    I served as a gunners mate in turret one on the Uss Iowa. It was an awesome feeling firing those guns. It was also cool knowing you were impervious to anything except a submarine attack.

    I hope I wasn't the only one who teared up when they started talking about how the New Jersey and Missouri were turned into museums instead of ingloriously scrapped like common cargo haulers.
    Those are some damn fine ships. Damn fine. The world will never see their like again.

      kenneth mcgriff USS New Jersey tore the Vietnamese apart. Her history was pretty good. Their service in Korea and Vietnam shows that carrier craft can still be shot down-- shells cannot.

    Emotional video for me . Its sad we will never see ships like that in action ever again. Today's warfare is too small for such a grand lady. At least through World of Warship we can still maintain her memory as the most powerful warship ever built.

      When the Missouri was deployed in the Gulf War, she was fitted with Phalanx, SAM missles, Tomohawk cruise missles & her 16" guns. Legend goes, when the 16" inchers opened up on the enemy, they all retreated & moved their equipment more than 30 miles inland.

    The Iowa class battleships are by far my Favorite battleships. And could still be a major threat to modern warships with their mixture of modern radars, tomahawk cruise missiles, Harpoon anti-ship missiles, phalanx missile defense systems, dual purpose twin 5" guns and her primary 16" guns with RC spotter planes and black hawk helicopters she is one of the most heavily and diversely armed ship ever to sail the seven seas

    ALL the Iowa Class ships were the zenith of U.S. battleship construction. It would have been amazing to see what the Montana Class would have looked like but unfortunately, we'll never know. I was able to visit both the USS New Jersey and the USS Wisconsin the fall of 2014. The Wisconsin is beautifully kept. The New Jersey is a totally different story. The people that have been given the honor of keeping New Jersey in excellent condition have failed dismally. They should be ashamed at how they have let that ship deteriorate. as badly as it has. It really makes me mad as hell. All four of those ships have a fighting soul. They are deserving of having their appearance of beauty and strength maintained during peace time as they did during times of war. The Iowa Class Battleships and the HMS Hood Battlecruiser to me, are the most beautifully designed fighting ships.......EVER!!

    I was on board the USS Missouri during fleet week in Seattle. Sadly after she left Seattle they sailed to California and offloaded the ammo and then came back to Seattle to start the decommissioning process but it was still cool to stand on the very spot were WWII ended and walk the decks of a active duty battleship and we even got to go up on the bridge.

    Y'know, if these ships were modernized, (railguns, nuclear reactors, Phalanx guns, Tomahawks and AA missiles) they'd easily be the most powerful ships afloat. It'd be expensive, but these ships have paid for themselves over and over again, so surely we could spare a bit more to refit them and keep them relevant _another_ fifty years.

    That was a pretty good history lesson on the Iowa's. Reading some of the comments about bringing them back from museum pieces and installing rail guns and LAWS, is interesting, but I think impractical. They would make a good platform for these advanced weapons. Of course if they were ever to see action and be sunk or be badly damaged we would lose a great American warship. They are better off as floating museums, saved from the scrap heaps that have taken other lesser yet just as deserving warships. If you have a chance to catch a tour of one of the four (or maybe all four) I would highly recommend it. Maybe someday, the Navy will find a a need for a fully modern Battleship once again.

    A ship of the Iowa Class is the ship. Yes, THE ship!
    Even beside this documentary I think these were The ships. The Iowas define the meaning of ship.
    Majestic Iowa class all day long \0/

    • @ukexpat6893
      @ukexpat6893 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I really cannot under stand the somewhat silly adoration for these ships. As a class none of them did any real fighting and they were not even the best of sea boats. They really did nothing to deserve being preserved. If you wanted to preserve some WW2 ships then why not pick some of the aircraft carriers? At least they earned the honour of preservation whilst the Iowa's clearly didn't.

    • @metaknight115
      @metaknight115 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ukexpat6893 A, the Iowas were the longest and fastest battleships ever built
      B, They were the most powerful ships ever built by the US navy
      C: They were the longest served battleships of any country
      D: While it is true they never really sunk anything of note, with Missouri and Wisconsin never coming into contact with an enemy vessel, Iowa sinking a training ship, and New Jersey sinking an armored fishing boat, a destroyer, a training cruiser, and a few small Vietnamese warboats, they did have cool feats in their service history. Iowa housed the US president Rosevelt for a nine day journey and was the first of her class. New Jersey "sunk" an island and is the most decorated battleship in the US navy, and the signing of the declaration to end ww2 happened aboard Missouri's deck. Missouri was the last battleship to use her main guns in anger. Wisconsin, however, never really had anything of note.
      While I like the Yamato, Sharnhorst, Washington, and Warspite more, the Iowa, New Jersey, and Missouri all remain some of my favorite battleships of all time, and they definitively deserve to be preserved
      Also, we have five preserved carriers, and yes, I know your comment is five years old

    4:14 yeah, i call bull, the 18 inchers on the Yamato class, the barrels were too short for that to be reality, plus the weight and size of the shell had greater drag than the iowa class 16 inches, so the iowas can out range Yamato, and be safe.

