Just look on the backcover of Moondawn, their you can see that Klaus didn't use a Polyfusion, so you are right in this. I know for sure he even doesn't had such a synth for ever.
No Technos Acxel? No Crumar GDS? Those two also cost a pretty penny (when they were new; and certainly today if one should ever be for sale). The PPG Wave were (and are) also quite expensive.
When you convert the ‘80s price to modern currency value I’m astonished I purchased a new Emu Emax and new 200W TOA synth amplifier with my street courier wages. I must have been crazy.
@AndyWhitmore Yeah! The rack mount TX816 is 8 DX7s in a box for £700. Grab a dtronics operator controller for a grand and there is your complete FM beast!
the values are the cost when new in UK - in the 70s, 80s etc - then using the Bank of England inflation calculator - converted from the price in the year bought to today's value - i hope that helps?
Makes the Jupiter-8 (may fave still, I think) seem ‘cheap’ … !! 😜 CS-80, System 55 & GX1 would be my other faves from this list (and I feel obligated to include the DX1, as well). Great video, as always! Thanks muchly, Sir! Happy Solstice Season! ☀️
It’s hard to make these lists. It’s easy to miss things. For example, my personal CS80 is with the talented Rob Rosen (Rosen Sound) being customized and upgraded so in a sense each CS80 has a different price depending whether it has been serviced and upgraded, just like the Jupiter-8 - another expensive synth now (and I used to own two of them) is the Jomox Sunsyn. But this should not make the list because its list price was competitive with, for example, the the CODE8 and others. I think overall you did a great job!
@@galaxiesmerge_original thanks for that - it was a long job & my audience are so knowledgable - & very quick to point out inaccuracies - but I appreciate the feedback!
Very nice video, but I think you should considerer another one: Fairlight CMI. It is also a wonderful and very expensive synth. Thank you for post (and sorry for my bad English)!
@@AndyWhitmore I am not talking about that one one Reverb. There is a store the deals with the vintage synths of that sort in US, near Vegas. I was there on a business trip, so I asked out of curiosity, got these prices (amongst other 20 odd synth models) - they were selling fully working one for 25k bucks, so 20k quid. This was like October or smt so pretty up to date.
So annoyed at myself for having sold my Yamaha CS80 in 2019 for what now appears a bargain £17k! It had Kenton MIDI too.... Alarming more still was that I purchased a Fairlight Series III in 1988, and with the full complement of 2MB cards at £2k a card it was around £38k. My first house cost £56k just 2 years earlier. So today I'm guessing the Fairlight purchase would equate to around £300k in today's money given that house is now worth around £500k.
@@djhaynes99 Indeed. Everything has gone ballistic in the last few years. I'm glad my "got to have one" bug has completely disappeared and I'm selling off everything.
Todays value - based on all the info available is £12k not meeting this list - re the info you give- I agree - it was the first fm synth from Yamaha - and the forerunner to the DX7 and DX1 - but did not offer the same programming flexibility as the dx1/7- however- I appreciate your input and believe u r an expert in this area!
Only Eu 50.000 for my revered C80. It‘s a disgrace! One does however wonder how easy it is to achieve such prices under the present economic circumstances. Any bidders? 😁
I have really tried to be realistic here - I've spent a lot of time researching - & if this video came out in 2022 - the CS80 would have been valued at nearer 50K & the Jupiter 8 30K plus
@@AndyWhitmore Send him to me. Although it will hurt I am seriously thinking about selling mine. I’ve learned an awfull lot from it but somehow have also always been a bit too much in awe of it to use it in anger regularly. A curious combination of constantly being worried about its electronic health and on the other hand finding it too easy to play all my stuff on an instrument that sounds so good to begin with. What’s the challenge in that? And yes. I am weird. 😁
It is interesting that people are willing to pay that kind of money to get a Yamaha DX1 when you can still get a DX5 which except for the keyboard and some not so useful visual features is the same synth for a fair price.
I completely agree - I wouldn't pay anymore than £1400 for a DX1 - & with the KontrolS 88 & a couple of DX7 plug ins - you have everything & more than the DX1 - thanks for watching!
The whole point of the DX1 is the keybed and poly aftertouch; the playing experience between the DX1 and DX5 is huge. Agree though, would never pay the current $$ for a DX1
@@DrSynth Sadly the polyphonic aftertouch was only internal - via MIDI it was just outputting the highest value as channel pressure (this is from memory so don't take it as gospel). I also found the keyboard weirdly "unprecise" in the sense that the timing of recorded MIDI data was not that great (compared to other weighted keyboards from that era) but that might have been just me. It certainly looked gorgeous and sounded - well, like two DX7.
@ Wonder if they ever get a “vintage rating”. Maybe the Deep Mind 6/12 will one day be sought after but, no. They have been produced in large quantities. PS. A few years ago I bought Concertmate MG-1 and paid $600 …. for a simple hobby machine 😳.
people would be wasting their money on these machines.. especially since they require a lot of expensive maintenance frequently. (and the newer synth generations can do what they can but better and more, for way less money)
@@AndyWhitmoreThe issue with in this case ferrari is that there are a lot of strings attached to it. You need to use official ferrari replacements when something breaks, you cannot sell it within x amount of years, etc etc. And the ferrari's are very weak cards in terms of built quality (e.g. the bumpers fall off very easily when having a little, well, ehm.. bump against something.) so it's far from a practical car, and also overpriced imho. So yes, i would not buy a ferrari.

