Thanks, Jay. This video finally got me moving on my whiteboard project, which I've been telling my wife I'd build for our home business for over 2 years now! Also wanted to build as cheaply as possible. I haven't invested in a lot of tools, just have a loyal tablesaw. This video is just what these DIY TH-cam videos are for --> inspiring viewer with ideas & tips to help us start and finish a job. Well done, and thank you for the time and effort you put in to make it concise, simple to follow, and interesting!
I watched a few of these videos and this was the best one. I just used plain 1x4's for the edge and it turned out great. A board like this would cost hundreds, so this was pretty great!
Jay, I put in my simple search words hoping to find an inexpensive way to have a large dry erase board for my home office and there you were. Excellent, concise video with all I need to know to build my own. Great job!!!
Wow Jay, I did not know you could get a sheet of white board so cheap! That would be a nice item for craft shows and one 1x2 foot board could pay for all the materials of a 4x8 sheet and a 2x4.
Very cool approach. I am also looking for a cost-effective way to create a large whiteboard that doesn't look terrible like the store bought solutions.
Another great project! I bet I can't find whiteboard anywhere as cheap as that in Scotland though. You seem to get great prices for materials in the USA.
Board Looks great. I am not here to criticize but PLEASE don't cross your arms on a Radial compound mitre saw. One kickback and a jump of the saw, you got a blade in the arm or a loss of your arm. I have seen what happens to and arm from that sort of injury. And I sure don't want it to happen to me or anyone else. But that is a great money saving Idea that turned out great. Sorry for the lecture, just don't want you to get hurt. :)
you said white panel board. Whats the difference between that and melamine? Im fairly new to this and could really use tonnes of whiteboard space in my home office
Is that board to flimsy to use as a standalone one rather then mounted to the wall? Like say I built a frame so it could stand on the floor instead, would I need to reinforce the board a lot after it is incased?
Thanks @jay bates, i got the panel cut up in 33" blocks at lowe's itself. Now will tape it up with electrical tape and nail it to the wall. Might, as well just stick it to the wall using 3M easy remove tapes.
+Jay Bates HAHA very true. Unless you plan on removing the wall or repairing huge spots where those 3M tape strips are placed. That stuff does NOT come off like advertised.
Great tools... I have couple of those boards at home, just ask the store to cut then for you. I covered the borders with a green electrical tape (can get the tape it in many colors), and i nailed to the walls. So far is been great due to the convenience of the size. Unfortunately the board will stain a bit. ( In my case I have to write about many subjects that i keep there for an entire semester until school is done) so at the end I have a hard time getting it back to its original color. Still looking for a solution that can dissolve the ink completely... I will try the Magic clean E.
Love this! I want to do this, but I was hoping to make it magnetic so that I can easily attach papers when using it. Have any idea or tips on how I can manage to do that?
You are completely AWESOME! Thank you so much for making this video. I need a large dry erase board like the one that you made but when I priced them in the stores and online they were between 350- 550 dollars! I cont afford that but I can ask my step father to make one of these for me. :D THANKS!
Nope. Just test it in the store. Go to Lowe's with a dry erase marker and test it. Then test Thrifty white panel. See which one erases better. They are right next to each other in Lowe's hardware store.
+Sim Singh I used it for a couple years before I had no more use for it. With good markers a wet rag is all you need to clean. With bad markers you might need a Magic Clean Eraser.
I could not find the dry erase board in 2 Lowes I looked at. Can you provide a link to it or tell me which Lowes you got it from (I'm also from the Detroit area)? Thanks!
David McGrath Ah... i don't see how it'd work with this. He's saying it already has the slit to slide the board into? I don't see the slit on the pictures online.
What board is that you bought from lowe's. I didn't quite heard what you say. Maybe you should add transcript here. Very nice suggestion. I will add to my wall.
+Kratna the name is a Melamine panel and you can find it at lowe's. www.lowes.com/ProductDisplay?langId=-1&storeId=10151&catalogId=10051&productId=3015239&cId=detail
I don't know if you have always done this, but only use alcohol to clean your boards. Using detergents and other things like that cause soap scum to build up on the surface, and that is what usually causes ink stains. Never use windex or other types of cleaners.
