This channel has been such a lifesaver! I got my Nelson off of someone rehoming him through Facebook about a year ago and I had always wanted one. (I have dogs and cats and have had MANY other types of animals in the past) So I thought how hard can it be? Boy was I wrong. I had an incident last winter where my baby went into hibernation and I had a meltdown. Luckily I was able to pull him out of it and get proper heating. There's still all kinds of things that I'm learning everyday. Nelson is typically on the grumpier side most of the time but he has his moments lol. I'm the only person he allows to handle him and that's typically after I allow him to wake up on his own. They are such marvelous little creatures. Thank you for sharing your experiences and knowledge because I can truly say it's saved me and Nelson a few times. :)
Mella Zella I'm sorry I just seen your message! I use a reptile heating lamp with a dimmer built in and a ceramic heat bulb that came with a thermometer and a thermostat I found on Amazon. The whole setup ran me about $60 but it's worth it because I can completely control the temperature down to the last degree.

Keira Mullahy You definitely should do a lot more research before actually getting one. Hedgehogs have very poor vision and can bump into things, causing their eyes to pop out. The best thing to do is make sure a vet near you is willing to treat them because a lot of vets do not! Please do as much research as possible.

hey i doubt that this comment will ever be seen or responded to but i am in DESPERATE need of someone with some knowledge on hedgehogs. I have a hedgehog named Piper. She’s about 2 and a half years old and this past week I noticed that she hasn’t been sleeping in her hut like she normally does and instead she’s been sleeping half on and half off her wheel. Additionally, in the past few days i noticed that she hasn’t been touching her food and water. Today i cleaned out her bin and bathed her. Normally she’s a very fussy hedgehog and she huffs a lot when i pick her up and bathe her. But now, she doesn’t struggle at all and it was almost like she couldn’t pick her head up out of the water. At first i thought she was just drinking the water because i had just put her in our sink (fresh water of course) but i realized that she wasn’t moving at all or trying to get out like she normally does. I immediately took her out, dried her off, and used a heat lamp to keep her warm while i looked up what could be wrong. During this time, Piper threw up clear liquid and she lost the ability to lift her head up. Around a hour ago I noticed that she was wobbling a lot when she would try to walk. The wobbling would point to wobbling hedgehog syndrome but i’m afraid that the throwing up could mean something worse. With the quarantine going on, I’m assuming that most vets would be closed. I’m scared that my baby could die and I could’ve done something to prevent it.
I’m going to be taking my hedgehog home during the winter. it’s about a 20 minute drive but i also live in tennessee where it doesn’t get too cold so i’m hoping for the best!
Put one of your worn shirts in it's cage, maybe on it's bed so they will smell you and think of the safety of their cage and associate it with you. Hedgies aren't super playful animals. They will chill and snuggle with you in your lap but they're definitely not as playful as a dog or cat or even a bunny.
First off, check your spelling. Second, it takes a few weeks to have your hedgie warm up to you. Put an old shirt in its cage so it can know your scent, so it is more comfortable/warm upped to you.

It doesn't hate you. It will like you after a few weeks, let him/her warm up to you. You can put an old t-shirt in its cage to get used to your smell.
Also some hedgehogs aren’t that playful so that could be why
