Pretty sure he does, it’s a pretty defining trait in the comics and it’s why a lot of people empathise with him. He’s a regular guy who struggles to balance a difficult life on minimum wage with being a good person.
I think that’s why people weren’t big fans of the first two movies, even though i thought they where great, because it wasn’t really Peter to them, while even if this movie sort of backtracks on some fo that stuff it DOES cement him as the Peter Parker everybody WANTED to see.

Not much of a religious sort, but in the first line to many of my darkest days, despite my indifference to either the theistic and the atheist, I prayed to God to end my suffering. Destroy me completely, erase my existence, I no longer want to live, nor continue on to the next life. And in return, I will give everything and anything, my love, my devotion, I will be zealous to the highest interpretation of that word.
      I received nothing.
Resenting God for ignoring my one and only wish, a simple task, a blink of that all-seeing eye would've been enough to remove me, especially with that mighty omnipotence. I turned the other way. I beseeched below, at Satan, directed to any and all the denizens of Hell, any demon who so desired, grant me this one wish, and I will give everything and anything, no matter the cost.
      I received... Nothing.
No angelic voices telling me to push on, to fully convert me. No dark whispering, beckoning malice to turn me to untold depravity and satanic worship. Nothing from either side. Not even false promises of the Devil, no trickery for me to believe my wish will become true, only to eschew all promises. Absolutely nothing.
No angel, nor demon. No God, no Devil.
Since then, I hold either side with utmost contempt. As surely, they look upon me with utter disgust. To ignore a stupid, pathetic, weak and vulnerable child. Easy pickings. Yet, nothing came.
I am the only mistake. I am the only thing wrong with the world. Everything is going accordingly to plan, a natural cycle, except me. An error. A failure. The thing that should not be born. Undeserving, and worthless.
I've fallen far too deep. There was a time where I could be saved, that moment has long past. I am a lost cause. Hopeless.
I am a coward, as well. No matter how intense the urge, how urgent the intent, I've yet to even make an attempt at my life.
I am rotting inside. I'm long past the definition of dead, I'm simply rotting.

if we put this in real terms like if peter was a cop and failed to protect his girlfriend from a brain injury caused by a gang he was trying to arrest: would we expect him to abandon her at the hospital and cut her out of his life forever because it would be too dangerous for her? or would the right thing be to express regret for his failing but make it up to her by being there for her?

The second theme of Spiderman, after responsibility, is learning your responsibility stops at others' autonomy. Repeatedly in canon, Peter does not honor others, deciding for them what they must want and are or are not capable of handling, and assuming he is not worthy, or they can't possibly love him enough, and needs to protect everyone from him by continuing to isolate himself. He learns responsibility, but never learns moderation.

So I went to Professor Warren and asked him if he would do outrageously unethical experiments on me for extra credit! Now I'm INSANE so DIE!"

and whats kind of ironic is, that mirrors the dispute between marvel and sony: they both know they have the power and money and ip's to make fantastic movies, if not fantastic cinema, but their borderline responsibility to do this high-budget, star-studded reboot of a successful, fan-favourite franchise justice with flashy effects, high-quality acting and "ooh wow" connections within the pre-existing mcu wasnt moderated by a genuine desire to create meaningful, real art that has an impact on its audience and a meaningful result in the context of the world that it was created as a part of. unfortunately, this isn't just more isolated stock-standard hollywood corporate greed. this led to the conclusion of one of the most influential and lucrative superhero trilogies in recent memory being worse than just cheap or disappointing or unnecessary - it led to the story of, if not for endgame, the most anticipated finale in all of marvel being a waste, of everything it has been so far and everyone who has worked so hard to make this trilogy what it was up to this point.

Unrelated to the point of this video but I just wanna vent about how Doctor Strange was characterized in this movie as an extremely fucking dense and irresponsible asshole, the kind of person who blames all their own mistakes and stupidity on those around them in order to appear smart. I would go so far as to say the wish and its consequences were like 90% directly his fault (he held the power of the wish, he executed the wish despite warnings, then proceeded to explain literally nothing about how it works to Peter before initiating it and then berating him for not knowing the exact mechanics of his magic.) How can he get angry at peter, an emotional teenager, for asking him to cast such a dangerous spell when he had ALL the power and understanding to say no. I was so pissed off about his characterization at that point that I said to my friend "they better have a moment where they turn this on his head and point out this is all his fault or im actually gonna be kind of mad." They have ONE line where MJ points it out and it gets quickly swept under the rug played for laughs. Bruh that man should have had a fucking soliloquy apologizing for his actions.

