Happy Monday everyone! We hope you all had a great weekend and we're kicking off this week comparing two of the most popular compact luxury SUV's and it was a much closer race than you'd think! We also have a comparison video of the Lexus RX versus a BMW X5 and that video should post soon. Let us know below which of these two you would pick for yourself below!

Two weeks ago, we tested the NX450h and the GV70 2.5 Sport Prestige back to back. They had almost identical horsepower (the NX had 4 more) and neither had adaptive suspension.
I didn't like the NX interior design ethos at all. It was a hodge-podge of incompatible shapes and textures, perhaps attractive to someone raised around transformer toys and movies, but not to me. Engine and suspension performance felt disconnected and hesitant. The suspension was so off that I asked the salesman during and after the drive if the tires were improperly inflated.
We drove the GV70 a few minutes later and the experience was like night and day. The well-integrated, tasteful interior displayed a unity of textures and trim, from the knurled metallic of the primary controls to the feature line stretching from the doors, curving over the digital dash display and through the integrated air vents. Driving the GV70 was a pleasure, too, after the discombobulated NX450 ride. Acceleration was smooth, quick and quiet. Body movement was extremely well-controlled with imperceptible road noise, something I did not expect from a vehicle with 21" wheels! Finally, the GV70 was about $8000 less expensive, comparatively equipped, than the Lexus.
We also did a quick around the block turn in the NX F-Sport and GV70 3.5. The F-Sport interior was less appealing than the standard and firming up the adaptive suspension just made the ride a bit less comfortable without noticeably improving handling. Setting the GV70 to Sport and Sport+ made very noticeable changes to suspension compliance, transmission mapping and steering effort. I didn't care for the steering effort changes but the suspension did appear to sharpen turn-in and dramatically reduce lean. The GV70's suspension is more sophisticated with predictive suspension adaption. However, I really didn't think the performance of either the 3.5 engine or suspension was worth the added cost.
I also don't find the GV70 seats too hard; I thought they were more supportive than the Lexus seats. But then, I really like hard, supportive seats!
Finally, I can't see how one can call the Lexus inforainment system more advanced. Was it simply due to the lack of wireless mirroring and the longer screen reach? The GV70 software was better designed with more attractive, higher resolution screen and more logical, more comprehensive functionality. BTW, the 2025 GV70 does support wireless mirroring and apparently it will be enabled via an upcoming OTA update for 2022 through 2024 models.
We pick up our White Pearl GV70 Sport Prestige with Seville Red/Black interior next week...

@@glenn5328 Well, we've owned it for a month and 1200 miles. We've driven it on steep, winding Sierra Nevada roads, over Sonora and Ebbetts passes, through the Valley at 75 mph and in stop and go traffic in 110° temps. Everything works perfectly, the driving dynamics are excellent and a bit surprising given the 21" wheels, and the smooth, powerful 2.5T engine and transmission has been a revelation. In fact, my only complaint is that my cellphone gets quite hot in the charging cubby but that is at least in part due to the crazy hot temps we're having up here.
While time will tell how if the GV70 continues to impress over time, it is by far the best car I've owned in over 50 years, offering a FAR more enjoyable and luxurious drive than the NX350 I tested.

What I think is cool is that the Genesis GV70 shares almost nothing with its Hyundai and Kia equivalents, the Tucson and Sportage. The GV70 rides on a Genesis-exclusive RWD platform, and it doesn't share any engines or transmissions with either of those cars. Those cars also don't offer adaptive dampers, or limited slip differentials, whereas the Genesis does, and the GV70 has standard AWD.
Lexus is very much an amazing, top-tier luxury brand, but I think Genesis does a much better job at differentiaiting their vehicles from their Hyundai and Kia equivalents when compared to Lexus and Toyota.

Lexus NX is the class sales leader, selling about 70k per year. Genesis is showing many makers how to do modern luxury under $75k. The Genesis is definitely much more luxurious, for the same money, but their problem is the brand strength, the sales network and their refusal to invest in a luxury brand.
They are just now building out a dedicated dealer network, and that alone has held down sales, as I have been in Hyundai dealers, asking about Genesis, and the salesmanship has been abysmal. Lexus didn't make that mistake. they built out over 100 dealers, fairly quickly in the early 90's. Hyundai refused to learn from that successful blueprint

Especially when it's a fire risk vs the theta engine recalls where actual fires were reported. Either way They're handling the recalls much better than Hyundai and kia did in the past. Even if you coupled those recalls together they aren't anywhere near some of the more popular brands of cars that people call "reliable". Just looking at the past decade, it seems that there are no Hyundai Group vehicles that actually haven't been recalled for catching on fire in one form or another.
Also, the only reason why they're even addressing the Theta engine recalls was because a whistleblower that used to work at Hyundai came forward. Until that point, they were actively avoiding honoring their warranties.

