    Could you give us a tutorial on GIMP brushes?

    Dude this series of videos is much needed! I've only watched this one (and your 29 minute non-serial one), but I've learned a lot already! Definitely gonna speed up my creative process.
    Question about the bevel: is there a way to change which direction the "light" is coming from? Would that be in the bevel settings somewhere?

    • @GamesOnDeck
      @GamesOnDeck  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      With the default bevel filter, no, it does not give you that option. If you are up to installing plugins, then you can check out this one: registry.gimp.org/node/186
      That has more options. I have not used it in a while, so not sure if it still gives you that option, but worth checking out. You would have to check how to install a plugin with whatever system you are using. Normally it is very easy though and basically just putting the file in a folder and activating it. Give that a shot, might do what you need. You could also mess around with the lighting (Filter -> Light & Shadow -> Lighting Effects). There is an option in there for direction point lighting that might give you the desired results.
      Lastly, while not perfect, you can rotate the entire layer that you want beveled so that the area that you want light is facing the top left corner, do the beveling, then rotate it back to the correct original spot.

      That's actually great - the rotate option might be the one I go with, oddly enough. That is if I feel like changing the light direction is even necessary. I'm mostly just amazed at how drastically the feel of the map changes the second you apply a bevel.

    Trying to do this in GIMP 2.10 and it seems like maybe something has changed and it is no longer possible. That or they have just moved the menus around to the point that I can't follow the process. Others have this issue?

    • @Gelanabird
      @Gelanabird 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was able to do pretty much everything altering a few things here and there.... for example
      Go to Filters>Render>Noise>Difference Clouds
      Then go to Filters>Render>Noise>Solid Noise... this will give you the sliders you need to change the density and so on.
      For the colors I just had to monkey with it a little bit to get the colors I wanted. However, where i ran into issues is getting the bevel to show up. This function is not working it would seem for 2.10

    The bevel feature doesn't work for me

      look into using the "bump map" feature, then just "keep bump layer." Add bevel doesn't work in version 2.10.14

    you said that you used the 'color picker'...that is incorrect--you used the 'select by color' tool

    Hi, for some reason, when I change the colors, the colorize works only on whatever I do first. I'm pretty new to gimp so I'm probably doing something really basic wrong. Otherwise the video and the series as a whole are really very helpful.

    • @GamesOnDeck
      @GamesOnDeck  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Kristina Parker More than likely it is a layer issue. Be sure to keep your layers separate, and when you go to colorize something, you need to make sure you are on the correct layer that has the portion you want to colorize.

    • @nicholasp7095
      @nicholasp7095 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You have to select colorize again from the tool window on the left. That's what fixed it for me. For some reason it stays as the colorize tool but to colorize a second layer you need to select the tool again.

    I was able to color the land green on my map, but I can't get the water on my map to change color. I've redone the steps but keep getting the same result. What am I doing wrong?

    hi, i have a question. i just draw the map by hand and then scan it and bring in a digital form, now i worked over it with gimp and made somehow (i don't know gimp so well) the seas and they even look pretty much ok, still idk how to colour the "land" since i have only 1 layer of level :( can someone point me to any solution? thx

    I might be making a mistake somewhere but when I colorize, i keep getting this gradient around the edges. How do i get get those smooth lines that you have in the video?
    using 2.10.22

    • @Wrenzy
      @Wrenzy 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I did a lot of moving edges around to add specific details to my general continent after doing the noise step and had a similar problem because cutting/pasting/erasing/drawing all added slightly softer edges because I didn't change some presets from an old project. I found that by adjusting the threshold again before duplicating the layers and colorizing them kept the edges from getting weird gradients and prevented gaps of transparency or monochrome spots when selecting land and water for deleting on each layer.

      This is for the older version of Gimp. I'm assuming you have a newer version. It mostly works the same, but there as some inconsistencies like that. Best option is to just get as close as you can in color. I have a new series coming using the latest updated Gimp version in a month or so.

      @@GamesOnDeckCool, thanks for the reply. I fooled around with the color settings and eventually got it to look okay but I'm not exactly sure what I did. Thanks for the video though. The rest of it was very helpful. I'm looking forward to your next one.

    Do you know of any tutorials demonstrating how you would go about using a pre-existing map to draw out some continents rather than using the cloud function? Or perhaps you have a video of your own outlinig this? :)

    • @GamesOnDeck
      @GamesOnDeck  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can draw them by hand (easier with a tablet though). Or you can scan them in. Use the threshhold tool to clean up the image and tweak from there. Otherwise it is pretty much the same once you have the white layer with black lines. Just color in the continents with a bucket fill then go from there.

    • @NajebanyHajduk
      @NajebanyHajduk 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      thanks for the response! Would this process be the same for an image say that is coloured, I'm thinking soething along the lines of a map out of an existing book or something.

      I tried this and when I did the render noise the land has no lakes or rivers, and drawing them in looks silly, at least for me. Any tips?

    These are fantastic. Thanks man. Just one question, my add alpha channel is greyed out. What happened?

    • @GamesOnDeck
      @GamesOnDeck  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Shane Cogan If it is grayed out, it already added the alpha channel for you. Some newer versions do it automatically, or you might have it set to do so in your settings. Either way, it is already added if the option is grayed out.
