    Thanks! I've had something about mixing in mono on my mind. Then there was a video from The Recording Revolution about that topic last week, and then I was thinking, "so how would I do it and when?" Thankfully, your video started filling in some of the gaps. I use Logic, so great that you had those examples. I'll also try out StereoDelta, cuz that's a really good example of trying to keep the low end in the mix and not lose it when in mono. Much appreciated.

    How can I account for big changes in loudness from stereo to mono? Some instrument tracks may not sound much worse but the perceived level can change a lot. Should I prioritize the stereo level or should i find a way to have the stereo effects that change less.. perhaps being less wide to begin with?

  • @tesfayetastic
    @tesfayetastic 5 ปีที่แล้ว +16

    Make a video on gain staging and the process / importance of checking prefader metering so your sounds don’t clip when adding plugins, for a long time I didn’t think my tracks were clipping because all I saw was post faders so I struggled to get my mixes loud and clear thinking it was my mixing but it was clipping in the prefader and I never gain staged nor checked them after plugins. I think that video would save a lot of beginners like me, a general video on how to properly start a mix until the point of leveling would be great then tips on things to do to not clip your track pre/post fader with proper monitoring levels for mixing. Also mentioning how you use reference tracks and properly level them in the beginning of your mix too would be mad useful too! Know it’s a lot but these type of tutorials aren’t the ones that get the most views or even talked about as much for beginners. Thanks for your videos tho man, seriously

    • @SeanDivine
      @SeanDivine  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Drifting Away sure thing man! Glad they’re helping. My approach to gain staging isn’t what you might call conventional. I don’t encourage you to be reckless but I’m more aggressive with mixing levels. Essentially, I want to avoid unintentional distortion and leave enough headroom for the mastering process - which if the mix is done properly, you honestly won’t need much :)

    • @tesfayetastic
      @tesfayetastic 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Sean Divine Thanks for the quick reply! And yeah if you could talk about the conventional way versus your way in the video too that would be great! Since you’re an experienced mixer you probably inherently know how much is too hot for you and how to manage that whereas for me I can’t tell without the prefader mixer at this point so a way for beginners to start a mix where they’ll have ample master bus headroom and track headroom would be ideal plus a way to get a reference track to level match whatever overall level your mixing at is something I haven’t seen any good videos on. Because if I were to target all my tracks to -18 dbfs In gain staging then how would I properly level match a reference track to start a balancing my track or what should my monitoring level be at.

    Hey man, thanks for the video! I read that most home speakers, bluetooth speakers and a lot of clubs are in mono, and that it's also important to sound really good in mono to have your song played on the radio. I made the mistake of not referencing in mono often enough during this production and am wondering just how good my mix should sound in mono, even if the radio consideration is a longshot?

    • @SeanDivine
      @SeanDivine  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      it is important, although I think it's commonly misunderstood. a mix simply won't sound as good in mono as it does in stereo, unless your mixing entirely in mono...which makes zero since in 2021. If you're keeping the low end in check and not introducing major stereo issues (i.e. phase cancellation in mono), it's not something to stress too much about :)

  • @MrSubstance

    I get this idea and it works really well. However, sometimes, especially with some stereo VST instruments like Nexus, as soon as you put the mix in mono those sounds are completely messed up. They either disappear or sound terribly low. Even if I have zero effects on the channel, and then switch the channel to mono, it's affected drastically. Any chance of doing a vid using a VSTi like that to show how one can get it to sound great in both mono and stereo?

    • @bhaskarville
      @bhaskarville 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So before you reach the mix stage, bounce everything you have in MIDI, to audio. Don’t switch on mono on your submix unless you have everything in audio. While you’re producing, you should record everything in stereo to get a feel of the stereo field. Mixing starts when you have region in your session bounced to audio.

      stereo is generally the car, most smartphones these days, headphones, bookshelf speakers, soundbars / tvs... it's a fuller, wider, more "natural" perspective. When engineers say they mix in mono, it's simply for an objective perspective on leveling and balance, it doesn't mean they're not considering stereo.

    Some of us are mixing backing tracks for live performance and want those tracks in Mono panned right. (Click track panned left). My guess is there are a few thousand of us out here looking for advice. My mono mix out Right channel sucks...not sure why.

    Would you recommended mixing your reverbs and delay in mono before switching everything to stereo? Thanks

    • @SeanDivine
      @SeanDivine  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      no, actually the opposite... I like wide spaces that are mono compatible :)

      Also, assuming that your putting the gain plugin in mono on your stereo out, would you use all your plugins and audio tracks in stereo then turn off the mono setting in the gain plugin to hear how it sounds in stereo? Thanks.

  • @smilinbeats
    @smilinbeats 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I noticed that you put the gain plugin after the multimeter.. The multimeter didn't react when you switched to mono.

      I wanted you to be listening for the difference rather than just looking at the goniometer (which will just turn into a straight line in mono). If you want to see the changes going to mono, place any metering last in the chain

      a lot of people swear by them... I use the NS-10 to accomplish the same purpose (small, limited low freq response "consumer" speaker)

    What the price range for you mixing a song. I Know you need more info like the song and and I read your website. And tried the request form. But I don't have any song example to send. I would send vocal tracks and a beat that I bought from a producer. Am I looking at in the hundreds or thousands, that's all I want to know. I know you can't give a accurate answer without all the info you need for a estimate. So I can prepare and start recording thanks.
