All shots are fired from a distance of 100 yards so as to encompass the majority of common real world hunting scenarios.
I will be shooting into 10% ballistics gel from www.clearballi... that has been calibrated to meet the FBI ballistics testing protocol.
While ballistics gel isn’t an exact proxy for big game, small game, predators or defensive situations, it does provide a repeatable medium through which to test various bullets and ammunitions against each other.
With each type of ammo tested I collect data on bullet penetration depth, bullet weight retention, bullet expansion and muzzle velocity.
For reference, bullet expansion is measured at the widest expanded point using a calibrated Frankford Arsenal Digital Caliper.
Bullet weight is measured using a calibrated Frankford Arsenal Digital Scale after having removed as much ballistics gel as possible from the expanded bullets.
Bullet velocity is measured using a ProChronoPal chronograph set approximately 7’ from the shooting bench.
I am fully aware that a chronograph measuring bullet velocity from 7’ away from the muzzle is going to register a slower velocity than if velocity were measured directly at the muzzle, but that difference is going to be so small as to be all but irrelevant in regards to comparison of actual measured velocity versus factory stated velocity.
My goal with these ballistics gel tests is to provide hunters like you and I with the most objective information possible to help us make the best choice for our particular hunting situation.
The results of these tests are my own and I cannot guarantee the same or similar performance on your part. The views and opinions expressed in this video are solely my own.
All videos are filmed in a safe and controlled environment on a private range with all applicable safety precautions by a trained professional.

Can you give us a test of the Federal .270 Winchester 150 grain round nose Power Shock? You kinda promised and left us jumping up and down for more quality test video on .270.

For anything 98% of the hunters out there will EVER shoot with their .270 this stuff is actually delivering performance way above the demands put on it. On even a monster size 300 pound deer this is a lightning bolt in a blue box as far as the real hunting world is concerned. Put one of these pills through an elk broad side properly and its lights out on the elk too even if there are 5 or 6 "better" loads out there for shooting elk, moose, or whatever.
Federal has been my favorite for several decades
That’s actually very good performance for a 130 grain cup and core bullet starting out at over 3000 fps. If you’re shooting deer up close with the .270 and you want to stick with cup and core basic ammo, the 150 grain power-shok is a better load, however. The 130 holds together a lot better when you shoot deer past 200. However, the last deer I shot with the 130 grain power-shok was at 150 yards and it dropped in It’s tracks.

Across the board, Federal ammo seems to be a notch above most other brands. Their Fusion line is my favorite. Thanks for all the work you put into your videos. The problem that I have with them is that as soon as I watch the newest one, I cant wait til the next one!
Federal fusion is pricey but worth it.
Haven't got a deer without a pass trough yet.
Would be nice if I could get it to shoot. I went through 15 rounds of 308 150 grain Fed fusion today and another 15 Fed blue box 24.95 at Wahma. The cheap blue box ammo does 0.3" groups at 100 yards while the fusion is 2" at best. Custom Tikka with a 24" #3 Brux 4 groove barrel, AG Composite stock
@@Accuracy1st 4 groove? How is it better than 6 groove, I know the 5R rifling is so the bullet isn't crushed between 2 lands of opposite sides.
@@linkbond08 I didn't mention it was better than 6 groove, just preference. Long time user of 3, 4 groove, 5R. The gun builders tell me there's something about cutting the chamber in a 4 groove barrel, but I can't recall exactly what it was, maybe something about little to no chatter so the chamber is cut about as perfect as can be. Also, when I talked to the cut-rifled barrel makers, many prefer the 4 groove in competition. There's a gun builder with a channel here on youtube who builds very high quality rifles. He prefers 4 groove as well. I'm not as experienced as many but having used them for roughly 20 years, they are the best cut-rifled characteristic in my experience with the 5R a very close second.

I’ve used this exact bullet for 2 years now and I’ve dropped 11 deer with it. The only deer to get away was my fault(poor shot placement). But I’ve not had a shot greater than 150 yards with it either.
I don’t know what you’re talking about. 2x expansion and 27” of penetration from a cheap cup and core. I was actually pleasantly surprised by the performance
The 150 grain powershock is round nose! Let’s see it! One of the only factory loaded round noses on the market.
Of the three "basic" 150 grain loads out there, (Power Point, Power Shock, and Core-Lokt) only the Federal and Remington are truly roundnoses. The Winchester is not a real sharp spitzer, but it's pointed a bit.

