Greg Clare did my transition to gyro and we did a lot of engine out practice. Abid Farooqui did my transition into the AR-1 that I now fly and we also did a lot of engine outs. Also, Abid and I did almost exclusively power off landings and that really helps develop the sight picture for such a steep angle. Both were very good instructors.
I did not realize that 10 knots increased the energy by 1/3. I expect I an thinking the extra speed would result in a float. Climbing out at your best rate of climb speed generally is very close to the best glide speed as the airfoil is at the AOA which is most efficient. This is a practice which I adhere to religiously. Perhaps adding a bit of cushion and carrying an extra ten is great advice especially during the initial climb. Thanks for the thought provoking instruction.
Kinetic energy is exponential based on velocity squared. At 80 mph=6400, at 60 mph=3600, you have nearly twice the effective energy to convert to “stopping power” in an autorotation
What helmet are you wearing? Is it suitable for helicopter use? Would engine failure on takeoff in a helicopter be much different, or just lower collective and pitch for 65 kt attitude as well.
