You're feeling very common feelings...even for us old teachers! It is hard moving into a new classroom especially when you are first starting out. Things to think about: headphones-put each in numbered gallon bags. The kids are assigned a number. Find a big bucket, or two, and put these gallon bags in them somewhere in the room. If you put them in the desk the kids will destroy them. Ack! Also, be gentle with yourself. You are learning just as the kids will be learning. You will make lots of mistakes and have lots of wins. I make mistakes every year and it is because we are human! Don't compare yourself to other teachers as you are not where they are in your journey. Find some new teachers to watch on youtube or in your district and create a tribe.
I already started comparing myself to the other new hires 😭 Thank you for the friendly reminder that not everyone is on the same track. All the school staff are friendly and supportive at my site, so it eases off some of the nerves. Also, thank you for sharing an idea to store the headphones! Time to make a trip to Target.
Classroom came out great! My advice for procedures would be to focus on general concepts: arriving to school, exiting the classroom to (specials, bathroom, lunch/recess), end of day cleaning. Once you know what those concepts should look like in your classroom and what you like, then you can move on to more specific concepts like classroom instruction, read alouds, small groups. If you ever need any advice let me know!
Good luck!! I'm just a mom with a 2nd grader, but I love following teachers to see their activities and thoughts about different subjects. You are going to do amazing!
Thank you so so much! It's so interesting to see all the ideas teachers can come up with. Wishing your little one the best school year 🥰 Enjoy every moment before they grow up before you know it!
Omg girl! THANK YOU! I’m a first year first grade teacher and i related so much!! I hope you have a wonderful year with your kiddos, and i can’t wait to see your next video!!
You are doing great! Classroom set up is hard...so much to do and to purchase, especially your first year as a teacher. It does take a long time! I am so excited for you and your new first grade classroom and students! There are a lot of fun musical name games that I found on youtube from music teachers that I also used in my general ed first grade classroom and they loved it...anything musical they enjoy! TPT has a LOT of FREE RESOURCES on teaching/checklists for routines and procedures for the first day/week of school.
I just got my student roster and I'm mixed with so many different emotions! Thank you for reminding me about how much students need music in their lives. Everything is flying over my head now 😅
Hey sis! Congratulations to you on oyur first year of teaching! Excited for you and supporting you all the way. I definitely want to encourage you to be bold about your plans. If you've taken time to think through strategies and processes you think would work for your classroom, then boldly try them out. I would also encourage you to not feel like you need to change things because others did them a certain way. In my first year, I did things completely different from what I saw most teachers doing because I saw how it could help my kids and I'm glad I did because they benefitted from it. I also want to encourage you to not overthink things. Your first year is the best time to explore as a teacher and learn what works for you and your style of teaching that best supports your students. As you learn, document and implement so that when the next year comes around you aren't starting from scratch. Lastly, be kind, patient and graceful with yourself. Don't take things too hard especially if they don't work out. Just think of them as learning curves. Rooting for you!
Yay I'm excited for you!! I never knew any teachers who went through WGU, so it was a very intimidating process. Remember to be kind to yourself just as you'd be to your own students ♥
Congrats, I’m using this as motivation to finish my degree. I’m listening to this while making sun catchers for my future classroom 😅. I hope your school year goes well, you’ll be a great teacher❤
@@wearingskirtsdiary I’m starting my second year Monday, but I work in after school programs so I’m super excited. 😆 I hope the rest of your schooling years goes well🫶🏾
Yesss spend that time to think about and prep the little things that make you happy in your classroom! Good luck with the rest of your teacher journey 💗
When it comes to classroom routines and procedures, start off with simple activities, such as entering and exiting a classroom. You build up any future routines( handing in work, taking out materials, putting away materials, walking a certain path or route in the classroom) over time and adjust them as needed. You can list daily on the board what things they have done well in class regarding behaviors and expectations, and list which ones require more effort. Store the headphones in large plastic tubs because the kids will destroy the headphones if they are in their desks. Show the students how to carry the headphones so that they dont pull them by the chords. It is okay not to have everything up on your walls. Divide your classroom into quadrants and work on each section for a set amount of time so that you don't feel as overwhelmed. Remember that it takes about three years to get used to the teaching profession. Seek support as needed from your other colleagues when it comes to setting up a schedule and be sure to adjust it as needed to find the best way to make the day flow. Take care and best wishes to you.
WOW thank you for all the helpful tips!! Keeping it in mind that the students are just as overwhelmed as I am on the first day of school. I got very lucky to be at a school with strong collaboration. Also, just bought gallon ziplock bags and containers for the headphones!
Thank you! I know there's a lot of backlash on clip charts. I'm going to try it out for the beginning of the school year and if it doesn't work, then it'll be taken down.
This is so wholesome 🥹 preparing to take my basic skills exam in October and then doing all my methods courses starting in November (plus a biology course and U.S constitution course) To see how far you’ve come really gives me hope and shows me that the finish line is so near!! Keep making amazing content ❤

@@ms.trinh.teaches thank you 😁 we are gonna have fun i know it ;)
Those colorful boxes could be student mailboxes. One Fab teacher has great videos on routines and procedures! You’ve got this!!
Omg I forgot about her channel! I used to watch her all the time. Student mailboxes would work perfectly!

You’re going to be a great teacher! But, one suggestion is to maybe reconsider using a clip chart.
Thank you! I know there's a lot of backlash on clip charts. I'm going to try it out for the beginning of the school year and if it doesn't work, then it'll be taken down.
Do a classroom tour on TH-cam.