    This is the absolute peak of Battleship engineering.... high speed, good armor, powerful long range guns topped with the best sensors and technology of the 1940’s / 1980’s.... Yamato might’ve been bigger.... but Mighty Moe and the Iowa class battleships had the best of both eastern and western technology and adaptabilities.... just my opinion at least

    • @metaknight115
      @metaknight115 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They had powerful guns, capable if rivaling Yamato's penetration power from long ranges due to a higher muzzle velocity and great plunging fire, and had very accurate guns and great speed. She did suffer from below average armor and bad sea keeping.

      @ichasegaming  10 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @Liamflynnphoto
      @Liamflynnphoto 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      The improved iowas were to be called the Montana class fast battleship. Among the improvements were thicker armor, more powerful engines, larger, four 16/50 turrets, and many other smaller improvements. There was also two other Iowa class battleships that were still being built at wars end the USS Illinois BB-65 and the USS Kentucky BB-66. The Iowa class was a beautiful ship and they have stood the test of time with each at least 70 years old

This is not true, the sailors on board were ordered to try experimental powder charges that did not handle ramming operations the same was as the legacy charges. Against the recommendations of the seasoned sailors BTW. When the last bag was rammed home the friction caused the detonation.

      dc71knox pros of CVs they can save you from long distance land bombers, give you air support, they are floating airbases, and the most American thing we have. Cons of CVs they can melt-down, turn into a massive bonfire at sea, big target, can become an Japanese airfield (holes everywhere), and defenseless in a naval gun engagement. pros of BBs big and menacing, armed to the teeth, like a cat (annoying and dangerous), is going to win a gun engagement, can fire shells that aren't accurate but explosive, and can project power cons of battleships Yuge target, worse off against missiles, can lose a turret, can get surprised by submarine and can get focused to death

    • @honghayun5886
      @honghayun5886 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      WW3 will start because of terrorist attack happen most of this time after WW2. Pretty much the morden war/battle always start at land and sea. Past war/battle are always battle at land (unleast they have ships to battle). The World War never end until the end of the day (which is you can sucked by black hole). Or if there's a person who controls a whole world will say: "the World War era is over and no more world war battles".
      BTW, you are telling from this vid everyone about in reality. Not in game because the company said that there's little bit different info about the ship in game. You are not telling us the real info in-game information ships

      I feel that ww3 will be big on airpower, and unfortunately we provably won't see as much tank action or warship action.
      In this age of ICBMs, stealth aircraft, and pretty soon, lasers and railguns, it's not really a matter of who's got the best boat, but who has the longest range.
      IE: an Iowa class wouldn't be much use against a ground installation sporting defenses capable of shooting down her sea to land cruise missiles, and could easily have her hull perforated by a land based railgun system once detected.

    If these are the US tier 9 ships, does that mean that the never built Montana class will be the tier 10 battleship or are the Yamatos the only tier 10 Battleships in the game? If it's anything like WoT, I'm expecting many never-built ship classes to be included, along with ship classes that were built during but entered service too late to participate in the war.

      22steve5150 If it's anything like the other two (and there ain't enough WWII or even pre-WWII ships to fill the russian tech tree, so there's gonna be a fuckload of ships never made, maybe not even designed) then yup, there'll be plenty of only designed ships in the game. Can't even say they were prototyped either, 'cause they only designed naval ships. Prototyping a naval ship costs a hell of a lot more materials and money then prototyping an aircraft or tank.

    wonder in tier 9s and 10s battles we will mostly see aircraft carriers battling it out and the role of the battleships and cruisers is the last line of defense when the aircraft make it pass the destroyers in the outer ring but i don't thank that will be the cast due to we don't coordinate our attacks like in today's navy and i don't think theirs not a lot of money and XP to be made on taking down aircrafts. the way i seen it is the role of the destroyer is that of recon and skirmishers for the fleet and the bigger capital ships is bringing the firepower to the enemy in a line of battle like the ships of the line in the 1700s but with aircraft carriers it redefined naval warfare, well i don't think we can pull this kind of coordination in the game.