LOL funniest comment I've seen. My new Santa Fe offers everything the Lexus NX offers. I have two massive screens, dual wireless charging, dual pane sunroof, heads up display, power front and rear seats, soft touch materials on the dash, along the center console, and most of the door panels (NX has more though), ambient lighting, OTA updates, power hatch and hands free function, 360 camera with the fancy aerial sound view like in Audis, rear sun shades, two glove boxes, MASSIVE storage console that is bigger than full size pickups, AWD lock button, UV sterilization feature to clean phones, and so many other things. And fun fact it's basically as quiet as the NX and IMO rides/handles better when considering how much bigger and heavier the car is. Also it comes standard with a 277hp 310lb ft of torque turbo 4 whereas the NX has the shitty and horrific sounding 2.5l N/A 4 cylinder out of a RAV4 😂. Even funnier is the fact the Hyundai costs 10K less and offers a 3rd row that would put the newly released Lexus GX to shame.
Keep dreaming about the NX being a luxury car. It's a RAV4 with extra leather at best. That goes for most Lexus products. I will say though the hybrid phev powertrain is amazing and well thought out. Actually an appealing option but the rest of the car is extremely disappointing.

These vehicles are not really competitors. Genesis, from its inception, was building cars to offer a cheaper, more reliable alternative to German competition. That's why all Genesis vehicles are dedicated RWD platforms with powertrains similar to German base/mid offerings. Lexus took a FWD platform and made it much more premium than the Toyota it's based on. It's beautiful?, reliable and extremely efficient. But it has a CVT. Both nice cars. But not the same flavor at all, imo.

My silver GV70 3.5T with Ultramarine blue interior is supposed to arrive this week. When I first started looking for a new vehicle, Lexus fell off my list pretty early on account of that front grill being reminiscent of the cow catcher on a steam locomotive (and the Toyota grill it's buck-toothed cousin). With the Genesis, I initially test drove the 2.5T on the basis that 300hp was plenty for my needs (I have a car that rips up the pavement when I want to do that). Much to my chagrin however, while the power was fine, I could not get past the sound of the wheezy 4 banger under the hood (never met one that I liked and after this drive, the record remains intact). I then drove the 3.5T and the skies opened up and unfortunately, so did my wallet. But I'm happy with my choice.

I have a 2016 Lexus IS 200T. It was a great interior then, and it still looks pretty decent, but I can't believe how lazy Lexus has been. The latest, yes, the 2024 year model, IS still gets the same interior with just very slight, and albeit WORSE, changes. The infotainment screen went from being integrated into a tablet style, there are glossy plastics now, etc.
I love the new IS exterior design, and I thought hard on taking the plunge, but I just couldn't get a new car and have the same interior as the car I'm driving which is almost 10 years old.
This reminds me of Infiniti. They were doing amazing back then, back when they were producing G35 and G37s. I had a 2013 G37S 6MT at one point. After the Q60 or whatever (the successor to G37) came out, I got the chance to drive a loaner while my G37 was getting its engine replaced under warranty. The Q60 had the SAME keyfob as my G37, and that keyfob had been used for many years even prior to being used for G37. The Q60 had horrible interior with black plastic all over and double screen setup. It was horrible. That's when I realized the reason why Infiniti was on the decline. They are so lazy.

Secondly, the infotainment screen is just in a much more better position for accessibility. In fact the whole interior arrangement looks more uniform and modern compared to the Genesis
Thirdly, it has a smaller hump in the rear, and has more head room.

I believe you are referring to the 4-way lumbar and inflatable side bolsters. We were just at a Genesis event and there is no physical way to adjust the softness of the actual seat bottom cushion. In fact, we’ve never even seen a production car with that ability. Padding is padding and we’ve noticed this issue in other Genesis models as well.

    • @carreraenzo90
      @carreraenzo90 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@theredline Sofyan, no. You adjust the seat cushion firmness by depressing down the (small) botton that controls the electronic thigh extender, or up (as opposed to clicking forward, or back, for the thigh extender function); this is entirely separate from the lumbar support, or the side bolsters (two separate buttons). Only the driver side has this feature, and specific button, hence the passenger seat is always on the soft side. Rear seats are also soft. Why? Because only the drivers seat has the massage function. Very early models had a software glitch later resolved with a firmware update where after completing the massage, the air bladders were left in the full position, especially in the seat cushion. If you Google around on the forums this topic is discussed at length. You are right that this is a rare feature to have on a car, but only Genesis cars with this massage function have them (ie: G70 does not).
Happy to provide some links of even a Genesis TH-cam video on Seat Functionality (can search for Genesis GV80 Seat Functionality and it will be about 1 minute into the video).
As a separate side comment, I 1000% agree with you on shaming Genesis for lack of wireless AA/Carplay. It should be noted that $50-100 USB dongles do exist, and are seamless, work 98% of the time, and I've effectively never had a single day with my car without wireless AA connecting within 10 seconds of me starting the car. That Genesis interior looks amazing, I’m more of a Lexus fan but I have to admit that interior makes the Lexus look not as good. Although I have seen the Lexus in the Palomino interior option with the brown wood and it looks really really good, on par with the Genesis. I think I would prefer the more efficient and easier to use vehicle, I tend to do a lot of long commutes and I drive a lot so an efficient and comfortable vehicle is right up my alley, although the enthusiast in me definitely wants to pick the sporty side of the Genesis

These two share something in common, both brands are critically *overrated* right now in the luxury space but I’d take the Lexus home. I prefer the NX’s styling and less gimmicky tech experience although I appreciate the stance and sportiness of the Genesis. The GV70 becomes less to look at once you reach the c-pillar the design sorta falls flat. The interior of the NX falls flat in my opinion.
