    I loved Bonk games on TG 16 growing up, and now this video has really encouraged me to keep my eyes out for this one to add to my collection. Thank you for sharing!

    So I have been going back through some of my favorite content creators and watching videos that aren't marked as "watched". Apparently this was one of them but I swear I watched it before! Well after watching it (again) I believe you presented a great summation of the entire game! Your complaint about the game having too many bonus stages and a boss rush are certainly valid. It does cheapen the experience somewhat and I think the game could have benefited from adding one additional area to give the game more balance. Anyway, this is still one of those live stream playthroughs that I remember so vividly because the game is so colorful and quirky. I am glad you were able to give it a proper shake and enjoyed the experience! EGAR!

      @hungrygoriya  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think you were there for pretty much the entire livestream, so I can see why it might feel like you've seen this entire game (and this footage!) before :) And yeah, I would've appreciated a little more difficulty from some parts of this game but toward the end, those bonus levels were a lifesaver. I'm glad I pushed through this because the last stretch was trouble!

    The enemy eating you is super clever!
    I feel like an adaptation of the One Thousand and One Nights could leverage a concept like that and the confusion that comes with it since that story layers so many stories inside of another in a way that can be easy to lose track of.

    Great review! I haven't played this Bonk, but I have played other Bonk games, specifically Bonk's Revenge. He's such a cute mascot, and his giant form is especially hilarious. I like his wacky Mario-like transformations, too. Game overall looks like fun! I wish I had picked it up for VC back when I was able to!

      @hungrygoriya  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! I'm glad that it was at least released at some point on the VC, but it's a shame to see all of that gone away now. I hope that there will be a future re-release of the game in digital form for those that want to give it a whirl because it really is fun(ny). I wish I'd had a chance to try out some of the other games from this series. I don't want to open up the can of worms that is Turbografx 16 collecting.

    Getting some really weird encoding issues when on 720p on this video. Happens in both Firefox and Chrome even after clearing the browser cache. Maybe its just my having grown up with Mega Man games, which are notorious for their boss rushes, but I think boss rushes can serve a purpose. They give players an opportunity to see how much they've grown by getting to flex on past foes. Of course, they work well in Mega Man games because players are guaranteed to have larger arsenals in the late game. I can understand boss rushes being annoying, though, in games in which players' characters don't change much or at all.

    • @hungrygoriya
      @hungrygoriya  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You have a really good point here! I think like you've said, they do fit in certain contexts but here, it just felt like filler to me. I could've done without them!

    • @Bloodreign1

      Another series known for boss rushes is Konami's Gradius series. The first game didn't have one, nor did Life Force, and Salamander 2, as well as the Game Boy games (or the Wiiware Gradius Rebirth), but the GBA game, the second, third, and fourth arcade games did, the PS1 Gradius Gaiden did, and Gradius V had 2 of them.

    I've always enjoyed the Bonk series, the TG-16 games I have on Wii VC still, enjoy the NES one I was lucky to get locally years ago for $20 when the game had already hit triple digit prices on Ebay, to both Game Boy ones I got off Ebay (first game US, sequel Japanese), and finally, both SNES games, first one found locally for SNES, the sequel, for SFC gotten off Ebay. I love how insane the first SFC game is, Bonk has always been an oddball series, so it fit right in. The sequel was mainly linear, unlike the first game, so no multiple paths to find and play through.

    • @hungrygoriya
      @hungrygoriya  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Bonk series is something I'd like to play more of. I have a TG-16 mini but unfortunately the way I'm set up here has a bit of input lag, which I find really hard to deal with in a platformer. Either way though, good for you for getting your hands on the NES and Game Boy games for a steal!

    Bonk reminds of Toys R Us. I'd see it all the time on the TG 16 demo. And I wanted it and a TG16 so badly. I mean I knew I'd never get it so I didn't push it. But I'd look on wistfully
    It also reminds me of how the place had the box art in a plastic sleeve with tickets for the game below it. You'd take the ticket to the register then go to a booth to get the game after paying. So I'd take tickets of games I really wanted, thinking it would reserve me a copy until I could buy it

  • @Shamazya

    I kind of understand boss rushes but I'm not a huge fan of them either unless they do something to recontextualize the fight. Like maybe you have a power-up now that you wouldn't have had the first fight around with the boss. Or maybe the environment is slightly different and that changes the pattern. But I'm thinking of games with save files. I'd hate that in a game without one.
    I think the point is to show how far you've come and to give the game a little extra length. But really it's just some extra tedium because you know what to do and how to do it and if one of the bosses is unforgiving it just creates a sense of dread.

    • @hungrygoriya

    Fun but weird certainly describes bonk games. I hope you've played more of them. I was introduced via the Gameboy game, and while its not in colour, its probably my fav. It definitely screams I wasn't really made for this companies consoles, and TurboGrafx was definitely where he shined.

      It's funny because the only other Bonk game I've played since this review is Super Genjin 2 on the Super Famicom (this one's follow-up) and it's even weirder! I do have a Turbografx mini and I think there's a few Bonk games on there I could give a try sometime, but the input lag on that system's a little offputting to me. I'd love to give the Game Boy one a whirl some day.

      Yeah, I've tried both SNES ones. Hard to reliably pull off the headbonks, but fun. Bonk got me to try the turbo out, but Gameboy is also one of his cheapest outings, if that helps (unless you've got everdrives). NES I think is most.

    Ha - you're definitely not the only one who finds "Buttcheeks-on-Head"-Bonk off-putting XD
    I only played some of the games either the Virtual Console or PS3 (I had a JP account, and the Japanese PSN has a whole extra "Classics" store that we didn't get - a PC engine store to along with the PSOne and PS2 Classics), but the one I think I'm remembering must be Bonk 3. Still, a version of that was in there, albeit less hideous than this one, and man oh man did I hate "Buttcheek head" whenever he'd show up. God he comes out of nowhere, and he's so unappealing. I don't even know what the _intent_ was with him - it's almost like he's de-evolving or something. But no other "Caveman game" has that kind of thing - not Joe & Mac, not Flintstones, not Prehistorik Man. He sucks. Normal Bonk is pretty cute and likeable - I wish Hudson just stopped making that monstrous version at some point in the series.
    I ALSO hate boss rushes!
    I really like your reviews though (^-^)

    • @hungrygoriya
      @hungrygoriya  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm glad I'm not the only one that was a little taken aback by the style of that version of Bonk... and if they dragged that ugliness through other games, that's unfortunate too! I wish I had dabbled more in the Virtual Console while it was still a thing, but I've missed the PS3 stuff completely, Japan or otherwise. I got a PS3 a few years ago at a thrift store and it sounds like it's a rocket going into space when it's on because the fan is so loud!
      And thanks for stopping over and checking out some reviews. I've got lots of others up in the air but I'm a slow writer, so more are likely to trickle out slowly as they get finished up.
