Nicholas Burgess, thank you for your kind words. It’s why I flew gyroplanes for about 46 years. That feel of the wind against a turning rotor is like no other.

He knows how to fly..by the way gyrocopters don't have a collective. Just wanted to correct that. Pure helicopters do...

This one did not have a collective, but there are a few "rare" gyroplanes that do have a collective, so never say never I guess.

You are correct, no collective. So it must be smoke and mirrors right?!!

    • @halfrhovsquared

      - No. Just a commentator who isn't conversant with how an autogyro flies. In his commentary, he said, "He's just entered autorotation". That aircraft was in autorotation from the moment he started his ground-roll.
He also talked about saving the energy so that he could pull the collective during touchdown - there is no collective pitch-control. The vast majority of gyros have fixed-pitched blades. They have neither cyclic nor collective and instead, tilt the entire rotor-head.
It's not at all unusual for people who have some knowledge of other aircraft-types but very little of gyros to completely misunderstand how they fly.

@@halfrhovsquared I know, but I think he did a pretty good job not having any instruction in one that I know of. I miss my Huey collective.!!

We lost a great man and a Vietnam vet a few months ago. He was my pharmacist and flew the first cobras and loaches ( misspelled). You may have known him Guy Foster. What I’m calling the Loaches were the Hughes 4 seaters. He told me stories of flying down roads @ 160 mph with his skids inches from the ground. Rest In Peace Guy and Chris, thank you for your service and the history of American Gyroplane movement cannot be written without a mention of you. I hope Bensen Days makes this year. I missed Mentone. I was set to go but saw that a few of the heavy hitters were not attending so I cancelled my trip. The fear of COVID sucks.

The name Foster does not ring a bell, but my cob webs got disturbed a bit. I trained to fly the Cobra in 1968. It was pretty new then. It still had a few bugs to work out. We could cruise at 200 knots along the railroad tracks in Savannah out to the gunnery ranges at Ft Stewart. That was before they started to "slow" it down. We loaded munitions at the ranges so we were also empty.

Christ,The fact that you installed an Honda engine in. it adds a thrill to it ,Great job , I was there too, probably you won't remember me among such much Ppl

The Honda engine is mainly why I wanted the SnoBird. It was their primary engine and I have always preferred Honda cars as well for their reliability. The SnoBird was a "solid" airframe and took all the rigors of training quite well.

Hello Chris, long time not heard from you. I thought you had retired from flying but this video of you and your wonderful gyro into which I had some training with, reminded me the great instructor you are. If you ever come to Quebec, let me know, I'll be glad to serve as a town guide. Charles Gagne.

Yes, Canada was a good time. I got to visit and fly there many years ago. I still remember the flight in a towed glider that had wooden rotor blades with Edgid (sp). Great time I had flying with you in Frederick Maryland. Yes I retired from active instructing in 2019 after I sold that wonderful “bird” in 2017. It served me for nearly 19 years. It is still flying.!! Still have the sign you made for me. I think my cousin has one of the gyro stickers. Good times for sure Charles. Gyros are so Cool.!! Not the average flying machine and You know that from flying one.

Anton Westergaard, no but he did fly with me in this gyro and took some video. It was before “stabilization” videos several years ago. His video work today is ten times better, so is his equipment.

Thanks but I’m not perfect by a long shot.!! I like the announcer, yea, details a little rough on gyroplanes but he’s pretty good on “most” other rotorcraft. I was happy.

I'm a low time fixed wing commercial/instrument pilot. Would I assume correctly that a gyro copter would be pretty easy for me? They look so much fun I'd like to try it.

    • @christopherburgessgyro-cfi12
      @christopherburgessgyro-cfi12  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Well, not exactly. Rotorcraft and Airplanes are in different categories for a reason. I am fixed-wing rated, commercial helicopter and gyroplane with CFI gyroplane, instrument helicopter. I’ll say basic aeronautical knowledge and such is of course the same, but you will find takeoffs and landings with autorotations and knowledge of the rotor and how to handle it will be a challenge. Once over those hurdles basic flying is about the same. I would be stretching to say it would be easy for you since all pilots are different. Helicopter to gyro pretty easy, fixed wing to gyro is a little more challenging. Go up in one with a current CFI and you will find out for yourself. A couple flight hours with a CFI will reveal how difficult it will be for you. I’ll finish by saying fly before you buy and never think you can do it by yourself, my advice is you can’t. Good going on your fixed-wing ratings.

Perhaps but I’m sure he tried his best with no formal training on the subject. Many folks misunderstand the operation of a gyroplane.