It's pretty clear they are replacing Hiddleston in the long run. IMDB said he won't appear in all the episodes of season 2 at the time I wrote my comment and that really tracks. The story goes well out of its way to artificially make Loki unlikable. The scene where he offers Sylvie a blanket and she calls it a tablecloth - and she's not wrong. No reason for that detail except to make Loki look stupid, and that's one of many.
Phase 4 is not written as well as the previous MCU installments. Dr Strange MoM and Thor 4 just back that up. They kick us in the face with messaging because they don't trust the audience and it really breaks the immersion. The latest Dune film? Completely immersed, hardly noticed how the time passed. I think a lot of people are missing your point, and while not everyone has to agree, personally your point about MJ's autonomy really hit home for me. It seems like a breach of trust and completely disregarding MJ's own choices about her life. And while you can argue whether or not it was in-character for Peter Parker, the point is how the film frames it. And with the music cues and the way it frames MJ's life after the fact, it seems that it paints it more as a heroic but melancholy moment, instead of like "this is kinda fucked up, right?" And like you said, if that was made only because of or in part because of the business dealings of Sony and Marvel, that would suck.
Also, I get that like everyone in the world is forgetting this stuff too, and there's philosophy there. But something like this would never happen irl, and I think the thing that Marvel films do really well (or sometimes not so well), is use the larger-than-life situations to tell stories about more down to earth ideas, like the relationships between the characters. So something this big happening to the main characters, to me, is clearly supposed to be viewed through that lens, and not like "but what if the whole universe really WAS going to rip apart and Dr. Strange magic was real?" Like the point of Thanos wasn't talking about what if a guy actually could use infinity stones, it was about his character motivations and what it meant for each of the heroes in the series to fail completely, and try to come back from that. Anyway, my two cents.

    • @ainsleymatthews8099
      @ainsleymatthews8099 2 ปีที่แล้ว +88

explained so well, i think in a larger sense that's what all great stories do, they use larger than life situations to comment on down to earth experiences. i love this about movies, the fact that we as people are able to all share and relate to an experience, simply by following along in a story. Not to sound too pretentious lmao, but it's kinda what makes art itself amazing too, the ability to connect with others through recounting shared experiences, life is beautiful and shit man

I wanted to write a hundred thousand words about Far From Home because the story intrigued me so much and it took my mind to fascinating places. I don't want to write anything about No Way Home. I feel that, now that the multiverse is a thing that will be explored by the Avengers heroes in future Marvel media, we'll start to feel more like this with each movie until the big Infinite War-like culmination film hits, or at least until they develop this overarching plot more. No Way Home: a fan-service-filled movie that ends with everyone's mind wiped of Spider-Man so he can start over; little was gained and little was lost (in terms of characterization - he's largely unchanged from the beginning of the movie as a character). Strange 2 - almost everything happened in other universes so nothing really mattered; a character believed to have died has now died again (or did she??) and characters remain largely unchanged from its beginning to its end.

It's not like he just chose not to start dating someone who was visibly interested in him; like you said, they were dating and she really changed over the course of their relationship, she very clearly was okay with it being dangerous and specifically asked for him to make her remember again but nope one band-aid she already said was fine was enough to make him bail

I do agree with what you are saying to an extent. Like you said when I first saw the movie, I thought the same that superheroes just choose not to have relationships to keep the people they care about safe. But after watching this video, I get that he took away her choice because before the spell took effect he told her exactly what would happen and she made the choice to tell him to help her remember afterwards, which he chose to go against.
However, I do have a small argument in defense of the movie's decision. Peter is allowed to be wrong. He's a human character and after just losing his aunt his response is to go against MJ's wishes so that she is safe. His reasoning his justifiable in his head, but we, the audience, should still see his decision as wrong. That sort of mistake leaves room for development and change and maybe he will come to realize that was a mistake and MJ's wishes should be honored. I just hope the next movie addresses this issue and maybe Peter will seek her out again, at least trying to build a new relationship with her if her remembering the old stuff is impossible.
Is it sexist? Yeah, kinda. But most well-written characters are flawed people that learn from their experiences and become better in the end. I just hope the next movie doesn't try to tell the audience that his decision was correct because that would be even more sexist.