Moog 3p ? Moog 3c ? Moog 15 was a simple system (like moog 10 or 12), a smaller vwrsion of moog 55 Emerson system was unique, so you can't say 5 were built, or even guess a price about it There were less than 100 gx1 You should have added ps3300, buchla, synclavier, waveframe, system700, oberheim evs, polykobol 2, arp2500, and many more expensive than an aks (vcs3 is usually more expensive) or a jp8 your dx1 price is wrong too Price asked and selling prices are often different It's complicated to treat such a subject, in my opinion...
happy to run my next video past you first - DM me so I can give you a preview. Re the synths you mention - I have dealt with most of the synths in an earlier comment! I'm doing synths - not keyboards.
@@AndyWhitmore what do you mean ? instruments i've mentioned are synths, not keyboards (we agree that a synth with a keyboard is a synth, as Cs80 or Gx1 you've mentioned)
@@Michael_Geyre i was referring to the synclavier (& I have been reminded that the synclavier does have a primitive form of FM synthesis too) - but I agree - the others u mentioned are synths
@AndyWhitmore I understand, synclavier FM should not be overlooked as it's not that primitive at all, it's very different to yamaha's fm approach You can use Sine waves but can generate waveforms by adding harmonics (additive synthesis) and do fm with them You can make evolving fm timbres using different tricks, you can sequence anything including sound programming, and can make sort of wavesequences, chaining many different fm sounds (it can be used to synthesis some samples in Fm) Very powerful and great sounding (much better than the vsti)
yes its a great company & their synths are legendary - however - from my research - their cost did not exceed my number 11 - the Synthi AKS - worth £21k at todays prices - however - I am happy for you to disagree if you can educate me?
@@AndyWhitmore I think value can be broken down to financial cost but sometimes value can be a more emotional in terms of how a synth clicks with the user

