It took me quite awhile to figure out, that someone's insults have NOTHING to do with myself. They meet someone with light, and feel obligated to delay, destroy or damage someone else, because that is what happened to them. YOU ARE ENOUGH and have always been. No one is a mistake. Whatever you want to do that you've been holding back on is still possible. What we look like is irrelevant. Ego has made us believe that something is wrong. Be gentle with yourself. Pace yourself. Gift yourself back to yourself. Most importantly, be yourself. "There's a deficit of value" yes these societal values are designed to paint a false picture to purposely keep us from seeing our true value(beauty) which should start from the inside out. If we only see the outside that has been held up as a model of beauty(value), based on a dynamic that does not fit all, then we fall prey to its falsehoods. Once we understand "beauty or value" is not a "one size fits all" then we are able to stand and accept our own standard. The beauty of the "Woman King" is it helps us to appreciate this.

Auntie Vi.... omg... this movie! THIS MOVIE literally spoke to me! I am a survivor of sex trafficking, and I identified with this movie heavily. I told myself for years that my tears didn't matter. No matter what I do, in my mirror all I can see are my inner scars. I struggle with not noticing my beauty because my scars were the only thing that defined me... until this movie!!!! There's so much to unpack! All I know is that what I saw on that screen were portrayals of real women. The fact that she faced and beat the man who had assaulted her, she faced herself, she faced her weaknesses... and she found healing. Beyond the dope fighting scenes and obvious fierceness of these women, I was able to identify with the main character. It inspired me in so many ways, including being fit! Seeing real black women in such a fierce and firey role did something deep down for me! This is my absolute favorite chick flick!!!!!!

I didn't expect the telling of the Warrior King would be a perfect story. There were many factors involved and made for a complicated telling. But nothing is ever perfect, especially history. This account is based in history, but it isn't a documentary and allowances must be given for creative efforts as story unfolds. The film was tastefully done. It projected the honor and strength that should be afforded the illustrious women warriors. I was grateful for the efforts of Ms. Davis and her production company. I trust the film is seen by many, as fewer of our stories will be put on the big screen if not.
My favorite actress is always so thoughtful in her responses during interviews. Her book is as encouraging and authentically engaging as her interviews. She's an inspiration! Thank you, Mrs. Davis, for your contribution to the industry!
I Saw the movie with my adult son, We Loved it, I'm going to see it with my granddaughter, with my daughters and friends too!!! Viola Davis and cast were wonderfully inspiring! Oh and Yes we DO want to see these type movies based off of History!
Dahomeys were slavers. They were pro slavery of black Africans by black Africans as chattle, instead of human beings. That is also part of this history. Viola Davis is a gifted actress. But the Dahomey tribe were just as evil as white slavers in America were. So it wasn't based off of history. It sounds like an exciting movie, and well produced, with gifted actors. But it is the opposite of the history.
This weekend I will be seeing this movie. Honestly, we have needed this movie ages, ago. Those women were powerful, but people must know that their lives were never glamorous. Those women were taken at a young age to fight for their kingdom, and were not able to marry. Saw the movie. Was wowed by the presence of an awesome cast of strong beautiful black women. I also watched Lupita's documentary rep'ing the truth of the Dahomey and their participation in the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade. While it is wonderful to feel proud of the strength of the Agoji it is equally painful to reflect upon the impact they had on the slave trade. I think it is important to note that Matteo Curacao, President of Benin, came to USA in 1999 to apologize, seek forgiveness and reconcilIation for Dahomey's participation in THE slave trade. We were not made aware of this gesture. He was dismissed by our country but I personally think it would have gone a loing way toward healing a piece or part of the wound whose blood and infection continues to so affect us today. So proud of this movie and the opportunity it presents to open the channels of communication that can lead to healing us as a people - ONE LOVE ✊🔴🖤🌍👑
We need to really support this film because she is speaking truth and facts. All of the people of African descent that is upset because our own people participated in a trade will still see films by people that have no problem praising the Royal Family and other white establishments that have done wrong to their own people. This is nothing out of the ordinary. The point is it is not a simple scenario because slavery and regards to African nations back in that time frame was not the same slavery under the guys of what rulers regardless if it was from britain, France, germany, portugal, spain,. Slavery in Africa among Africans was not based on skin color necessarily, but it was often based on deeming another ethnicity or people as lower in value from their own. So you can cut the coping excuses and just acknowledge slavery was universal instead of continuing to try and claim perpetual, never ending, undeserved victim status simply because of skin color. It isn’t a good excuse and never has been, especially in this day and age. Grow up.

She was also flexing about her job, signs of insecurity. What made this interesting is Viola. She's effing smart and can connect to the audience even to the person watching this video.

They are the largest ethnic group in Benin found particularly in its south region; they are also found in southwest Nigeria and Togo. In the 60s -- 1960s, I was vicariously introduced to them through pictures and music. SO! No where did I state "I KNEW THEM;" for - in large part - due to Western Civilizations attempts at annihilating ancient African, Asian & Indigenous peoples history & original contributions -- NONE OF US know any of the aforementioned. My wife and I will be seeing this soon. I will reserve the critque after I see it. My concerns are 1. Does this film further an anti heterosexual black male agenda? 2. Is this really a black film? ( In front of and behind the camera, The resourceses and money and support to make this movie. 3. What is the actual true story behind this film and who turned down doing the film. ( who was the first choice for the part of the lead player) 4. And lastly does this film piggyback other agendas on top of what is supposed to be...is. Black History.
I'm grateful you realize, film can't be critiqued without having been seen. But to your first two questions: 1. There is no sexual activity shown during this movie only a heterosexual kiss. It tells the story of female warriors, why would one think of some sexual agenda? 2. This film cost $50M to make. I didn't realize there was any other color to money besides "green". The film has grossed $36M so far. A film has to earn the cost of itself to really be considered as having been marketable. I hope it does make the cost and even more. But where and how the money for production comes, does that really denote whether it is a "black film"? Don't mistake that money spent determines whether it is a "black film" or not. I would like to think the film has elements that portray a world view intriguing to more than just blacks. The theme has more to do with the topic of the film, not the money. But film should have crossover potential to aid in marketing. Money itself is definitely important consideration. Especially if those topics are to be visited again on film.

