I saw Plant and Page in concert 25 years ago. It will always be the best show I ever see. Jimmy noticed someone using a violin bow in the studio to get some freaky sounds on a track. He got a violin bow (I think cellos and violas all use the same bows.) and became fluent in it's playing with the theremin on the side sometimes as well.
I was lucky enough to see the same tour in Australia and yeah, remains to this day an unbeatable musical experience

This is a great performance, but IMO the Madison Square Garden performance from 1973 was by far their best. It's magical, and you should absolutely not miss that one.

Yes yes we know, it's what you all say. Royal Albert Hall is also a fantastic concert, with a lot more raw energy if you ask me. A concert not many react to because all you can recommend apparently is MSG

Most reactors, if they get to a point that they'll listen to a live version of Dazed and Confused, will only listen to the one version, and probably never listen to another live version in their lives. So I would rather they watch the MSG version, where they are more refined, and more magical. Since I'm a Zep fanatic, I love all versions. But IMO, it's better that they are introduced to the MSG version first.
This was a masterclass in live performances. Can't get more 'Live' than this performance at the time.
It was a mesmerizing artistic performance in which the time element was completely controlled by Page and the band, toying with the audience and teasing us at their leisure like we are a fish hooked firmly on a line.
Well, I already commented on the studio version that Dazed is a showpiece from the first album that became their showpiece live and gave them the opportunity to really experiment and improvise. Royal Albert Hall was just a little bit more than a year after the original was recorded but by the time you get to Madison Square Garden and ‘73 the evolution and experimentation is through the roof! You’ll notice that when they were younger, you can say they were heavier. As they evolved they became even more creative, maybe not quite the heaviness and power of their early days but nonetheless brilliant in there creativity! Looking forward to the 1973 show that I was fortunate to be at when I was 15 years old. 😊

Seen Jimmy Page twice in my life. Both times his playing was not of this world. In my 70 years have never seen anybody like him. You are correct they rarely play a song like they did it in the studio.
4 times ( 1971 to 1979 ) and close up front of stage twice in that list). Two hours, three hours, awesome from first to last minute.
Sadly never saw Zeppelin, had Tickets for the Boston 1973 that got cancelled the day after tickets went on sale after a rampage at the old Boston Garden while everyone waited for tickets. That sucked, big time, we had 8 tickets, we about cried. Saw him 9 times after solo, with the firm and 3 glorious times with Robert Plant. Along with David Gilmour and Tony Iommi, best guitar players I ever saw live.

Being a vocalist, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist myself, Led Zeppelin has always been one of my favorite rock bands. I heard Elie say he wondered how Jimmy Page came up with the idea for the violin bow on the guitar. Well, I can help you with that one. When he was a studio session musician, one of the classical violin musicians asked him how come he doesn't try using a violin bow on the guitar. Jimmy said that he never thought of that idea before. So, he said that he thought to keep it in mine to use it at some point. You two surely are one great! looking couple. You got the handsome Elie on one side, and then you have the super beautiful, extremely hot Carol on the other side. Anyway, you guys always have great reactions to the songs that you do. I've watch about 4 of your videos so far and you two are very enjoyable to watch. And Carol does and says some really funny things sometimes. Great job from the both of you.

Great reaction guys!!! Love watching you discover song versions that I grew up with. Yes, the studio versions give you a base with which to reference the live versions... they never played a song twice the same! An amazing quartet of musicians we were blessed to have growing up.

At 8:17, when Plant replies to some of Jimmy’s bow work on the guitar with “be on my side, I’ll be on yours” he is sampling a bit of Neil Young’s “Down By the River” that they had apparently just recently seen in concert.

The first to use a violin bow was Eddie Phillips, the guitarist of "Creation".
The cello bow was common knowledge as acoustic string instruments were very popular in rock music back then

The reason the audio and video was best at MSG 73 is because they filmed the concert for the movie called “The Song Remains the Same” released in 1976. All footage was filmed and recorded at MSG 1973, Led Zeppelin at the absolute pinnacle of their live shows.
And to think I grew up with this now, I’m in my 60s, but it was just like yesterday
Apparently at the end of 1968/ 1969 they went on their first American Tour and by the time it finished they were stars, I'm not surprised with tracks like Communication Breakdown, You Shook Me, How Many More Times, Dazed and Confused and Babe I'm Gonna Leave You etc, I'm sure America had never heard anything like them.
Jimmy had been around recording studios for quite a while, (Playing on many other artists recordings). He was probably given a chance to be as innovative as the 60s would let him especially during the psychedelic late 60s. This playing with the bow was possibly the direct alternative to violinists and cellists playing pizzicato (plucking the strings). Great live show. Cheers ✌
Since you guys are doing both the live and studio versions, I noticed you haven't yet done the studio version of Kashmir. To my ear, it is way more powerful and mysterious than the live version. Would love to see you two react to it. Just one thing, I don't usually suggest to people to get the lyrics out in front of them, but in this case I think the lyrics really embellish the song and are worth the read. You might in the end, like me and many others, consider this their greatest song.
I can see you're enjoying the live, extended versions of Zeppelin - and you love the drums - look up the live version of Moby Dick, featuring the acclaimed Bonzo solo. You definitely won't regret it!

Was going to see led zeppelin in 1980 to play in Detroit Michigan I was 17 seventeen years old when the greatest drummer past away it was tragic never got to see them in person

Love the Led Zep. In this same concert they covered two short songs by Eddie Cochran that are excellent, C'mon Everybody and Something Else which they play back to back.