@AndyWhitmore thanks! And, oh, that 4 track sequencer....❤️
@@littlebritain64 absolutely!
Moondawn from Schulze is not from Polyfusion but from a moog IIIP modular
I’ll take your word for it- I try to go to reliable sources for my info
Just look on the backcover of Moondawn, their you can see that Klaus didn't use a Polyfusion, so you are right in this. I know for sure he even doesn't had such a synth for ever.
Also worth mentioning that rumour has it a more modern owner of the GX1 is Richard D. James of Aphex Twin/The Tuss fame.
worth a mention indeed!!!
The Korg PS3300 would be another notable mention.
this would have been 12 or lower at £10.5k
Prince used the Jupiter-8?
Yes!!
No Synclavier, Fairlight CMI
this is just synths - no samplers, pianos etc
@@AndyWhitmore. 🙀😉
@ Synclavier is PM synth ( wrongly named FM before the DX1 ) 👍
@@ArgumentShow didn't want to say - but I have a keyboard video coming soon - & the 2 samplers are on the list!
@ like your videos, memory lane lol
What about the Fairlight CMI? It's more than just a sampler
I know - i wanted to focus on traditional synths for this video - the fairlight will be covered in an upcoming video
No Technos Acxel? No Crumar GDS? Those two also cost a pretty penny (when they were new; and certainly today if one should ever be for sale).
The PPG Wave were (and are) also quite expensive.
good comment - they weren't on my radar!
When you convert the ‘80s price to modern currency value I’m astonished I purchased a new Emu Emax and new 200W TOA synth amplifier with my street courier wages. I must have been crazy.
I know - it took me 18 months to pay for my MiniMoog - 2nd hand at £690! I worked in a Bank & was 17 years old.
I had an EMU Emax - great reliable sampler
Thanks this was a good top 11. The craziest one is the DX1 really, seeming as it's basically just 2 DX7's!
Completely agree - I’d pay £1500 tops for that massive pile of keyboard!
@AndyWhitmore Yeah! The rack mount TX816 is 8 DX7s in a box for £700. Grab a dtronics operator controller for a grand and there is your complete FM beast!
@@newtronix yes - & I have just made a video on the TX816 & it sounds glorious!
It's way, way more than two DX7's.
@@tonicjack9823 I know some people love them!
But what about Tonto?
Is it available to buy?
@@AndyWhitmore Probably not!
Nice job very interesting.
Thanks - we try!!
Hi! Where does equivalent value come from?
the values are the cost when new in UK - in the 70s, 80s etc - then using the Bank of England inflation calculator - converted from the price in the year bought to today's value - i hope that helps?
@@AndyWhitmore thank you 🙂
Makes the Jupiter-8 (may fave still, I think) seem ‘cheap’ … !! 😜
CS-80, System 55 & GX1 would be my other faves from this list (and I feel obligated to include the DX1, as well).
Great video, as always! Thanks muchly, Sir! Happy Solstice Season! ☀️
Thanks for that- me? I’m mystified by the dx1 value! Before I heard of their value- I valued it at £1400! 2 x the DX7 value! lol!😜
Synclavier?
I was focusing on pure synths - the synclavier will be on a forthcoming video!
Where is the Schmidt 8-Voice Polyphonic Analog?
I agree - at £22k - it should’ve been on the list! Thanks for pointing out
It’s hard to make these lists.
Rick Wakeman didn't use or play any Moog modular systems. KE was the one.
really - thanks for the info
Very nice video, but I think you should considerer another one: Fairlight CMI. It is also a wonderful and very expensive synth.
Thank you for post (and sorry for my bad English)!
the Fairlight & Synclavier are featuring in a new video I have coming

Justice for Oberheim OB-X. They're harder to get than Jupiter 8s.
I had one. Sold it for $1000 in 1987. 🤪
@blueeyedsoulman
Okay I'm a little jealous. Lol They're now selling for the price of a new Honda. I so want one even more than the X8.
Actually - with those SEM chips in - they are very desirable!
I wish I'd bought it - I'm only just beginning to understand the mystic of the OB-X
I would have thought an original korg ps-3300 would be right up there in value?🤔
OMG - missed that one - sorry!
Schmidt Synthesizer (last known price for a new unit in 2016): €19,000.
yes - its been noted in earlier comments!!
Jeez I’m at no.5 and thinking real estate no, should of got into synths, can’t believe how much they are worth 💰💰💰💰
if you are referring to the moog 55 - this - out of all the synths mentioned - is the one synth I want - 😍
you can find Polyfusion System 2000 for 20 grand.
ok - there is one on Reverb for 21k - but it is not fully working - but you may be talking about another example
Oberheim Eight Voice missing and OB-X
the OB-X would not make the top 11 - the Oberheim 8 voice - possibly if maxed out!
I've got a mint 1970s Roland SH-5. Any idea what that is worth?
about £3800
So annoyed at myself for having sold my Yamaha CS80 in 2019 for what now appears a bargain £17k!
Blimey - thats some serious cheddar!
Are you The Stig?! 🏎
@@kierenmoore3236 no - I've spent Xmas with my 11 year old!! lol
Your right about the CS80 I remember they were 20k a few years back, you have to be crazy to pay 40k for one.