Quick question: What marker brand do you use? the brands that I have gotten have this wet look to it as if the marker is evaporating. Some are worse than others. The wet erase markers do it pretty bad and the office depot dry erase ones are the same. Any advice would be great
I'm not clear on something. Does this board already come with a clear coating for dry eraser markers? Or did you buy the Dry Eraser paint and put a few coats on it before installing? Or this board works just as is straight from the store? Thanks
+Daniel Ben Avraham This is what I used to make mine. Found it in the paneling section at Home Depot. EUCATILE 32 sq. ft. 96 in. x 48 in. Hardboard Thrifty White Tile Board Model # HDDPTW48, $13.97
Thanks i buy it in HDepot and I make it! Thanks for save my pocket $. By the way, i take one panel flat in wood to put in the back (same size) on the withe board and painted with varnile and put togheter and sellead with glue, and the with board is more stronger and the durability is for many years. The withe board in the back the material is weak (Pressed paperboard), that is because i made that. Thanks
i got the same board from Lowes. the problem is it has a lacquer odor that i am not too sure how to het rid of before i hand it on the wall. it has been sitting in the garage for three weeks and still smell the same. Any ideas ?
It's in the same condition as day one. We've found that some brands of markers are easier to remove than others but just a spray of windex on a rag and it's back to being perfect.
+Emad kamel You could buy dry erase board paint, and if you want to be able to use magnets on it, buy the magnetic primer. Prime then paint a wall, board, etc. and you can have any size dry erase board you wish. I've seen people use the chalkboard paint in a whole room for their kids, later on when the kids get older you can simply paint over it. I know the chalkboard paint I got was about $20 for a 1 pint can. I think the dry erase board paint is about the same price, can't remember exactly what the magnetic primer cost, but I think altogether it is about $50...totally worth it for a better more permanent solution.
I looked into dry erase paint. For the good stuff, it's still going to run you over $100 for a large space. I just got 3 1" x 4" boards to use as borders for $2.50 each. Just have to cut 1 down to size with a circular saw. If you don't have a circular saw, Lowes will cut it for you. But you don't have to do all the grooves or cut the 2x4 into pieces. You do probably need a power drill, but you should have that anyway.
I bought an 8' x 4' Thrifty White Panel Board (Not white panel board) and a box of 1" nails. Lowe's cut it into one 6' x 4' piece and two 2' x 2' pieces for free. I nailed them directly to the walls without borders. Less than 20 bucks for a huge board in the home office and two small boards in the kitchen. No tools required.
Thanks. No it is not. What you are talking about is a metal product. This is a moisture resistant hard-board material found near the paneling section of most home centers.
if this the hardboard stuff from lowes that other diyers are using dont bother. its junk. the coating comes off easily. use a smooth gloss frp panel instead. way better finish and indestructible.
I want to make the inside of my house completely with whitebord whitebored celling whitebored walls whitebored Flores I might even make my tables white bored
Late to the 'thanks' party. I was shopping for a simple freakin' whiteboard at WallyMarts and for the size I was looking at they wanted $90 pre-tax! I figured, hey, somebody has got to have a better way... Hell, I might retire and make Whiteboards for a living, geez. Thanks, for this ridiculously obvious DIY project.
Jay your design is awesome and it inspired us to make our own. If you DONT have all the tools Jay does you can still make a massive wall dry erase board for only $30 while still classing it up with molding. Check out our channel!
what's the name of this white sheet
Been a carpenter all my life and all i can say is, Excellent work and some really great tips! (Better than i coulda done but don't tell anybody)
Thanks, Jay. This video finally got me moving on my whiteboard project, which I've been telling my wife I'd build for our home business for over 2 years now! Loved the project, now I am thinking about building one for the grandkids and my shop.
which material did you use for the erase board?
Way cool Jay. I didn't realize the white board was that cheap. Thanks for the heads up. Got to make a couple of these.
I watched a few of these videos and this was the best one. I just used plain 1x4's for the edge and it turned out great. A board like this would cost hundreds, so this was pretty great!
Good stuff, man. I appreciated you speeding up the unglamorous parts, but still showing them. Nice camera work and editing, as well.
Yes

