  • Paper Mario's always a talking point for this channel, but an amazing development's taken place amongst indie developers who also love the original Paper Mario games! From Bug Fables: The Everlasting Sapling to Scrap Story - The Paper Prelude, to Born of Bread to Java Saga, to Tale Feathers to Seahorse Saga, to The Outbound Ghost to Paper Sky: we now have an assortment of numerous indie games directly inspired from classic Paper Mario and it's really something special worth talking about.

    I find it really interesting how a lot of Nintendo games spawn a lot of inspired indie games, you have Earthbound that gave us Undertale, Yume Nikki, Lisa, Off, Omori… YIIK; Metroid gave us Hollow Knight, Guacamelee, Ori, Shantae, etc.. And the same thing here with Paper Mario.
    Nintendo really does inspire huh

      And yet... they don't seem interested in making a good paper mario game that is true to its roots: Action Command Style turn based battles with badges, partners and orignal characters... At least the fans are here to satisfy are thirst for paper mario like games like outbound ghost, born of bread, seahorse saga, bug fable, edingir odyssey, and so many others : p

    Happy to hear of our little community getting more attention. I'm one of the developers behind the project Papersky, and it's been great to work with other people in the community. I'm still blown away by how much people have been able to accomplish over the past few years.
    I think you put it best by how varied so many of our games are. The aesthetic itself is one about creativity, putting together something new out of the same building blocks. It's not just about "being another TTYD", we've all taken our own inspirations going into this, and hopefully it shows.

      Will you make a game like Paper Mario Sticker Star? Like expanding on the game mechanics and such? I know it’ll be difficult to do but it’s possible with the right planning and designing.

  • @MrLegendofLP
    @MrLegendofLP 2 ปีที่แล้ว +19

    I’ll genuinely never understand how anyone can say that the Paper Mario 64 and TTYD battle system would get stale. It’s a tight, extremely precise battle system that rewards experienced players both offensively and defensively whole also providing a difficulty curve for new players outside of the typical “thousands of health” that most JRPGs tend to resort to. By making the numbers so small in comparison to most RPGs, it leads to a much easier to understand but difficult to master system where your approach to battles isn’t just “max damage every turn.” And the badge system. My god the badge system. The customization possible with badges allows for so much creativity that even the hardest battles likely have at least 3 separate strategies that are equally viable. And Bug Fables proves that even adding new mechanics to that formula only enhances the gameplay experience. Learning how and when to relay a turn to increase damage output by that 1 HP that takes out the enemy in one turn feels *so good* to pull off. I’m so glad the Paperverse is blowing up and bringing this game style back into the mainstream.

    Now, I'm not a Paper Mario fan by any means, never played any of the games, but I think it's weird how Nintendo just doesn't want to bring back the old battle system. Like, it seems that Origami King was actually received fairly well overall, but despite the general positivity, I saw a good amount of criticism towards the ring-based battle system specifically. Now, it seems that there were a lot of people that were fine with the battles, but that was easily the biggest complaint I saw aimed at TOK, and I can see why.
    Not sure why Nintendo felt the need to change the battle system every single game. Like, just keep the gameplay consistent and expand upon it, don't revamp it entirely. If lots of people already seemed to enjoy TOK with the current battle system, imagine how much _more_ better is would have been received if it kept the old one.

      Thats exactly how I felt playing origami king. "Man this would be a serious contender in paper mario universe if it just had a good battle/badge/level up system" - never gonna pick it up again sadly as the battles were so slow and disengaging. 😊

    It's hard to buy the arguement of "the gameplay style will get stale if they go back to it" when Bug Fables is currently my favorite "Paper Mario" game and the style if modern Paper Mario got stale to me before even finishing Sticker Star.

    • @dustymcwari4468

      I would like them to do something else other than just further upgrading the realism of the crafty paper aesthetic and office supplies for the fourth time
      Classic PM had different directions that make them stand out on their own: 64 looked very playful with the pop out book look and use of toys and watercolor backgrounds, TTYD was a paper puppet show with theatre and all, and Super was very heavy on digital computer aesthetic and geometric shapes, while modern PM has remained in arts n crafts since Sticker Star, with stuff like paint, origami, or paper mache, rather than being the games’ new directions, they’re just used to further push the same arts n’ crafts look, and they’re becoming like the NSMB games, just upgrading and keeping the exact same look time and time again, and that’s really getting old xs
      And tbh, the crafty look of modern Paper Mario only looks nice, but by no means it’s special because there’s already another Nintendo IP that has been doing it from much longer than PM itself, and that’s Yoshi

    There's actually two different ways the "fine, I'll do it myself" approach can go, and the fact that many of these titles are going to be on Switch means that Nintendo is _absolutely_ aware of it. There's the good timeline, "oh, maybe Paper Mario 7 actually should go back to the old formula since clearly there's a market for it"... but there's also the timeline where they're like "oh cool, they're doing it for us *so we don't have to* now".