The Yamaha GS1 was the flagship fm synth , 90 kilo's and 12.000 Ukp in 1981 , not the 8000 Dx1
You mean the Yamaha CS80 and not the GS1, and it's weight is a 100 kilo's.
You forgot Soviet army synthesizer Gorky V1. Costing more than 5 hypersonic jets. Two were built.
i dont know anything about this synth!
Behringer; Hold my beer
Haha, Behringer always knows how to make a statement! They really push the envelope when it comes to affordability and quality.
A mate of mine recently turned down 40K for his CS80
@@AndyWhitmore Send him to me. Although it will hurt I am seriously thinking about selling mine. I’ve learned an awfull lot from it but somehow have also always been a bit too much in awe of it to use it in anger regularly. A curious combination of constantly being worried about its electronic health and on the other hand finding it too easy to play all my stuff on an instrument that sounds so good to begin with. What’s the challenge in that? And yes. I am weird. 😁
@@AndyWhitmore. Pandemic Prices … ?
@@kierenmoore3236 current prices
Magnum Opus uses many of them , just listen to Magnum Opus Panspermia

"reverred" ??? What's that?
Its a bit like Revered only wrong!! lol
It’s just a Synthi AKS on ‘On The Run’, not a massive Synthi 100…

Very cool historical view of these synths. Thanks for sharing.
Glad you enjoyed it!
What?! No Behringer??? 😉
i know - how on earth isn't a Behringer worth 20k plus?
@ Wonder if they ever get a “vintage rating”. Maybe the Deep Mind 6/12 will one day be sought after but, no. They have been produced in large quantities.
PS. A few years ago I bought Concertmate MG-1 and paid $600 …. for a simple hobby machine 😳.
@@Soundbrigade everything becomse vintage eventually - so hang in there - MG-1 - great deal
people would be wasting their money on these machines.. especially since they require a lot of expensive maintenance frequently. (and the newer synth generations can do what they can but better and more, for way less money)
So I guess you’d never buy a Ferrari- not when you could buy a 2025 Ford Capri!
@@AndyWhitmoreThe issue with in this case ferrari is that there are a lot of strings attached to it. You need to use official ferrari replacements when something breaks, you cannot sell it within x amount of years, etc etc. And the ferrari's are very weak cards in terms of built quality (e.g. the bumpers fall off very easily when having a little, well, ehm.. bump against something.)
so it's far from a practical car, and also overpriced imho. So yes, i would not buy a ferrari.
@@mr_don_key well I'm with you on that one - the older Ferrari's are actually rust buckets! But the owners could afford to rebuild them which is why they still look good! We all have a passion & mine is Synths.
@@AndyWhitmore oh don't get me wrong.. i do like synths too! 🙂 But i am also seeing that modern era synths are just as capable if not more as the older gens, and are more practical overall (and often cheaper).
@@mr_don_key I'd say its nice to have old & new! The old synths can't do what omnisphere etc can do!

when I used to pronounce it mooooog, I used to get so much abuse - I watched a video with DR Moog - to get the pronunciation correct
Bro use Behringer!!!!
Those high ranking synth’s are way too high to purchasing it 😅

you bought a Prophet 6? - you should have bought a Behringer!! lol - thanks for watching
I'm sorry but there are many mistakes on your video
It'd be long to correct everything
And, in my opinion, you've forgotten many major instruments
First, i believe it's nonsense to put moog 15, moog 55 and Emerson moog in the same list
Why not moog 35 ? Moog 3p ? Moog 3c ?
Moog 15 was a simple system (like moog 10 or 12), a smaller vwrsion of moog 55
Emerson system was unique, so you can't say 5 were built, or even guess a price about it
There were less than 100 gx1
You should have added ps3300, buchla, synclavier, waveframe, system700, oberheim evs, polykobol 2, arp2500, and many more expensive than an aks (vcs3 is usually more expensive) or a jp8
your dx1 price is wrong too
Price asked and selling prices are often different
It's complicated to treat such a subject, in my opinion...
happy to run my next video past you first - DM me so I can give you a preview.
You should create you’re own video and link it here. Not being snarky, I’d love a watch! Look forward to it. Cheers
@AndyWhitmore I understand, synclavier FM should not be overlooked as it's not that primitive at all, it's very different to yamaha's fm approach
You can use Sine waves but can generate waveforms by adding harmonics (additive synthesis) and do fm with them
You can make evolving fm timbres using different tricks, you can sequence anything including sound programming, and can make sort of wavesequences, chaining many different fm sounds (it can be used to synthesis some samples in Fm)
Very powerful and great sounding (much better than the vsti)