You can really watch the evolution of this song, doing it this way. Studio, Albert hall then MSG. By 1973 they had perfected it. You will see.
Insane is right, they did this show not long after Led Zeppelin 2 and really were still bringing the hammer down before heading into the studio and exploring other sound textures on their third album. For me, any gig in 70/72 is them at their hard rocking best, before new albums eventually bumped much of this set list. They have great eras of music no matter when in their great career but it is so cool to see them shocking the world and establishing their legend. Also from this show, try What Is and What Can Never Be, another all time banger. Every song is a banger band, enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎸🎹🎶
Led Zeppelin is insane yes. He's the only rock guitarist to use a bow. I believe this was suggested to Jimmy Page by someone. To have the effect of Dazed and Confused a bow is used in the music. He uses the bow in other songs as well. The stage version of this song is much different and longer than the studio version of the same song. Both are equally excellent. Both of you provide an excellent review🎻🎸

I never get tired of seeing John Paul Jones trading stank faces with Bonham as he dances with his bass in this one. You guys should check out "The Rover." No live version, but it's got the kind of funky groove Carol digs, and is just a superb tune. The video (1973) of "The Ocean" is also funky af. You likely won't find the full 1973 live VID of D&C on YT. It's been scrubbed, unless you get it from the movie "The song remains the same," which YT does have.

When they played at Fillmore West in San Francisco of '69 They blew then iconic band Iron Butterfly. They refused to play after Led Zeppelin

Watch and react to Foo Fighters at Wembley 2008, because they had Jimi Page and John Paul Jones up on stage to plat 2 Zeppelin songs. It is AWESOME. So is the entire rest of Foo Fighters Wembley performance ( review Everlong, or any of their other songs).
Just think about the era of the music and culture. Most of the youth of that age were experimenting with drugs and then combine this with Led Zeppelin’s music OMG😂😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮
Once you see this at a live concert you are ruined for other music for life. Saw them in Brisbane in 72 and the guitar solo/drum faceoff went for over 20 minutes. However, you can]t see them live anymore so these types of live videos are the closest you can get. When we have a party we put a bunch of these on the big screen and people just go wild. It is like the ones that have never seen it live suddenly find their tribe.
According to Jimmy Page himself, he was an acquaintance of orchestra violinist David McCallum, father of actor David McCallum, who played "Ducky" on NCIS. The senior McCallum asked Jimmy if he'd ever thought about playing the electric guitar with a cello bow. Jimmy said they were always looking for creative things to do in concert to change it up a bit, so the bow became a regular feature of his performances.

Hey guys! So how about first track, first album, the one that started it all. Good Times Bad Times, recorded when Robert and John Bonham were barely 20 years old! This was the first introduction to Zeppelin for many back in the day… never played live in its entirety… Play it loud!

Around 13 minutes in on this reaction video, and you can hear the origins of "Candy Store Rock" forming. They often used the long improv's in this one to find new tracks that would be developed later. "Achilles Last Stand" and "Trampled Under Foot" also came out of this, among others. They were touring so relentlessly that the stage became their writing studio for creating new tracks, in a way.
Also, Jimmy is/was a kabbalist mystic, and he would actually use the string bow like a wand or athame, striding around on stage and doing versions of Calling Quarters or the LBRP, using the music and audience energy to add power to the patterns. That's something I have pointed out to various "occultic" or wiccan practitioners who think that their ritual stuff is so very very mysterious, telling them, "Well, Jimmy Page did it for millions of audience in a movie at Madison Square Garden, so maybe you aren't so secret special sauce after all..."

A cello is played with a bow in the same way as a violin, voila or double bass.
Of course they can also be plucked (pizzicato).

Elie, since you love drumming so much……Bonham is one of the top rock drummers, if not THE top, of the classic era. One song you should definitely check out is Trampled Underfoot, first studio and then live at Earl’s Court. The drumming on the live version is astounding. Ditto Achilles Last Stand live Knebworth.
BUT, I would also say, since you love drumming, you MUST watch Danny Carey live drum cam performance of Pneuma by Tool.
Start making a study of the top drummers. Top 20. It will fascinate you to watch Mike Portnoy, Neil Peart, Anton Fig, Jukka of Nightwish, Carrey, Dave Grohl, Taylor Hawkins, Jeff Pecaro, Stewart Copeland, Vinnie Colaiuta, Phil Collins and many more. All fascinating to watch, all outstanding for their own styles. You have allot of happy moments coming up! 😁👍
My favorite drummer is who I am listening to at that moment. To me, there is no greatest drummer, greatest guitarist, etc. But you're absolutely correct, there are a plethora of greats and Elie and Carol haven't even scratched the surface.

As you said, there are indeed a plethora of outstanding players of all instruments, and great singers. I would be ok with saying something like, these are the top 30 or so…..no ranking within that group.
@@MidwesternCornbilly some drummers are just the best drummer for their particular band but wouldn’t fit a different band. The drummers and musicians I super respect are the studio guys who could walk into the studio, not knowing what they’d be asked to do , and laying down great tracks in one or two takes in different styles snd genres. Guys like Pecaro and Gadd….Simon Phillips.

Zep is great 😃👍 this song started and kept evolving into one of the best zep songs ever.the best is the Madison square footage. Watch the movie the song reminds the same.

And this, kids, are how your grandparents got down when they were younger. Don't let them fool you. If any of them were in England in 1970, they need further interrogation!! Think how many bands were absolutely crushing it during this time. Grandma felt the same way as Carol does some 54 years later while watching Robert. Can't blame either of you.