Nice job on the video! Loved the way you did it with all the effects.
Very cool approach. I am also looking for a cost-effective way to create a large whiteboard that doesn't look terrible like the store bought solutions.
You are heaven sent!! Thanks!! I need a couple of these!!
I have a much smaller version in my shop. Helps for remembering dimensions.
Very creative design. Is the white board that u used the same as whats used for kitchen/bathroom backsplashes. usually in rental properties.
AWESOME SAUCE!!! Thank you so much. I'm doing this for my kids playroom tomorrow!
Another great project! I bet I can't find whiteboard anywhere as cheap as that in Scotland though. You seem to get great prices for materials in the USA.

Do you have an pictures or video of such a slip-up for those of us who like gore and the others who stubbornly think: "It'll never happen to me!"?
you said white panel board. Whats the difference between that and melamine? Im fairly new to this and could really use tonnes of whiteboard space in my home office
Thank you.
Love it. My daughter would love it too!
That was awesome! Thank you. I need one of these in my home office.
Thanks Pete!
Is that board to flimsy to use as a standalone one rather then mounted to the wall? Like say I built a frame so it could stand on the floor instead, would I need to reinforce the board a lot after it is incased?
how do you make that template for cutting the white board? It looks like its made out of plywood.
Thanks!
Will white laminated mica work for whiteboard?
I've never tried it. But probably.
awesome!! was looking for a good size whiteboard, anything near this size was 150$ or more. Thanks!
Awesome! Thanks!
Thanks @jay bates, i got the panel cut up in 33" blocks at lowe's itself. Now will tape it up with electrical tape and nail it to the wall. Might, as well just stick it to the wall using 3M easy remove tapes.
+Abhishek Agrawal I was maintenance at an apartment complex. Those 3m easy remove tapes cause way more damage over time than a nail hole.
+Jay Bates HAHA very true. Unless you plan on removing the wall or repairing huge spots where those 3M tape strips are placed. That stuff does NOT come off like advertised.
Looks great Jay!

+Alvaro Garzon try nail polish remover in a spray bottle no water added and a magic erase
You go boy! Love this project Jay.
Awesome tutorial for all the people that have entire wood shops in their houses....haha.
Hrm. Still stuck but thanks for the ideas!
Sooooooo handy for the shop. I have a smaller one in mine. It remembers dimensions better than me....
I actually have a dry erase board in my future plans. This dimension is tooo big for me but we can cut it down a bit =P
Good work Jay!
Love this! I want to do this, but I was hoping to make it magnetic so that I can easily attach papers when using it. Have any idea or tips on how I can manage to do that?
Buy a bunch of magnets and stick it behind the board lol.
Excellent idea and video.
Jay, how is the whiteboard holding up?
You are completely AWESOME! Thank you so much for making this video. I need a large dry erase board like the one that you made but when I priced them in the stores and online they were between 350- 550 dollars! I cont afford that but I can ask my step father to make one of these for me. :D THANKS!
Can i ask you the name of the material that you use for the white panel?
Thanks
I just bought some today.
www.lowes.com/pd/FashionWall-47-75-in-x-7-98-ft-Smooth-White-Panelboard-Hardboard-Wall-Panel/3015239
White Panelboard doesn't work. You need THRIFTY WHITE PANEL BOARD.
Brian Howard the smooth white panelboard is well erasable?
Nope. Just test it in the store. Go to Lowe's with a dry erase marker and test it. Then test Thrifty white panel. See which one erases better. They are right next to each other in Lowe's hardware store.
To Bear thank you
What is the product number of the board at Lowes ??
Hello! I need a white erase board like a size 45x30,,,what's your price? And do you ship out?
How long does this board last? what kind of cleaning tools do you use? does it stain later after you used it for quite a while?
+Sim Singh I used it for a couple years before I had no more use for it. With good markers a wet rag is all you need to clean. With bad markers you might need a Magic Clean Eraser.
I could not find the dry erase board in 2 Lowes I looked at. Can you provide a link to it or tell me which Lowes you got it from (I'm also from the Detroit area)? Thanks!
Hi Jay. I was thinking, Your office needs a projector now. New project, projector case on the other wall. What do you think?
what's that white material?
What do you say at 3:25 that has a notch cut out in the back? Buy some _________?
zackdelarocha8 chair rail
David McGrath Ah... i don't see how it'd work with this. He's saying it already has the slit to slide the board into? I don't see the slit on the pictures online.
Nice work done ..................... Thank you.
What board is that you bought from lowe's. I didn't quite heard what you say. Maybe you should add transcript here. Very nice suggestion. I will add to my wall.
Where did you get the white panel board? There's no shop near me that sells them so I have to look online and I'm having trouble finding one.
+Kratna the name is a Melamine panel and you can find it at lowe's. www.lowes.com/ProductDisplay?langId=-1&storeId=10151&catalogId=10051&productId=3015239&cId=detail

