We Need to Talk About Nakama | Part 4 of an Overly Long Analytical Tirade on Fairy Tail

  • 2021 Addendum: The Tirade is a bad video series and you can see why this video is bad here • "I Didn't Get Anything...
    Old Thoughts (as of November 2018): Who cares if not every guild member is important? Also, Elfman and Cana putting too much stock in blood family is kind of the point, since they're wrong, even if there’s still issues like with how Laxus was handled, and Fairy Tail never being punished for doing the same shit bad guys do still a fair point. I think I talk more about problems with this video in Tirade LIES ( • Overly Long Analytical... ).
    Original Description: Fairy Tail is just so utterly perfect, I think. Also Mashima stop ripping of One Piece without having any idea what you're talking about or even knowing how it's done and probably not even realizing you're doing it holy shit.

      Nameless Fag while yeah you are right... you have to remember that they needed to stop it otherwise the demons were going to rofl stomp everyone. But my fucking question is why the hell was such a thing built, the faces were made to be such a stupid fucking weapon it’s kinda a disgrace that that was the basis for the final.
      Who the hell decides, you know wat; let’s build a weapon that’s practically indestructible, and drains magic permanently. Literally 10 percent of the population can’t live without magic otherwise they die, and society functions on it. The idea that the magic council decided to build this weapon as a deterrent was retarded. If anything they should have something like etherion but bigger, I mean how the hell do you show off a weapon as a deterrent when it only works once and the damage is permanently done. At least you can show off etherion and strike fear into people but the faces were not only a one time use, but I wonder how this would stop anyone from invading as how could the enemy know this isn’t just some bluff without showing it off.
      Fairy had some small enjoyable parts but eventually it just shits that feeling of preaching “ideals of family and friendship powers” then the unfathomable power boost comes that then is treated like shit by the next enemy because “he is stronger”.
      When the show becomes a mobile game where you keep taping to get gold merely to upgrade your tap to get more gold is when you know the writer should either be fired or the show taken down after the season finale.

    You also should have mentioned that they cheated in the grand magic games. Two Fairy Tail teams? Mavis helping them in the last game which is against the rules? Mavis giving Cana Fairy Glitter two win the MPF game? The fact that Mavis interfered in a lot of those games as a third-party-member is against the rules and it pissed me off that it was all cool because it was Fairy Tail

      Also, Nakama power is stated to be the strongest thing in Fairy Tail, but Natsu beats Sting and Rogue alone when their friendship is stronger than his. They did a freaking Unison Raid and he pushed his partner down a mine shaft.

      Yeah, the fact that Fairy Tail's "friendship" is somehow superior to everyone else's friendships really rubs me the wrong way and plus, that bit of Natsu being a complete hypocrite after spouting more of his hollow, repetitive friendship speeches and then immediately and selfishly pushed Gajeel away just to hog the fight with Sting/Rogue for himself and without any hint of him being aware of the terms "irony" and "hypocrisy".
      Come on, that was supposed to be a tag team match and yet he pushed his own partner away just to hog the fight for himself? Shouldn't Natsu automatically be disqualified by default? Geez, everything about what Fairy Tail tries to represent just rings hollow and fails big time!

    • @meto9552
      @meto9552 7 ปีที่แล้ว +67

      Psychological power boosts such as friendship should never overcome Physical strength! It's ok to let them lose that makes them human after all. But Fairy Tail is literally all mighty. They're not human, their actions have no consequences and the lesson you learn is that no matter what, always trust your friends and you can achieve anything! That's way to naive! That is not how the world works!

    • @Lycosyncer
      @Lycosyncer 7 ปีที่แล้ว +59

      With how Mashima just keeps making everything way too unbelievably easy for Fairy Tail to win so easily with no struggles whatsoever with nothing of consequence happening, is it any reason why this series gets criticized a lot for being the worst example of what shounen has to offer?
      Also, with the way how Fairy Tail acts, it really does feel like a bad cult and the fact that they believe that they have more authority over everyone else despite how they look down on following the rules, they really aren't very good responsible heroes, aren't they?