I mean, I agree that what they did to Michelle Jones was hella sexist, and ghoulish, and basically everything you said. I also agree with the whole 'this movie is a business deal brought to life' jam. That said, I do think that there was a narrative thread through it, namely: No matter how bad or evil your enemy is, they are still human beings. They're people who NEED help. First and foremost, they need to be stopped from hurting others, yes, but they are also part of the responsibility we have.
With great power comes great responsibility. A responsibility to everyone.
It mostly glimmers through when May is telling Peter he can't just shove a mentally unwell Norman Osborne to his own universe to die. The end result, the victory, is not that the villain dies (as is what happened to all of the villains present in the older movies), it's that he's given the help he needs. Which, imho was an interesting choice.
You can of course argue that Peter already knew this in the first movie, and even the second because he never meant for Jake Gyllenhaal to die, but this is the point driven to its most extreme: Are you still going to be merciful when the other person has taken away one of the people you love the most in the world? And now Peter understands that even if someone does something atrocious, they're still his responsibility to help.
Just too bad that he learned dogshit about how to treat his girlfriend.

I agree with this point and it was my initial takeaway too when I thought about the narrative immediately after viewing. It did feel shallow because it seems like it was only contained in this movie on its own rather than this slower multi-movie buildup that we see in many of the other threads mentioned in the video. It's almost as if they wanted to do more but the "deal plot" got in the way.
Also does anyone else get the impression that this stripping of MJ's agency is almost like a fan service power fantasy in and of itself? E.G. who needs webs n' shit when you can dictate a "submissive" partners entire reality? Can this what Dr. Strange's character is building towards in the upcoming movie? But that is a slippery slope so I'll just stop there I guess.

I don't know that the stripping MJ of her agency was a power fantasy trip, I'm not even entirely sure the movie was trying to sell it as a 'good thing Peter did' instead of a colossal mistake.
However, it's funny that you mention Doctor Strange, because the second time I watched the movie it struck me that none of the villains are the movie's antagonist. They're victims, bystanders spiderman needs to save. Instead, Doctor Strange very much fulfills the role of antagonist.
He's the one who is almost constantly ruining things for Peter and getting pitted against him. It's not like it was in Homecoming, where Tony Stark was the mentor guy who was always right. Instead, Doctor Strange is the one who tells Peter what to do to fix a problem Strange made (dude's the one with the spell knowledge. He should've known not to cast it willy nilly without preparation.) He's the one who tells Peter not to help the villains, who fights Peter over their fates and who ultimately does more bad than good in the end. The universe is objectively worse off without May, and without MJ being open to people.
I would bet that it's a clear sign towards how Strange's hubris can lead him to become a worse person. As it stands, it seems that some version of Strange will be a legit villain in Multiverse of Madness, so this kind of behaviour is quite on point for him.
As a final point, Strange's presence and his behaviour in this movie very much falls in line with Peter trusting someone other than himself to fix the problem instead of believing in himself. The endresult is that he needs other versions of himself (who have already failed in the past) to trust and guide him to get it right.

Whole thing would be a nice narrative arc in at least one way even if they had to ruin the MJ thing for $.

And what irked me about the whole thing, was that by not doing so he, completely overrode her autonomy. Most people weren't conscious of the choice to have their memory altered, but she was, and by not following up on his promise. He stole from her the ability to chose for herself. She had her most precious memories and relationship stolen from her under the condition it would be returned. That condition was her consent, and without it her consent was violated.