    I'm someone who adores the first two Paper Mario games, they're apart of my childhood. I also hate Sticker Star and Color Splash, but I love the Origami King. It's a game that I find good in it's own way.
    I dunno if I should say why, don't want to give you a full essay to read through. XD I look at Paper Mario in a more apathetic state, I got the classic games and can still enjoy them for years to come, but I think it's time for me to move on rather than hope that eventually they'll listen and give us the proper game we want. At best, I'm hoping for Nintendo to re-release the classic Paper Mario series, remaster them (though I don't think any of them need that much work to look good in the modern era, I still think the first game looks great today) under a Paper Mario All-Star Classic Collection release. But it'll be sixty dollars, the games will be basic ports like the Mario collection with the soundtracks being the only bonus and it'll be pulled March 31st because why not?
    In all seriousness, I would like a collection of the first three on a single cartridge and getting to play them on Switch without the dumb online service would be nice. This is a nice thing to see, shows the spirit of classic Paper Mario won't die.

    Having worked on Project M and dabbling in PR, I have a bit of experience with dealing with a certain subset of Nintendo fans.
    From my experience, I've had people claiming that they hated Super Smash Bros. Melee (as they wrongly assumed Project M was a carbon copy of it), calling the game clunky and unplayable, only for me to realize that many people making these extremely critical claims to both Melee and Project M had never even played either game. They were simply offended that some people merely preffered an older entry. Reasonable minds can differ, and people can prefer different games for different reasons, but Project M and Melee are objectively the most responsive games in the series. This is provable with actual numbers. Playing them on laggy HD TVs could arguably cause people to perceive the games as clunky, but by that time, Brawl was also on a standard definition console and suffered from extreme amounts of input buffer. It is possible to make informed assertions on what kinds of games one could like without playing a game, but when it comes to how it "feels", you can't do so without actually holding the controller and playing said game. You can easily see who is making uninformed assertions by questioning them about game mechanics.
    The main crux of the argument is that I am fairly certain that this sort of behaviour plagues the Paper Mario series as well. I've heard many people make wild claims about classic Paper Mario design despite never having actually played said games. That's not everyone, and some criticism is warranted. The backtracking is an issue for example, but the combat itself is arguably very tight (albeit, playing it on a high lag HDTV can make timing feel clunky). Taste can differ, but clearly, the classic Mario RPG formula resonated with many people.
    The same occurs with Fire Emblem as well. You can tell who has no understanding of said games when they make claims like how supports don't exist in games before Awakening, and how it revolutionized the series (*cough* FE 6, and arguably 4, did it first).
    It's fine to like newer games. But just because a game is older, does not mean its design philosophy is antiquated, and it doesn't mean it cannot be modernized and itterated on.

  • @Mymy_64

I should do the same with the other paper Mario inspired games like the outbound ghost and the other ones, since most of the paper Mario inspired games plays as the classic paper Mario games such as paper Mario 64 and paper Mario the thousand year door which is really great because it goes to show that we wanted paper Mario to go back to how it used to be that made the series so great until the sticker star and color splash incident. I grew up with Paper Mario 64 and TTYD. I played sticker starcand hated it. I have Super Paper Mario and I like it because it’s pretty much Paper Mario with OG Super Mario stuff implemented in it. I got Oragami King during my Honeymoon and omg I loved it cuz it brought me back to when I was a kid and even cried when Bobby died. Which also made me mad because the game canonizes when a bob-omb blows up they fully die but in every other paper Mario game it just shoots them up in the air and kinda just disorients them, I mean remember Bombette and Captain, they both have moves where they explode but didn’t die.

    I'm stoked that you were so impressed by Edingir Odyssey 🎉 I'm the guy working on the game, and I've got a couple of informative videos on my channel if you're interested in learning more about the game
    In terms of action commands, the one that wowed you just happens to be inspired by fighting game combos, and most will probably not be that intense or convoluted tbh but my rationale towards action commands is that they should be fun, and make the player feel like they're actually doing those moves

    These Paper Mario/Mario and Luigi inspired games sound really cool. I hope some of these do come out for the Switch.
    However I dislike how bitter old Paper Mario fans use games like Bug Fables to rub it in anyone's face that likes Modern paper Mario, it used to give me the impression that it was made to spite Nintendo and Intelligent Systems because they have no interest in going back but I was wrong. The old fanbase's unwelcoming attitude towards modern Paper Mario fans is the main reason why I don't like the Paper Mario fanbase anymore and it's become just as dividedly toxic as the Sonic fanbase.