  • @DrKnockOut1115
    @DrKnockOut1115 7 ปีที่แล้ว +156

    One thing that particularly confused me during the final arc was when Mashima revealed that three major antagonists, Zeref, Irene and August, were related to FT members. Unlike with Ivan, whose assholish behavior made it very simple for Laxus to choose Fairy Tail over him despite being family, Mashima seems to want to tug on our heartstrings with these familial "bonds" despite the sentiment being completely one-sided.
    Natsu never once seemed to care that he and Zeref were brothers, nor did he seem to care enough about their parents to show any interest beyond the few seconds during which he was shown what they looked like. The few times when he addresses Zeref as "Big Brother" come off as sarcastic. As soon as he's defeated Zeref, he walks out on him without a second thought.
    Ezra outright states that she doesn't consider Irene family, and initially, Irene doesn't care about her either. Then we're told that Irene lied (for unspecified reasons) about the circumstances for abandoning Erza, and despite spending their entire fight spewing hatred at her and trying to kill her (nobody can tell me that she was faking it, especially after the meteor), she apparently loved Erza all along. So she kills herself to spare a daughter who still doesn't even really care about her. Erza, and the audience, are too confused to be mournful.
    Mavis doesn't even learn that she's related to August. I'm still questioning when and how that even happened, partly because of Mashima's apparent aversion to drawing pregnant females (see Irene above, and the woman Jackal took hostage).

    • @YouluC
      @YouluC 7 ปีที่แล้ว +45

      Don't forget the baffling fact that Mavis had been pregnant in the first place. Mavis had the same curse as Zeref, the more caring they are about life and loving things the more lives they take and decay. Just a mere kiss had killed Mavis (or whatever happened to make her a ghost), so how the hell did they create August?

      Sting and Rouge were to cocky for there own good. Yea Laxus was cocky but because of how power full he was he could back it up. When watching the fight for the first time I noticed both Sting and Rouge had to keep powering up through out the fight to even go toe to toe with the fairy tail dragon slayers. Natsu analysed there moves so he was able to strike back at them that's development for Natsu he's gotten a lot smarter. Like we saw last season he tells happy that he shouldn't use a lot of his magic energy and preserve it. Natsu seems to be way stronger than the twin dragons he didn't need to train. I liked that even in there dragon force forms he still beat them. It exposed sting and rouge to be a bunch of frauds lying about killing there dragons.

  • @kingrocky7519
    @kingrocky7519 6 ปีที่แล้ว +27

    I think one of the issues in Fairy Tail is that it doesn't really explain the actions of a lot of its main cast and often excuses them for what are arguably horrible things simply because they are "family". It kinda shows how, when you really look at it, the Fairy Tail guild can actually be pretty selfish and puts their own feelings people above the well-being of others.
    Remember when Laxus tried to murder a whole town with Fairy Law? It was heavily implied that that's what would've happened if it had activated, and yet despite that, he was allowed back into the guild because he did one good thing later in the series. And yes, I know that the reason the spell didn't work was because deep down he didn't want to hurt his friends or some bullshit. But that's actually irrelevant because 1.) Laxus had no idea that the spell would fail and was genuinely shocked when it did and 2.) what you feel "deep down" does not matter, it is your actions that matter. At the end of the day, Laxus tried to murder all his friends and potentially a few innocent people because... Makarov kicked his dad out of the guild? It's not the only example of how even examining these character's and their motivations just a LITTLE bit can lead to you realizing that these guys are shitty people.

    • @matthewreyes5951
      @matthewreyes5951 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You're absolutely right. The fact that Laxus only got a slap on the wrist for attempted mass murder almost made me drop Fairy Tail then and there (I did eventually drop it after Edolas as I reached my limit of bullshit I could stomach). Hiro Mashima simply cannot write consequences for the members of Fairy Tail in any way no matter what they do.
      Another thing to add was if the guild members hadn't taken down Thunder Palace, that spell would've nuked the town regardless of what Laxus "felt".

    An easy fix would be downsizing the guild. Less members means more fleshing out of certain characters and having more focus. Fairy Tail caused MORE destruction than The Strawhats and they are being kept in check for their actions. Fairy Tail just gets away with anything being above the law. If there was a law. They achieved their goal in the end and became the authority of the entire world because they answer to no one.

    Regarding Levy as a background character then crucifying her like we’re supposed to care, she should have been in the Daybreak Arc to establish a friendship with Lucy. Maybe even switch her with Natsu completely to give her and Lucy a larger bond. Even Jet and Droy could have done some things there.
    Warren (And I think even Max) has very useful powers that could have easily helped out in multiple occasions. Warren would make a good way for the members to obtain information when one finds out something important, and he even can use his powers to trick the enemies with thoughts.

    You know, watching this video has just given me something to contemplate: what is the difference between Fairy Tail and the Whitebeard Pirates that makes the former pretentious and the latter enduring? Both are run by old guys voiced by R Bruce Elliot who position themselves as a surrogate father to their groups, both are run with the mentality of a family over all else, and yet as said in the video, both are too large in membership for everybody in the group to be a significant family member. So what's the difference between the two?