This is a severely disturbing way of describing the situation, and inaccurate to the actual events of the movie. MJ would have consented to losing her memory regardless, as otherwise everyone, including herself, would have died in the massive rip between realities. That was her way of feeling better about it, as well as reassuring Peter, but ultimately she would have gone with it either way. This isn’t some creepy screwed up brainwashing narrative, this was something that HAD to happen, and MJ was aware of that. Peter fully intended to follow up on his promise until he saw that she was living a much happier life without him. I still completely understand feeling that he should have kept his promise, but the only reason he didn’t speak to her was because he felt he shouldn’t interfere with her new chance at a happier life. He actually thought of speaking to her as defining her life for her, as she would feel obligated to him again and would again risk messing up her own life. Although it can be argued that his actions disregarded her autonomy, that was clearly not what he intended, and although upon finding out that he didn’t tell her she would probably be angry, I doubt she would feel violated or controlled in the way you imply. Considering that the memory wipe affected the entire world and existed to prevent the destruction of spacetime and presumably the death of every character in the MCU, and therefore MJ would have agreed to it regardless of whether he promised to meet with her again, calling it a “violation of consent” is inaccurate and a very inflammatory and potentially needlessly triggering use of language.

I'd actually put forth the argument that a lot of Peter's constant apology is out of projection and fear. He is reassured by MJ that this is where she wants to be, but he is terrified of those he cares about suffering the consequences of associating with him. *He's* afraid of them getting hurt or killed, *he's* afraid of losing them. This comes to a head in the movie with Osbourne's murder of May, and the theme of trauma, particularly from loss, and how one copes with it, holds a large presence in the film.
Osbourne as The Goblin is a wonderful villain in how he targets his foils, a psychological torture and manipulation by threatening emotional ties; and with these bonds of friendship and family being so solid and positive in the text, with how many people Peter keeps in his circle, Osbourne has many fruit to pick and so will any other Villains that may come along.
And thus the ending. Peter, with his newfound anonymity protects not MJ but himself from a dangerous or uncomfortable arrangement. Peter, as a coping mechanism, has closed himself off from such intimate relationships.

Definitely some good points… BUT to be fair, I think Tom’s Peter is thinking about what he learned from Andrew’s Peter in that scene. Andrew’s Peter tells him that he lost his mj and then right after that Peter almost lost mj in that fall. Andrew was able to save her when Peter couldn’t. I think this cemented the idea of those consequences for him and confirmed that he can’t always save her.

When you said, "Who's gonna act on your passions if not you?" I literally took a pause. That's MUCH more impactful for me than the similar quote, "Be the change you want to see in the world." So for the longest time I've been passionate about the queer community. I've been researching our history and learning about different identities and such since I was in elementary school. More recently, I did a paper on mental health and queer youth. I learned a lot about the negative things that affect us and how support, such as from a GSA club or parent, can help tremendously. My school doesn't have a GSA and I felt this building feeling of "Our school should have this; it's important." I had heard other people talk about starting a GSA club but no one had actually tried. So, despite being terrified of pushback, I did. Because like you said, who's gonna act on my passion (and do it well) but me? It feels like a lot of responsibility to have to be the one to Change The World™ but if you reframe it as "acting on a passion" it's easier to accept that you CAN do it and that your goal is obtainable.

