Not really, Erlang Shen and Sun Wukong are friends. Even after he burned down Sun Wukong’s house and made the flower fruit mountain monkies homeless.
They even spent a chapters afterwards killing a demon together.
The Celestial Host sucks which I'd why Erlang Shen isn't one of them. He does freelance stuff from heaven for pay because he also doesn't like them much.
Tldr: Erlang Shen would never be a Heaven shill. He hates his uncle to much. Him and Monkey King are bros! 😭
What a babble. Clearly he is not even really in the game, and this plays after the book. Also, the beginning is more underwhelming than the beginning in the book (which then turns more ordinary too, though).
@bfkc111 This takes place before the Journey begins, doesn't it? Wukong rages against the 100,000 soldiers and Generals of Heaven, is defeated by Erleng Shen, and is left imprisoned on the mountain to think about his actions until Xuanzang frees him and he pledges his service to him. Unless I have my chronology wrong. It HAS been a while since I've read that series.

Yeah I mean it is a video game but they mentioned the og lore like Erlang Shen capturing Wukong, and the fact that wukong was made a Buddha but they probably retconned some aspects as is normal

@@InvokeZeroYes. I’m not to sure on the game but judging by my knowledge of the hierarchy, I’d think the massive Guy in the middle is Divine General Nehza or The Jade Emperor. Erlang Shens Giant Form looks different to these.

This game is set after Journey to the West, and knowing the story actually helps clear some things up that Wukong in this cutscene. Particularly when Wukong says "except for that pig, you tell the tallest tales", he is referencing 豬八戒 Zhu Bajie, one of the disciples that Wukong travelled alongside who was notorious for lying and his rebellious behaviour towards the main character of JttW - Tang Sanzang - and Wukong himself. This just really shows how well educated the writers and Devs were and how exceptionally detailed this game can be, referencing various people or events that the average person would be oblivious to.
They kept his transformations accurate too

@@narkopolo5629when your ps5 innevitably does the same thing do yourself a favour and get a t10 (or t9 maybe) security screwdriver. Follow a video to clean out the inside and it will be good as new. That PS4 was 100% repairable just needed dusting.

Ok, since the announcement I was skeptical of the game but this intro alone squaches all those doubts because this is peak cinema. Legit one of the best introductions I've seen for a video game

YES! All the lip siync is done for the Chinese audio and holy shit the atmosphere and the voice acting on the Chinese version is insanely awesome.

I sometimes hear people say "ew Chinese sounds terrible." even if the VA is amazing in a movie, chinese game, chinese anime, etc. But say, in japanese anime or japanese games, they always love it. I've always seen that idolization of the Japanese language but no credit for Chinese (pun not intended) and honestly the Japanese as a whole. It's got me a bit sad thinking about it.
I don't mean any harm to the Japanese. I do love both asians' cultures and languages, but to see people put Japanese (and to an extent, Koreans) on a pedestal among all other Asians has me a bit insecure. I'm sorry, but it's just how I feel. 😞

I pre-ordered this mainly cuz I know Dragon Ball was also inspired by Journey to the West. I'm seeing all the subtleties of where Dragon Ball got its shtick from. This game also feels like God of War and Asura's Wrath had a baby

If you can't understand the opening CG, you can think of it as:The Heavenly Court is like the CIA, and the monkey used to be a former mob boss. His mission to "go legit" involves delivering an important NPC to pick up some crucial items. After the job's done, they promise the monkey a spot in the system, but along the way, the monkey takes out quite a few of his old mob buddies. In the end, the monkey decides he doesn't want the spot anymore and just wants to retire to the mountains. The CIA, though, plans to kill him to tie up loose ends.

In this story, Even gods and Buddhas are not truly immortal, or rather, their immortality comes at a cost. One of the simplest methods (as mentioned by Crane Immortal in the dialogue of Chapter 4) is to consume elixirs made by Yaoguai. The entire Spider Cavern is essentially a breeding ground for Yaoguai, who are eventually refined into elixirs for the gods of the Heavenly Court to consume.
This is a massive interest group, which is why, at the very beginning of the game, Sun Wukong said to Erlang Shen: "Immortality, for that word all realms and beings have ruined themselves." To be honest, when I first saw this line, I thought it was just a sarcastic remark, but it turned out to be a harsh truth.
Why does The Monkey Guy sound like a supervillain while the other guy sounds like a superhero.
I mean, if we're being technical, Wukong basically started as a villain where he went around taking what he wants and beating the crap out of other people, sometimes for shits and giggles. He mellowed during the Journey of the West but bro was on demon time before he met his master.

To be fair, the majority of asian audiences, especially those from East Asian countries knows that Goku is based on Sun Wukong. Western audiences aren't that familiar with this fact because Journey to the West doesn't have the same strong presence there in comparison

No. In fact, Er Lang could not defeat Sun Wu Kong. At that juncture, Sun Wu Kong was up against a whole bevy of heavenly deities in addition to Er Lang Shen. According to the novel, he was much distracted by the defeat and retreat of his own monkey army on the ground against the onslaught of the heavenly troops and deities as he could not go to their rescue. That caused him not to sustain the battle against Er Lang Shen.

Both in the novel and the game, hes dont want to fully 1vs1 so he got help and that doesn mean he weaker or equal to Wukong. He had greater immormality level, greater spell, greater origin, greater training.
Just no, the only ones fit to defeat Wukong before Buddhahood is Gautama/Sakyamuni Buddha himself and the likes of him.@@pingukutepro

You're not playing as Wukong. That other monkey is basically you, the destined one.

The original Wukong is physically dead but his spirit lives while scattered into 6 relics. The protagonist, the destined one or who you are playing, is revisiting those important locations and ppl once showed up in the Journey to the West. You are trying to collect all relics so as to revive Wukong, but as far as I know, finally you inherit Wukong’s spirit and become his spiritually reincarnated version.