@@taasch2505Only slightly better for flatter trajectory. Blunt nose projectiles work real well at short to medium ranges out to 200 yards. After that the more pointed spitzers start showing what their whole reason for being was.
@@johnnorman7708I'm looking for a good hog load in 30-30 and a good mule deer load in 270 winchester. Any suggestions would be appreciated. We will be going to different locations. Deer we are going to be out more in the open, hog is going to be in the woods. I grabbed up a few hunting rifles for good prices. A 270 savage 110, a Savage 340 and Gelnfield 30 both in 30-30. I got these at really good prices, good condition too.
I killed my second largest muley at 18 yards with that exact ammo. Dropped him. The bullet was recovered perfect mushroom just like a Remington corelokt. It was my first an only game animal with factory ammo.
Powershok has always worked well more me. Available just about everywhere and not to expensive.
A hot 130 gr .270 is hard to beat.
I use the .270 Federal PowerShok 130gr to sight in and range ammo.I saw your review of the 136gr Federal Terminal Ascent and use that for hunting. My second choice would be the Federal Fusion.
Hey Mason. Today I went a bit crazy at my local gun shop and bought a Winchester Model 70 Featherweight in .270 (I have one in 30/06) and a Winchester Model 70 Extreme Weather in 300 Win Mag. I have two Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40 scopes waiting for both. I'm going to take a leaf out of your vlogs and try factory ammo for a change in both and I'm leaning towards Federal from what you have shown in terms of performance. The .270 will get use on lightly built chital deer and fallow deer. The 300 Win Mag will be my sambar deer rifle and maybe a trip to Africa on plains game. Anyway I just wanted to share this with you and thank you again for all of your great vlogs that I appreciate you sharing!

The .270 Winchester cartridge was introduced to the Hunting/Shooting public in 1925. At that time they were advertising a 130 grain bullet at 3,160 feet per second at the muzzle. These velocities were likely taken in the longish (26 or 28 inch) barrels then used in the manufacturers own Laboratory.
But since most manufacturers were selling the rifles with 24 inch barrels, I'm sure for the man out in the woods, muzzle velocities were, maybe a bit over 3,000 fps.
But, this was just great for the type of Shooting being done back then! Remember, the manufacturers learned a lot about how to mass produce fine optics during the pressures of WW2. But between 1925 and about 1947, there were either NO Scope sights on the market. Or, those for sale here were of foreign make and thus NOT CHEAP.
So, using your bolt-action .270 with a "peep" sight for most was the norm.
And thus 150 or 200 yards was a very long shot indeed!
But, once the scope sight became available at reasonable prices, and some very fine marksman began taking game out to 300 yards, well the stories ran wild! And the reputation of the .270 as a long range killer was assured!

Terminal ballistics is a fascinating topic.
I truly believe this and the fusion are extremely hard to beat for factory ammo.. cost effective and works 100% every time. I don’t see any reason to not just buy a box and go hunting.. i have recovered a few of these out of moose.. 2 were 180 grain out of .300 win mag and the others were 175 grain out of 7mm rem mag.. they worked perfect. I do think you want to keep impact velocities 2900fps or less for optimal performance though.

Have you considered getting a 24" barrel to test .270 loads & see if performance hits the advertised metrics. Also what are the dimensions of the wound channel? All-in-all, a great channel. 🙂
My Winchester M-70 Super Grade has a 24-inch barrel, and that Blue Box Federal load clocks in at over 3100 fps. I shot several Carabou with it when I lived in Alaska. No matter where you go in the state most general stores will carry Blue Box Federal in the common cartridges. Yeah there are better bullets, but for what they are, is fine for most of the stuff you would want to shoot with a 270 and 130 gr SP. Oh I shot a lot of game with the 130 gr Speer SP. I prefer Nosler Partitions, and Swift A Frames but like everything else not cheap. For the White Tail hunting most do, its fine, I would say better than fine.
I recently purchased a Heym SR21 rifle in 270 Win. While zeroing the rifle l noticed it was shooting sub MOA groups with federal power points in 130 grains. I specially came to recheck this ammo. I guess l will buy some more of this ammo.
My Walmart regularly has the Federal Power Shok .270 Winchester 150 grain soft point now. I would really like to see this load tested here. I think it's an economy "sleeper" load that gets plenty of actual use by deer, bear, and hog hunters , but gets overlooked by those reviewing of ammo.
Years ago I chronographed some gold box Federal premium ammo loaded with 130 grain Sierra Game King boat tail soft points. Out of a 24" barrel they were in the ball park of 3100 FPS. Smokin' right along I would say.
A model 70 Featherweight in 270 shooting 130 grainers is certainly a great muley and pronghorn combo. I do agree a bonded bullet would be a better choice. I really like the cartridge holders you make. I’ll have to look at your website.
I dropped a black bear and a big buck last year with that same ammo. Both dropped on the spot. This ammo hammers hard.
I dropped 2 big whitetail doe at a little over 300 yards with this ammo last Saturday. This stuff hammers them. Thumb size hole going in and a half dollar hole exit. Just performs awesome.
Thank you for including in your testing more common easier to find, lower price ammo lines from Remington, Federal, and Winchester. I especially look forward to you hopefully testing some 150 grain .270 loads from Federal and Remington, my personal favorites for the big swamp bucks.
I'd like to see some accuracy comparison between 130 and 150 too.