    • @invincible203

      I'd say the difference is that not everyone in the whitebeard pirates knows everyone in the whitebeard pirates. In the whitebeard pirates, they are all adults who are willing to kill and sacrifice each other; hence being part of a pirate crew. They will fight for each other but don't expect to win based on friendship because, as we saw in marineford, nakama bullshit doesn't work. The endearing thing about the whitebeard pirates is that not all of them are important or have a big role and it's understandable that not everyone knows everyone. In Fairy Tail, it's implied everyone knows everyone but we only know 20 ish characters out of 100s when every one of those characters act like they know the others inside and out; it's especially pretentious when you consider that these other mages must be on missions too.

    • @mr.unknown731
      @mr.unknown731 6 ปีที่แล้ว +48

      Simple. Cause Fairy Tail can get away with Bullshit with no consequences also pull a rabbit out of a hat during conflicts to get the upperhand in every situation. The WhiteBeard pirates are endearing because they acknowledged real world problems and know that logic is also needed to win. Even if a situation seemed hopeless they would fight to their last breath with their brothers. Showing a certain military brotherhood as well as family bonds. Also they are portrated not to be invincible on several occasion and can lose momentum in dire situations. As evident of Luffy's pivotal role of being a beacon of hope for them in that Marineford war several times. They understand and accept the possibility of casualties in war but will gladly still fight for their brother. Fairy Tail on the other hand gets out with no scratches and no real sense of duty compared to the WhiteBeard pirates.

    • @halfdemonprince
      @halfdemonprince 6 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      The difference is the Whitebeard Pirates aren’t the main characters of One Piece, the Straw Hats are. Therefore they can get away with emphasizing the idea of “family is more than blood” without showing it in full detail. Despite not being the main crew, the show still uses clever techniques to show the audience why the Whitebeard Pirates are a family. One tactic was Ace, who was the ambassador of the Whitebeard pirates for the audience. During the Marineford Arc we got to see a flashback of how he met Whitebeard and become is surrogate son, the watch him bond with the other members of the crew. When Ace asked Marco why everyone calls Whitebeard “pops,” he said it’s because he calls them sons, and since they're all criminals with nowhere else to go they all feel at home with Whitebeard on his ship. When Sengoku asked Ace to reveal his father’s identity and he answered, “My father is Whitebeard,” then immediately disowned his biological father. When Whitebeard and his crew came to Ace’s aid, he cried and begged them to retreat and let him to die so they wouldn’t have to. Ace was willing to sacrifice himself for the sake of his family, and the Whitebeard Pirates we ready to die in combat to rescue him from the strongest military force in the world. The second tactic was showing Whitebeard’s feelings and reactions towards his sons. In episode 316, Shanks tells Whitebeard to stop Ace from pursuing Teach. Whitebeard refuses and tells Shanks that the one rule that no one can ever break is killing one of his sons, which is what Teach did. Even though Whitebeard initially warned Ace that chasing Teach could be problematic, he didn’t stop him because he and Ace shared the same feelings of rage and anguish and felt that this was the only way to avenge their family member. We got to see those feeling again when Whitebeard ordered his crew to take Ace and leave while he stayed behind to fight the Navy because he couldn’t take watching his sons die anymore. Even when one of his former crew mates, Squard, stabs him in the chest he still hugged and forgave him because he knew he couldn’t have possibly done it without because tricked by an outside force and he still loved him. The final blow was a flashback showing Whitebeard is his younger years with one of his crew mates asking him why he didn’t want any treasure, and responds with, “There’s only one thing I really want, I want a family.” That was all the proof we needed to understand how the Whitebeard Pirates were a real family.

    The fucking nakama bullshit power-ups is what really killed Fairy Tail for me. Just because you have friends and you want to protect them will not and must not guarantee you the win! For example look at the nakama bullshit with Erza(0:16) Azuma had her beat and then out of nowhere "Oh I have my nakama behind me, friendship slash! WIN!". This has to be a fucking joke no way is this serious! And yet it is. And to think I actually liked Erza in the beginning, believing her to be a role model for females everywhere. Hiro Mashima you disappointed all of us.

    You know, coming to the Tartaros rc, you realize how hypocritical the magic issue with Edolas was. Jelall banishes magic in Edolas? Had to be done. Right thing to do. People are going to suffer, but everything will be okay because humans will survive.
    Mard Geer banishing magic in their world with FACE? Aw hell no, this is the worst thing EVER! Civilization's crumbling before our eyes!
    You've made a good point about Edolas. It's a topic that was just too deep and serious to be handled properly in such a light and joyful series that wants to cover any evils with the championing of friendship and love.