"Everyone wants what marvel has, but refuse to do what marvel did. Make a few humble solo movies, work off that, then do a team up movie as a payoff. It's that simple."
Meanwhile Sonic the Hedgehog is about to be the ONE film franchise that MIGHT be actually able to make their own cinematic universe LIKE MARVEL BUT NOT EXACTLY LIKE MARVEL. Why?
They have someone at the helm WHO CARES. ABOUT. THE CHARACTERS, NOT THE MONEYS. Jeff Fowler is a godsend to Sonic. The first is a humble buddy story that is find the mcguffin; get the rings. Explore who movie Sonic is as a character. Simple easy to follow GSU: Goals, stakes, urgency. Goal: get the rings. Stakes: Sonic and Tom are being chased by the government and Eggman, Sonic's life is on the line. Urgency: find the rings before Eggman finds Sonic. Got it.
SECOND movie expands on that-brings in Tails and Knuckles. Tails IDOLIZES Sonic, wants to be like him. Knuckles wants Sonic to become past tense. At first. Sonic has to realize being a hero isn't just for you, you now have the responsibility to use your powers to ensure the people you love don't get hurt. He only realizes this after Tails gets severely hurt. When he and Knuckles have a heart to heart on the beach. HE comes to that conclusion on his own, not one person shoves it down his throat-Tom plants the idea, he sees it himself later. This is expanding Sonic's character to no longer just be the cocky SOB meta Sonic is, but the kind, heroic, selfless hedgehog we all know him to be. What are the goals, stakes and urgency here? Goal: race to the compass to find the emerald. Stakes: get the master emerald before the other team. Urgency: get the emerald before eggman gets it and destroys the world. Got it.
THEN they introduce SHADOW the god damn hedgehog for movie 3, paving the way for Amy Rose, Rouge the Bat, but not all in ONE movie they know that would be over crowded. So, they do this one character at a time, at most two at a time. So for movie 3, Amy and Shadow. I can see them further expanding Sonic's characterization to question his morality, question how far he'll go to stop someone, to save the people he loves cause SHADOW IS A THREAT. Once he takes off his inhibitor rings it's over 9000 level baby. They're already making a Knuckles spin off series, so perhaps Rouge will be introduced there. Sonic is a character who LITERALLY doesn't have a single fck to give when it comes to others' opinions on him. It's not out of being cocky or mean like the 2010 era Sonic, but it's out of NECESSITY. He HAS to be the villain sometimes, to be the hero. It's best said in Black Knight: when faced with the prospect of killing King Arthur would make him the villain in the eyes of the people Sonic LITERALLY responds "guess I can't be the hero all the time." THAT is taking responsibility for your actions, understanding your power, your choices. THAT is who Sonic is; freedom, the wind, ever changing, never bowing to anyone. Movie Sonic does care about what others think of him, but I can definitely see him coming into his own as well, especially against a threat like Shadow.
The important thing to note, is they're saving the big Shadow sht fight for movie 3, NOT SHOVING IT INTO MOVIE 2 BECAUSE WHY ON EARTH WOULD YOU? There's no build up, no characterization explored, no world building expanded if you fast travel to the fight. You can't just have heroes fighting on screen because that one other movie did it. There needs to be reason WHY. Reasons that make sense. Through things that were built up well. Sonic the Hedgehog 2020 sets up the universe and characters and stakes and villain. Sonic the Hedgehog 2022 expands the universe and brings in new players while further developing the hero. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will have to continue expanding the universe and develop not just Sonic, but Tails, Knuckles, Shadow, and potentially Amy. It's A LOT but it's a WORTH WHILE earned thing because the first two movies have already done the hard parts-set everything up. By introducing Shadow, we're now into the deep cut of Sonic lore.
The writers don't HAVE to have time set aside for character and plot to be explained in exposition, aside from Shadow's backstory. That's it. They have the games to go off of, and they have been doing just that, while making the movies their own thing, much like how Marvel is. And it's smart. It allows the characters to breathe and feel like CHARACTERS with actual stakes. Not just things happening on the screen for 2 hours. A movie without stakes is just white noise, a movie that's just white noise has no meaningful plot, if a movie has no meaningful plot why care about the characters. It's writing 101.
HOW IS IT THAT SONIC IS GETTING THINGS RIGHT OUT THE GATE AND DC IS STILL SCREWING THINGS UP INTO 2022?! It's EMBARRASSING.

I would HOPE so much.... that the ramifications of erasing an entire person from your history is explored in the next set of movies with Ned. Ned and Peter have been best friends assuming past homecoming and civil war(maybe), and their lives have been molded by being there for each other growing up.
Ned could have a shittier life going forward from feeling a piece of himself missing, and also MISSING that piece of yourself that you can’t even identify and that influences his future from peters decision. You don’t even have to deal with this in the SM4 just follow it over the next set of films until Ned goes crazy or something.
this would show me and establish to the universe that when Doctor Strange describes the memory spell as “standard” that that means it’s meant for stupid minuscule shit like forgetting an embarrassing kamar taj party, but not erasing people from another persons life history as that feels like it COULD and SHOULD wreck a person mentally and emotionally.
my other unrelated hope is that the next film deals with a Peter Parker struggling to rebuild his life culminating in a lesson of “the world needs Peter Parker too, not just Spider-Man” as Peter will teeter towards just being Spider-Man only and full time but recognizes balance between his two lives and how it’s important to have an impact as the person you are and not hide from the world in fear you’ll ruin things just by being there.
