Matej is such an exciting racer and nice guy. True champion and the people's champion. Great for the team and teammates to come and support. Learn from this effort.
Not a BHV fan, but i freaking adore Matej. Good for him to go out of his comfort zone, and show the jersey. He’s normally super prepared. I hope he works on it, and tries again next year.
You should have included the part where Mahoric was standing on the side of the course, after his final flat tire, and says, "We're going to stick with road racing".
Gravel can be a lot of different experiences. This version is more on mtb side, so it's really tough, it's easier to be grounded by mechanical problems. It takes preparation, respect and some luck too.
I think the main problem is that you can't hope to fly in, do 24 hours of prep and expect to do well. Planning for mechanical failures is part of this race. People spend *months* planning their strategy for dealing with it. It's a big equalizer at the moment. The big European teams aren't interested enough to invest that much effort into winning this race, so I think it will stay out of their grasp for a while.
Exactly. I live in Emporia so we get to see it. Elite racers are here two, three and even four weeks in advance. They have reconned every inch of the course. They have tested tires, widths and pressures. They are trying to predict the weather on race day to see what changes they might make. For these racers fixing a flat should take a minute or two.
We have had a much tougher one here in the US that makes this one a walk in the park, the Nationals we did last year in the Ozarks Triathlon version, with gravel climbs, runs, and lake swim. The bike section alone is extremely difficult with almost no flats at all. The terrain requires both climbing & sprinting capabilities.
Love Matej Mohoric, and though he would win the race, it looks like Bahrain Victorious weren't prepared to deal with the tough American gravel. Props to the EF Easypost guy who won for making it look easy lol.
This type of epic event takes more than a few attempts before you can hope to win it . Even a guy like Pog or WVA would find it challenging first time out.
Lol, he’s still a road cyclist. You have to prepare for this specifically. He wasn’t taking this seriously compared to amateurs who train on gravel every day. His goals are Tdf and OLY not Unbound. He just wanted to try something new, for fun 😊

A lot of comments about them not being prepared. I get that, and I agree a fair extent, but I wonder at what point luck tips the scales of preparation. You can spend weeks there ahead of time "getting to know every inch of the course" and still have a mechanical or flat one mile into the race.
I think it really shows how pathetic the UCI's Gravel Worlds is compared to LTGP, particularly Unbound, and I love to see it. Hope UCI actually make Gravel Worlds more than just a dirty road race.
World Tour Teams will dominate men US gravel in a matter of time! take a look at the woman's division. it's also safe to say US road racing/racers are pathetic no?
Expecting to do well in a race that people spend their entire year figuring out the bike setup for, with 24 hours of prep time is insane. I knew it wasn’t going to end well when it started with “show me how to fix a puncture” Honestly would’ve expected a bit more respect to be shown to the race from the world champion and his team.
So for such a long race that has only one or two check points and that a puncture can determine the outcome how come a system like Tannus Armour isn't used by most riders? Sure there's a minor weight penalty but eliminating punctures seems to be the best measure of ensuring a podium spot
Indeed, they are more soft gravel. If the gravel is more tougher than than what you are used to, then it's not nice. Wtf. Or you are full gravel, no matter the terrain, or you are not. Stop.
Way to self centered production. Who else was in the starting grid line, who won it in the previous years, are they back, who were the top 3 what about the woman. Did any of their team even finish the race? Looks like a group of rich pros who had no chance to star so they gave up. That's not what the race is about. It's about finish9ing the race with all the problems that come your way. Any one can start but only real warriors finish.
I dont follow road racing so i dont know anything about your team. Being self sufficient is one of the challenges of this race and not finishing makes you look like a bad sport and unprofessional.

So awesome that Matej shows up to Unbound in the rainbow bands. Way to represent the jersey!
That is what we call a "Spirit of Gravel"
Loved having Matej 🌈 and teammates join in the fun this year - hope to see him back for another go soon!!

flip, he's a likable guy.

I kinda consider EF also a big european team
even tho it's technically American
@@shema02Lachlan’s contract with EF allows him to focus on this year round, so it’s not the same as BHV flying over in the middle of road season.

These guys are racing grand tours and taking the time to come to elevate this race to the next level. Maybe keep that in perspective..
Gonna get hot, gonna get a flat, gonna quit
Love seeing Matej in the pink pig bedroom. Solid dude, no ego!

The choice of tyres is critical. Wider heavier more puncture resistant will pay off.

That EF guy is not racing in WT, so basically he’s focusing on gravel racing

They should allow even just motorcycle SAGs in Unbound. How do we know if the winner is really the best or he is just lucky.