Certainly not quite premium performance as you state but pretty dang good for ammunition that is found among the lowest price points. Personally prefer the monothic & bonded bullets to harvest game intended for consumption. However, wouldn't have any concerns about hunting with it. Absolutely no doubt it would be very effective on mid-sized game. Cup and core bullets used effectively to put meat on the table well over 100 years. With that soft point, probably effective out past 450 yards (velocity still over 1900fps) if shooter manages ballistics properly. Thanks for sharing your tests and the data points.

Those are the Federals that they load with Speer Grandslam bullets. They are excellent bullets and very accurate.
Here we are closing in on August already. Gotta get to the range after the heat breaks. Plan on shooting 150 grain .270 and getting a zero with the Federal Power Shok. Wish I could see a review of that load and some other 150 grain .270 Winchester loads. Yeah, that weight is traditional for bigger than deer or for use down in the dark timber when shooting .270. Would like to see my gut instinct regarding the 150 grain Power Shok .270 either confirmed or dispelled.

This is textbook performance. A well placed double lung shot on anything in the lower 48 and you have meat on the table. Velocity and penetration is outstanding. Looks like to Federal is just doing a better job than the comp in terms of velocity on the box and velocity in the field. I think this is esp true vis-a-vis Hornady and Winchester.
Good video. I might have missed it but I don't think you showed anything about its permanent cavity damage in the gel.
I usually don’t bother unless it’s obvious there isn’t much of one (slower cartridges or bullets that don’t expand much). It’s an expanding .277 bullet impacting at around 2,000 miles per hour, it’s going to do substantial internal damage.

I have noticed, between Federal, Remington and Winchester. Federal have always seemed to have a louder pop behind them.
You asked to hear from people who used the 130 grain Power Shok on deer. I did. DRT. The deer just sat down right where it stood. It didn't take one step.
Still waiting patiently for you to test the 150 grain Federal Blue box Power Shock. Our local Walmart has had it in stock real regular since back in Jan.
It’d have been good to have a better look at the damage to the gel. To maybe get an idea on what an exit wound would look like on whitetail.
Any expanding bullet hitting in the high 2000 fps range is going to do substantial internal damage. I usually don’t bother with wound cavity analysis unless there’s an obvious lack thereof.
@@masonoutdoors_masonleather poor exit wounds are a no go for me. If I’m not concerned with exit then I’d choose a rapid fragmentation and leave it all inside.

This is a utilitarian 130 Grain .270 load. I can't see it not being a decent deer load any day. 27" of penetration is one huge deer.
As for velocity, a 24" barrel would have consistently produced 3000 FPS.
I am very impressed with this ammo. Keep in mind that a retained weight of 76% means it the weight it has lost, its 'shrapnel' has done additional damage and enhanced its terminal effect. think you might add velocity to your key metrics; if someone is using factory specs, and the bullet is 200' fps slower, it could affect how much it drops at longer distances. We know they test with a 24" barrel, that is well made and adds to the velocity so with a 270 round from a 22" barrel gets within a 100' per second it hits a metric like 2x expansion or 20" of penetration. I sometimes wonder if some mfg are going a little lite on the powder charge to be able to sell more ammo since 2020? FWIW..
I've shot these in everything I've owned from 243 all the way up too 7mm rm. In a 117 gr 2506 they will explode inside a deer inside 100 yards. Same way w 7 mag. That said for years they was my preferred bullet. Nowadays if I can't find ballistic tips to buy or reload I get these just bc they are a proven bullet that is lethal

I have a model 70 as well..my .270 has dropped countless bucks and many moose..shot placement is key obviously..and I have never lost an animal..I’ve had this gun for 28 years now..and harvest at least 2-4 bucks a year..and most years 1 moose..
They do make a 150 grain power shok for 270 not sure on the 140
Federal is by far the superior ammunition manufacturer. Hornady is held up by there marketing, noslers downside is they’re too expensive. Federal on top!