    • @Nothingness4907
      @Nothingness4907 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      1) The main difference is that while in Edolas everything remains without magical power at Earth-Land Tartaros and all the other demons of Zeref would still have access to the Curses and no one could stop them anymore
      2) The wizards of Earthland would suffer from Hypomagia and end up in very serious physical conditions that would lead to the death of all wizards on the continent
      3) The magic at Edolas was already coming to an end and the only way to supply their world was to turn the inhabitants of Earthland into Lacryma by kidnapping and killing them, indeed that choosing this way Mystogan preferred to have Edolas adapt to a world without magic, Earthland has never been this problem and therefore there is no need to deprive him of magic
      4) Without magic they could not defend themselves from the Empire of Alvarez and Zeref's plan would have been completed

    I never noticed this when I was watching the anime but when you point it out it seems obvious. It felt like I was constantly waiting for a meaningful conflict to come along and for the story to finally go somewhere but it never did. By the time the Edolas arc rolled in, I realised that I didn't care anymore and I dropped the series. Looking back on it, it's all sort of hollow. None of the characters have concrete goals (unless you count 'protect my friends with my life!', which is... kind of a motivation?). Stuff happens, but it never feels like the story is moving forward. And frankly, the concept of unconditional love and acceptance is nice but in action it's really quite boring.

    • @CheddahSlammer
      @CheddahSlammer 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      tbh One Piece does it too, for example Luffy and Bon Clay, their is no real reason why Bon Clay likes Luffy, and the only reason Luffy likes him is because he saved the straw hats once, but for some reason he goes out of his way to sacrifice himself for Luffy and the Strawhats not once but twice because of a Friendship that is not really well established.

    • @ravenhunter7227
      @ravenhunter7227 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I agree with this statement, and I was trying to highlight Oda's ability to mention a character in one sector of the story, and then fully introduce the character, adding backstory and the like later on. Personally, I could never do this. I'd most likely retcon or discard that character, as seeing them as unsatisfactory, or out of place. One Piece is not a perfect series, and that should be acknowledged. There are many things that the reader still doesn't know, and aspects that seem to have been forgotten, or like the Bon Clay situation, are poorly established and explained. I think that most people feel that the time Bon Clay and Luffy have spent in Impel Down is reason enough for Bon Clay to sacrifice himself during the end of the Impel Down Arc. He may also have wanted to save the many other people that were present during the end of the arc, such as his former boss, Crocodile, former acquaintances, Mr. 1 and Mr. 3, as well as Emporio Ivankov and his/her allies, which he had specifically aimed to free after his escape. These are also people that are heading to Marineford to participate in the Paramount War, which, depending on Bon clay's stance on the issue, may have been another viable reason to sacrifice himself. Also I just really don't like Fairy Tail.

    • @CheddahSlammer
      @CheddahSlammer 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I understand, i was pointing out the character flaws in both series. I was also recently watching Impel Down, and for me the Bon Clay friendship with Luffy was really rushed, and based off that simple meeting back on the Straw hats ship their friends. Not to mention Bon Clay is still alive according to a cover story and in charge of level 5.5. I personally like Fairy Tail, its not my favorite, but certain things don't bother me to the extent they do others, I do acknowledge the problems are their but for me its mainly Fairy Tail has problem with executing certain things, compared to One Piece which is my favorite. I also think people nitpick Fairy Tail for Shonen tropes that are in all Shonen series. .

    Not bad, but you seem to be confusing unconditional love with fanatical affection. If you deeply and truly love someone, then, if they do something bad you either punish them for that action or attempt to correct them (because you care enough about them to love them). While a mere fanatical affection (like nearly all of the people into Idol culture) it doesn't matter what that someone does so long as they are in your arbitrary liking (like being in Markarovs guild rather than anyone elses).

    I have a question, what would have happened if one member aka Lucy would have been an assassin who killed many and Phantom lord came to kill her?
    My guess would be that they would still safe her and still let her be part of the family, it is what I call bad. I mean we don't even know the reason why she wanted to go to fairy tail , we don't even know how her Family became rich in the first place. I mean just look at her father and don't tell me that he did things wrong.
    Hiro Mashima let's Natsu , Gray, Erza and Wendy have a whole few episodes of there past while Lucy only gets a few minutes. Bad writing of my favorite character over 9000, (sorry just had to)

Unfortunately, the girl joined fairy tail yesterday, so it seemed the guild was prepared to fight him over the random girl. Which made it funnier when she revealed an evil personality and possessed everyone. And don't even get me started on the ghost dragon slayer.

