today there are so many more options for partners. There is also the expectation of developing love and trust; and also going through various milestones together (moving out together etc) before even contemplating marriage. Considering how much time this takes, of course people would be marrying much much later than in the 1800s.
On a personal note, my husband and I met at 18, started dating at 19, got engaged at 23 and got married this year, aged 26.

I love the original meaning of spinster because it was one of the few choices for women that weren’t marriage or a convent! They could earn money which since they were unmarried, they could keep and worked in a women friendly environment (not getting sexually harassed as many maids would have been). Sounds pretty awesome to me.

    • @indiciaobscure
      @indiciaobscure 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Not really. If you were of a higher social class the only position available for you was governess. Teacher in a girl’s school was an option but it was considered less respectable because you weren’t in a private family. Or perhaps companion to a wealthy lady. You could get lucky and end up in a nice family, but there could definitely be creeps in the family where you taught. The worst part of position was loneliness because you didn’t belong to the family and weren’t a servant so you were perpetually occupying an in between status, close with neither group.

From what I know from my family tree and the stories passed down by my ancestors, they were really poor and lived extremely hard and harsh life's.
It's also not a choice. Back in the days you learned those skills from your parents and with jobs like this one that often takes time to learn couldn't really decide on something else later on.

Omg considering I didn't get married until I was 37, I guess even the terms "spinster" or "old maid" wouldn't have applied to me! I would have been called far worse. Basically the perceptions of when women "should be married" in the Bridgerton / Regency world, and the age they're considered "too old" for marriage is what China considers to be "of marriageable age" (up to age 25) and "leftover" (older than 26) respectively, today. Crazy how a world over 200 years ago still applies to some societies today.

I'm 23 and I've been a spinster for a couple of months. I was born and raised in the Upper Midwest and moved to the deep south when I was 11 almost 12 years ago. What a cultural change. In the deep south, things move a little slower and people are more traditional, judgmental and religious. But when it comes to marriage, they rush right into it!
When COVID hit, the marriages came out of nowhere. People getting married left and right, from 18-24 years old. The pressures I still feel is just high and real. I never really liked it down here, but this gave me more so of a reason. Those who aren't married are sort of viewed in a different light. Me, already being an oddball for dressing differently, having a shaved head and originally being from up north, I'm more of a double target. People are more shallow and conservative. I just don't understand why many chose and want to get married at such a young age, when you don't really know who you are and what you want, and you have no experience! People act like there's a time limit and there isn't.
I do not wish to get married right now, considering my situation and condition, but I do in the future. After I graduate college this year, I'm moving to the New England region of the states. I'll probably fit right in and find a suitable match then. It's just a shame that single women, especially when they reach a certain age, are frowned upon, just for not possessing a ring! This needs to be changed because this mindset is wrong!

I have noticed myself the term spinster has gotten a lot of unfair negative connotations, both hundreds of years ago and in the modern day when really there are a lot of advantages to being one such as being able to enjoy freedom and if you are smart enough a life where you don't need to rely on anyone. Also imagine being considered old and worn out at 26 when you are most likely still physically capable and the most attractive you'll likely ever be.

Quite insulting, actually. But as she has sold the rights she just has to smile and be show a happy face. This has happened with other books to the screen so that all that is left of the original is the Title and the main characters names. I love adaptations but to completely rewrite the plot context is poor form. Most of the laugh out loud humour was completely left out sadly.
I hope they rethink their approach to the next books. The screenwriters need to go look, at far better adaptations from book to series like Poldark, Outlander and The Secret Garden ( the first 1980's version) as there are definite changes but no plot direction changes

Because i believe she had lived long enough to live like a Noble just like her step mother, who cherished her as much as her own daughter. So he earned her nobility through her step moms love, and hence the title ofna lady in the society. Edwina is the granddaughter of the Sheffields and both lady sharma and Edwina have lived with kathani as family since edwinas birth. Hence her eligibility to be a part of the noble class tho she herself by birth was a commoner.
Had lady sharma left kate completely out and denied the sharma name to her, she would be as common of a person as any one. Hence it was lady sharma and her family being part of the nobility and her taking in as her own daughter made her eligible as any noble lady would be.

She was inspired by character Maria Rosso that didn't have that big of the role with Anthony like being his love interest that he is willing to run away with her and leave his duties behind. Just saying Anthony season 1 and Anthony season 2 love life don't have any connections and that was not good writing job.And it is very confusing if you binge watch the show one season after the other.

Then again, I think it is important to remember why men marrying at an older age was so normal and, even expected.
We cannot act like woman at that time were the only ones suffering. Especially when we talk about how people suffered from objectification and expectations, based on their gender.
Woman's only value was often their looks or their ability to provide a healthy child. So they could only marry at a young age. While for men no one would have married a very young men because they weren't accomplished yet.
You could pretty much only be an old bachelor at that time because while woman were expected to stand still and be pretty, men were expected to ''provide''.
Woman had to provide an heir and men had to provide a living.
Just like men didn't want older woman, woman didn't want young men who couldn't offer a certain degree of financial stability yet.
It's really about what is worse for you. But we need to stop acting like men had it better. In some regards yes, but not in many.

I wasn't buying into the mother being that absent and detached for so long g and the younger daughter still atta he'd to momma. This was typical bodice ripper romance without the ripped bodice. Bridgerton is nothing if not fully consensual 🙂
But Kate seemed stiff and one dimensional if not manipulative when truths were revealed that her mother didn't even know?? meh, a bit much.
Loved the other story lines though and that helped smooth the stiffer Kate stuff.