Thanks! I’ll be doing the Barnes Pioneer 190gr 30-30 load soon, the Buffalo Bore load is way too expensive for me to care what it does, it needs to quarter and debone the meat for what they charge for it 🤣

Federal Blue box has been cleanly killing game for decades. I personally like a weight loss of 20-30% as this allows for those small petals that peel off cut more blood vessels causing a faster bleed. A medium game cartridge bullet that keeps 70-80% of its weight will penetrate plenty well in your average 308, 30-06, 270, 7mm Mag, etc
How fast a bullet opens up @ impact has a lot to do with how much penetration it gets,& how quick energy is released inside the vitals for a quick clean kill. Just my 2 cents worth

@@masonoutdoors_masonleather I was able to chrono 1 round of the 150 grainers and got 2820 from my pre-64 model 70 with the 24” barrel. Haven’t shot a deer with that particular load yet. Curious, I assume you take that 270 featherweight hunting for deer, what ammo do you usually pick for that hunt?
I’ve only taken one deer with that particular rifle so far and used Winchester 150 grain Power Point, it made a real mess of things
The 150gr neuters the 270. Negates everything the cartridge was created for. Go with the 130 grain. It'll take anything in North America

Hey mason leather, could you do this exact same test with Barnes Ttsx. I am going on a moose hunt and would like to see how a .270 win with a monolithic would do for penetration.
What bullet wt? I have and/or load for 8 rifles chambered in 270 Win and have loaded 110s, 130s, 140s, and 150s - TSX and TTSX and the 129 LRX. I'd opt for the 130 TTSX over a very full case of SUPERFORMANCE powder if you handload. I'm getting 3380fps with 24" barrels. When you get that kind of speed, there's nothing a 140 or 150 bullet has to offer inside reasonable shot distances in terms of penetration
I like the 129 grain LRX in 270 I've used superformance powder with that combo also and it works real good lately I've been using RL17 powder and it works great also

130 gr really isn’t light for caliber. It’s the equivalent of a 165 gr 30 cal in terms of sectional density
It is the lighter of the two most common bullet weights available for the 270 Winchester, it is not light-for-caliber

Cup and core is range ammo. Hunting is bonded and copper. Shot a 170lb buck face on with 165 fusion. Hit the front left exiting behind the rib cage. 120 yards. Cup and core look amazing in gel, changes hen they hit bone.
I’ve never killed anything with a bonded bullet, only “cup-and-core.” They can certainly fragment but they also kill things just fine and tend to exit if appropriate bullet weight for caliber is used on the majority of shots.
@@masonoutdoors_masonleather after deer season xp which I hated I changed to bonded. Will try copper this year. Fusion is the best for the money at decent ranges. Did you watch that video meateater did I posted in a comment a few weeks back. Amazing seeing what happened when it hits bone.

I really can't follow the logic of your assessment on this load. Penetration was A+. Expansion was excellent. Your gripe about weight retention seems to be somewhat circular. Why is more weight retention needed? Usually weight retention is desired for deeper penetration. When penetration is already superb I am not sure I follow the logic of your disappointment only that it is not what you are used to seeing, or prefer, even though penetration and expansion are more than adequate and much better than other loads you have given a thumbs up to. You have given your blessing to other loads that do not penetrate nearly as well solely because their weight retention was "better" even though penetration was not so good. This load should be excellent. I would rather have this load giving deeper penetration on moose and elk than a different load that gave less penetration even though it had higher weight retention. Excellent penetration is highly desirable on really big animals. I really don't like the idea of a load that retains 98% of its weight yet penetrates 25-30% less than these.

I said verbatim “I’m happy with it” regarding weight retention.
Penetration is not the be-all-end-all, it is one factor, and there’s always a trade off, in this case retained expansion, as I stated in the video. This is not an elk/moose size class load, this is a whitetail/pronghorn size class load, and for that, I’d rather have a little less penetration and more retained expansion.
If I think of something to criticize any given bullet/load about I will, that’s part of the process.
The 130 grain is "The" bullet for the 270. You shoot anything heavier, you might as well shoot a 30-06. The 270 is for flat shooting with mild recoil.
The 130 grain is perfectly good for elk, moose & bear. I think your testing has proved that. Back when there were no premium bullets, the old guard were dropping heavy game with the 130 grain. 🤠