Looks good, bud!
I think the best "whiteboards" are made of glass, you should try it, they are great!
Great project, I will be making one. I recently subscribed to your channel and I'm lovin' your vids.
Thanks
I have been thinking about something like this for the office. thanks for showing me it will work. Lets Go RED WINGS!!!
Really good thank you
I could use something like that in the shop! Nice job.
Awesome video. You rock man.
Thanx for the vid, and sharing.
fantastic, Jay!
Nice!
Excellent job--thanks for sharing! Go Wings!!
Quick question: What marker brand do you use? the brands that I have gotten have this wet look to it as if the marker is evaporating. Some are worse than others. The wet erase markers do it pretty bad and the office depot dry erase ones are the same. Any advice would be great
Michael Nguyen I have a dozen or so markers and most of them are different brands. I have no clue.
Home depot in Canada doesn't have it. Lowes did, but cost me $65. Still cheaper then buying actual white board costs $400 here.
good job Thanks for sharing.
I'm not clear on something. Does this board already come with a clear coating for dry eraser markers? Or did you buy the Dry Eraser paint and put a few coats on it before installing? Or this board works just as is straight from the store? Thanks
+Allan Ramos It comes with a clear coating.
+Jay Bates No coating needed, but for added durability, I apply a coat of green Turtle Wax and buff every now and then.
great idea
Does your workshop have a kitchen?
where i found the board?
because OfficeDeppot sell me a full Dry erase board, and is expensive.
thanks
+Daniel Ben Avraham
This is what I used to make mine. Found it in the paneling section at Home Depot.
EUCATILE 32 sq. ft. 96 in. x 48 in. Hardboard Thrifty White Tile Board

Yeah man. I still have a 2'x4' section of this left over. I'll probably make another to give to someone.
I'm not in the Detroit area, I grew up there. I'm in Mississippi. Can't add links in TH-cam comments
i got the same board from Lowes. the problem is it has a lacquer odor that i am not too sure how to het rid of before i hand it on the wall. it has been sitting in the garage for three weeks and still smell the same. Any ideas ?
No ideas. Mine didn't come like that. Sorry. Airing it out is all I would think to do.
That was an awesome video!
what is the white board you bought? I could not understand your words :'(
Very helpful, kudos Jay!
Yes! Go Wings!!
How well has this held up over the past few months?
It's in the same condition as day one. We've found that some brands of markers are easier to remove than others but just a spray of windex on a rag and it's back to being perfect.
Uh oh....A Colorado fan............ ;)
So if i don't have all these equipment, how much it should co$t me ?
Thought so. :)

AWESOME!
Awesome 👍
Is the board bouncy in the middle? because it has to foundations except the wall its sitting on....
I have the same question. Seems the notched bottom would pull the board a bit off the wall.
Thanks. No it is not. What you are talking about is a metal product. This is a moisture resistant hard-board material found near the paneling section of most home centers.
10 years later: Thank you, sir!
Great video as always Jay. Thanks
good job on the board... wings smings! :)
if this the hardboard stuff from lowes that other diyers are using dont bother. its junk. the coating comes off easily. use a smooth gloss frp panel instead. way better finish and indestructible.

Ty just left office depot and was like I am not paying 40.+ for a board.
Kudos on the video! Very nice. Thumbs down on the Wings...
Can you come to florida and build me one? Hubby doesn't have all them tools and he will forget to make it. SMH gotta love issues from Afghanistan.
