I love the nuance in this review. However, what makes DDLJ and Raj the monoliths of culture that they have become is precisely striving for love and individuality while still trying to love and root for traditions.
Amazing video. Quick correction though: Kal Ho Na Ho isn't directed by Karan Johar as shown at 00:48. It's a common misconception, the actual director is Nikhil Advani. KJo is the producer.
I loved your review, I loved this movie, since the first time I saw it I can't stop watching it, it's the first time that a movie has marked me so much since the first time I saw My Name is Khan with the iconic couple of SRKajol, for me it is the best movie I have ever seen in my life. Although I am going through a stage in which I am trying to forget those bad moments that once affected and are interfering in my life, like forgetting someone who never reciprocated my love, I must admit that every time I see this wonderful movie DDLJ it gives me hope that one day I will find the right person who is willing to love me, care for me and accept me as I am like the love 💘 between Raj and Simran, even if years go by, I will never lose hope that one day 🙏 I can find true love. LONG LIVE THIS WONDERFUL, LONG LIVE THE ICONIC COUPLE OF SRK AND KAJOL, WHO AS ALWAYS NAIL IT, I HOPE THEY COLLABORATE TOGETHER AGAIN, I WILL MISS SEEING THEM TOGETHER A LOT💛 🙌 I am sending you some love from an Ecuadorian, a fan girl of Bollywood and SRKAJOL, born in Spain 🇪🇸🇪🇨❤🇮🇳
Acc to me the movie is not necessarily contradicting the modernism project, rather one can argue it is a way to find a balance between modernism and traditional family structure that is the centre of society in Indian society. The thing is that happy endings rarely happen in a society where women are not independent. For ex the modern aspect of freedom simply doesn't apply when the women can't maintain herself and her kids in a abusive relationship post " love marriage". Her family home PR cides moral and material support to a nonworking women in such dire negotiations. Talking about freedom of love w/o considering the practical consequently of that love have been a recipe of disaster for non-working women. Moreover the concept of love in itself is a very flimsy excuse, any relationship is a negotiation between realities and emotions, considering romantic love above any other type of love is a strictly western notion where family relationship effectively cease to exist after teenage, this is not a lives reality in India and hence srk character is a good archetype because he juggles between indicidualistic freedom and family values. DDLJ among other movies were an important precedent in establishing love-arranged marraige where lovers brimg in their family to give their love an arranged marriage premise satisfying both parties. On the case of honor killings, I would say that is the sad reality of Indian social structure at the much macro level than a strictly family level, as in most you of these cases the issue is not necessarily that the girl/boy lovwd someone rather the issue is that the one they loved in of different caste or religion as tragically explored in movies like Sairat, Love hostel and Ishaqzaade. The root of these problems lies in hardening of caste and religious consciousness . I HAVE witnessed to such issue upclose multiple times. So the issue now is not necessarily love rather who you love belong to, and movies like DDLJ played a major role in normalising love based relationships. MOREOVER evey social system comws with rheir inherent issue once issue caste based - religuous system is resolved we will have a new issue as with evolving society relationships evolve as a society I would prefer Indian society ro inculcate some western values but it destination should not a western society because that in itself is neuther complete superior or modern .
Such a nuanced review! Keep it up Mustafa looking forward to more 👏🏻
Thank you!!!