    • @bretginn1419
      @bretginn1419 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Honestly, same. I used to love Paper Mario. Still like 64 and Super, and although I don't think TTYD has aged well, I can still have fun with it. Sticker Star was shit, I agree, and Color Splash still has some issues, as does Origami King. But it gets aggravating when a lot of arguments for CS and OK get shut down just because it's not the original games, and play Bug Fables instead. Heck, often it comes up to not wanting a new game that retreads old ground and just wanting a full copy of TTYD. It's gotten to a point I actively try to stay away from Paper Mario related subjects.

    • @jeremyknight9980
      @jeremyknight9980 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@bretginn1419 Oh I bet if they did finally decide to go back old fans would still tear it down for not finding interesting ways to build on TTYD's gameplay, still being in a Paper world (Which I still don't know why that bothers people when PM's never been canon along with M and L) have original characters not be as creative looking as the first 3 or complain about the story either focusing on magical paper/arts/crafts or not living up to SPM's steaks.
      I do the same thing, I mostly avoid Paper Mario as a topic because it isn't worththe headache. When Nintendo put up that trailer for Paper Mario 64 for NSO expansion the comment section was filled with people arguing about how Modern Paper Mario sucks. Origami King gave me the impression that most people were finally giving Modern Paper Mario a chance but no, the discussion is just as disheartening and unwelcoming as it was 6 years ago with Color Splash.
      Maybe a port of TTYD or a Paper Mario collection could be a good idea. No way the fanbase would be okay with them remaking the first 3 knowing how much they hate the current artstyle, them worrying that they'll simplify original characters to be more standard looking or changing things.

    It's a shame when indie developers are making better, REAL Paper Mario games (And not that Sticker Star-esque crap) than Nintendo can. You'd think seeing how popular these games are that Nintendo could understand that there's a huge demand for a traditional TTYD-style Paper Mario game, but these are the same people that can't be bothered to even make a single F-Zero game in almost 20 years, even when people are clamoring for it.
    If there's any developer than has a host franchises that hold so much potential, but that gets completely squandered, it's Nintendo.

    8:56 legit, I will admit that is my initial thought process. Not denying that I don't like the classic gameplay. but it would be cool to see people Take some of the modern paper mario battle gimmicks but do something unique with their gimmicks. There is a way to combine classic paper mario with craft paper mario, even with originality. Would I play any of these games? As soon as I replay Super Paper Mario, and actually beat Color Splash, and actually give my definitive ranking on all 6 [7 if it get revealed sometime between now and sometime in 2024.]

    Underhero is another game that is inspired by Paper Mario and Mario and Luigi.
    Unfortunately Bug Fables execution is not very good. It's an RPG that leans towards giving enemies high health and defense to increase the difficulty rather than just raising their attack, so battles drag and wear out their welcome quickly. The medal/badge system is also a complete disaster with medals costing lots of points points and also having major drawbacks in exchange for the benefit. The P-up, d-down that cost 2 points in Paper Mario costs 5 points in Bug Fables and many other medals also subtract your attack, so you'll be dealing even less damage against increasingly more tanky enemies if you equip those and some medals that would not be a good tradeoff if it cost 0 points. Also the attack roles lead to situations where if someone dies, you are so crippled there is no reviving and coming back; you should just let everyone die and save yourself 10-15 minutes and a bunch of items trying to survive. The battle system is good on paper, but needed a bit more polishing; it was one of the most painful RPGs I played, and the rest of it wasn't too bad.

    • @PaulPower4
      @PaulPower4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I mean, if you want enemies to have less defence and more attack, that's what the Deep Taunt medal is for ;)
      I honestly never thought they were too bad, though admittedly I was playing on normal. I think ultimately the main reason the enemies are generally tankier is because you get three attacks per round (four if/when you get Chompy) to PM's two, but their attacks do less damage because your party is generally a lot less tanky: my endgame team had Kabbu with 17HP and Vi and Leif at 11HP each, so an attack that did 6 damage was a serious threat in a way it wouldn't have been in endgame TYD, where Mario and his partners might be rolling round with 30+ HP each.
      I think the Power Exchanges and Defence Exchanges are the price they are because they're meant to be selling more as BF's Power Plus and Defend Plus, and I think that's partly to make you think harder about your build but also again because you have three party members and you can specialise them if you want - turning Kabbu into a big taunting tank with things like Back Support and Defence Exchange (... and Favourite One, which is kinda why he needed that extra defence), and having him take as much heat as possible for a glass-cannony Vi (for massive single-target damage) or Leif (for crowd control) with Power Exchange. It might perhaps be the same way that Quick Change went from 4BP to 7BP as partners in TYD got HP and became more their own thing.