    Um, just so you know? One Piece fans out there? I get it. The foundation is solid unlike Fairy Tail. There were some inspirations from the One Piece manga Hiro Mashima used to make Fairy Tail as well. Plus there's a lot of asspulls made on the alvarez arc that made me, a fairy tail fan, couldn't help but cringe on the outcome of the story....But if there's one thing I've learned from Fairy tail in real life.. It's about being a music lover. Yes. It has nothing to do with plot or friendship or fanservice. It's all about music. And I started to love music more because of fairy tail. The ones that got me on the feels are the sad
    fairy tail music. It made me cry. It helped me alleviate some of my stress a bit. The emotion of the song is "there" whenever I hear it. And that's pretty much why I'm still on this series....because of the music they used. xD

    Late to the Party here but when I was young I remember Gajeel was the one who crucified Levi and friends. After that Arc Gajeel easily becomes part of the guild despite that. He had this awkward relationship with Levi and eventually hints at being Romantic. Always thought that was incredibly disgusting even back then. How I met your mother? I beat her and her friends and crucified them to a tree.
    You mention Laxus Arc which I actually remembered really enjoying. Now the context of Laxus throwing a Tantrum because of Bloodline is really dumb. What did he want in the first place to make his own guild? He wouldve been guildmaster either way. Did he want to destroy Fairy Tail? In the end deep down he loved Fairy Tail so what gives. If theyre supposed to be family why hurt them in the first place? Why ask Mirajane a Family member to Strip for his pleasure. Thats just fucked up. Why threaten innocents? He shouldve rot in jail for that.
    The whole were still family in the end with the finger pointing up seem sweet and great closer to the arc until you remember that he was a piece of shit also the fact that it just rips off Vivi’s farewell in One Piece. God Fairy Tail was never good lol.

    Fairy tail is chess board story telling Character goes here character goes there anything to get us to the next fight as fast as possible with no slower moments to flush out the characters it's okay to have simple characters. As long as you flush them out because despite what Mashima might thing Simple does not mean mindless like Natsu is, If there was a scene were we at least see Elfman Consider the possibility of him delivering the bomb go back and forth.
    A bit and eventually refuse and try's to save his sister with his own power because the family he's made through connection's mean just as much as the Family who is his blood. The insistence to eqate everything to the collective, that Erza shows, is probably because Mashima is Japanese and they are a collective society.
    In Mashima's eyes Knightwalker truly was in the wrong.

    So I'm aware I may be a rare anomaly here, but I love Fairy Tail?? Yes i can understand how you hate it and sometimes the weird "oh that climax wasn't actually the climax because it was a lie suffer for another 20 years" can be annoying and how everything doesn't really make sense, plot armour, nakama bullshit etc. But idk i don't notice a lot of the more complicated things you've pointed out in your videos cuz I'm dumb and i actually enjoy the hype fights and it makes just enough sense to carry a plot?
    But i also believed Jellal when he said he had a fiance so..

      Many of the scenes in Fairy Tail are well executed. Mashima does understand how to draw a good scene. The comic is good at being dumb fun.
      It just does not hold up if you look any closer. Kind of like the new Star Wars movies.

      Schwarzer Ritter "Mashima does understand how to draw a good scene" Care to elaborate? I was trying to finish the manga as fast as I could, so I didn't really have time to think about stuff like paneling.

    • @schwarzerritter5724
      @schwarzerritter5724 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I am not talking about paneling. What I mean is that the scenes are drawn and written in a way so that you think there is more going on than it is. Link when Natsu fights the final boss of the arc. He is too weak, eats some magic, which gives him the powerup he needs to win. A powerful scene, but it does not make sense in context, because it was established he can not do that.
      Or when Erza fights someone, another swordmage, I think. She is not strong enough to land a hit, so takes her armour off, because it was like a crutch holding her back, or something. A powerful scene, because it sacrifices defense for offense. Except it does not make sense in context, because her armour is enchanted and increases her attack power as well. It would be like Spiderman is loosing a fight, so he throws away his webshooters and wins.

      Schwarzer Ritter Oh, yeah, I see what you mean. I think Craftsdwarf also said this in one of his videos.

    • @thornray1025

      I'm seriously thinking about re-reading AND re-watching all of Fairy tail so I can study it and learn as much as possible from it. I feel like I'm already good enough writer to know what's good so watching good shows doesn't really give me that much anymore at least in the regard of learning about writing. Bad shows might have lot more to offer in a way.
      Also, Mashima is legit good in creating hype, it's just that he never goes through with it.