Dahomeys were slavers. They were pro slavery of black Africans by black Africans as chattle, instead of human beings. That is also part of this history. Viola Davis is a gifted actress. But the Dahomey tribe were just as evil as white slavers in America were. So it wasn't based off of history. It sounds like an exciting movie, and well produced, with gifted actors. But it is the opposite of the history.

Those women were taken at a young age to fight for their kingdom, and were not able to marry. Saw the movie. Was wowed by the presence of an awesome cast of strong beautiful black women. I also watched Lupita's documentary rep'ing the truth of the Dahomey and their participation in the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade. While it is wonderful to feel proud of the strength of the Agoji it is equally painful to reflect upon the impact they had on the slave trade. I think it is important to note that Matteo Curacao, President of Benin, came to USA in 1999 to apologize, seek forgiveness and reconcilIation for Dahomey's participation in THE slave trade. We were not made aware of this gesture. He was dismissed by our country but I personally think it would have gone a loing way toward healing a piece or part of the wound whose blood and infection continues to so affect us today. So proud of this movie and the opportunity it presents to open the channels of communication that can lead to healing us as a people - ONE LOVE ✊🔴🖤🌍👑

We need to really support this film because she is speaking truth and facts. All of the people of African descent that is upset because our own people participated in a trade will still see films by people that have no problem praising the Royal Family and other white establishments that have done wrong to their own people. This is nothing out of the ordinary. The point is it is not a simple scenario because slavery and regards to African nations back in that time frame was not the same slavery under the guys of what rulers regardless if it was from britain, France, germany, portugal, spain,. It is not the same and we need to be clear about that before we want to demonize everything the same. Yes all cultures have slavery, but it was not to the degree. Because, it was not racially motivated. It was about different ethnicities not race

Slavery in Africa among Africans was not based on skin color necessarily, but it was often based on deeming another ethnicity or people as lower in value from their own. So you can cut the coping excuses and just acknowledge slavery was universal instead of continuing to try and claim perpetual, never ending, undeserved victim status simply because of skin color. It isn’t a good excuse and never has been, especially in this day and age. Grow up.

The interviewer can't look at Viola Davis eye to eye. She kept on avoiding to look at her. I would not trust a person who can't look at me in the eyes while we are talking. She was also flexing about her job, signs of insecurity. What made this interesting is Viola. She's effing smart and can connect to the audience even to the person watching this video.
Love this interview, Viola is so inspiring, because she did the work all those years she can represent that character and give life to it. 👏🏽 I think the day women decide to inspire and fully support each other is the day a lot more doors will open for all types of ideologies and women.

Dahomey - now Benin, has a rich musical tradition based in vocal technique translated TODAY into beautiful oboe melodies accompanied by piano and traditional percussion instruments. The Fon people, also called Fon nu, Agadja or Dahomey, are a Gbe ethnic group. They are the largest ethnic group in Benin found particularly in its south region; they are also found in southwest Nigeria and Togo. In the 60s -- 1960s, I was vicariously introduced to them through pictures and music. SO! No where did I state "I KNEW THEM;" for - in large part - due to Western Civilizations attempts at annihilating ancient African, Asian & Indigenous peoples history & original contributions -- NONE OF US know any of the aforementioned. Check out Zora Neal Hurston's book- Barracoon: Story of the last Black Cargo/ May 2018. She interviews one of the last survivors of Clotilda/last slave ship. Cudjo Lewis describes in detail his village being ravaged by the Female Dahomey warriors. Who were masters of Decapitation.

My wife and I will be seeing this soon. I will reserve the critque after I see it. My concerns are 1. Does this film further an anti heterosexual black male agenda? 2. Is this really a black film? ( In front of and behind the camera, The resourceses and money and support to make this movie. 3. What is the actual true story behind this film and who turned down doing the film. ( who was the first choice for the part of the lead player) 4. And lastly does this film piggyback other agendas on top of what is supposed to be...is. Black History.
I'm grateful you realize, film can't be critiqued without having been seen. But to your first two questions: 1. There is no sexual activity shown during this movie only a heterosexual kiss. It tells the story of female warriors, why would one think of some sexual agenda? 2. This film cost $50M to make. I didn't realize there was any other color to money besides "green". The film has grossed $36M so far. A film has to earn the cost of itself to really be considered as having been marketable. I hope it does make the cost and even more. But where and how the money for production comes, does that really denote whether it is a "black film"? Don't mistake that money spent determines whether it is a "black film" or not. I would like to think the film has elements that portray a world view intriguing to more than just blacks. The theme has more to do with the topic of the film, not the money. But film should have crossover potential to aid in marketing. Money itself is definitely important consideration. Especially if those topics are to be visited again on film.
