How to lay concrete pavers using a mold

  • Ever wondered how concrete pavers are made and how sometimes they manage to look so random and yet to fit perfectly together like pieces of a puzzle? It’s quite simple actually. The secret is a concrete paver mold. It lets you create a cool pattern and to lay multiple pavers at once and all you need is the mold and your concrete mix.

    I have that mold and only filled in each individual opening one time. After that I noticed the stones separated, so I changed gears and laid the concrete out evenly and used the mold as a deep “stamp” over the top of the concrete. Worked great, looked great and no separation of stones.

    If you do it like this the path will move, sink, crack and slowly disintegrate into a dusty mess. First, make sure to have a solid (compacted) aggregate (stone) sub base. Then mix concrete 4 sand and stone (all in) mix to 1 cement add colour to the mix make sure it is the exact same amounts each time you make a mix, use buckets or plastic containers for sand, cement, colour and water with every mix. IMPORTANT always use the same cement, never change to a different manufacture (if Blue Circle cement, keep it blue circle cement) as the mix will be a different colour with different cement. Don't make the mix too wet or too dry. Level the concrete and wait until the top of the concrete starts to set (a little crusty), but not let it go hard. Use supported scaffolding planks, on cement or ash blocks to go above the concrete, making sure not touch the mix, then use the mold as a stamp only, don't go too deep, you just want the pattern. This will give you a solid path that will last for years. Don't go too deep and don't fill the gaps in the pattern, as you can brush or wash the dirt/dust and any weeds growing in the dirt/dust gaps out over time.

      With the quickrete mold, the pattern doesn't go all the way day. There are gaps under the lines so the bottom layer is all connected. I could see there being a problem with each section of mold moving, since there's nothing to connect them.

    • @wengfookchia4691
      @wengfookchia4691 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      My experience is using concrete and not mortar. Once you finished filling up all the holes and level the surfaces, gently lift up the mould using both hand at opposite direction. Try to lift up slowly and give a little shake. It will be able to lift up easily. Lift the mould up immediately after you finished the filling up and level the surfaces. It will be fine. The challenge come in filling up the gap between the different parcels of the mould and between the mould. Do it the next day by filling up with dry cement mortar powder and sprinkle with water later 😊

      I done roughly 10.5 square meters in 2 days. About 68 molds about 40cm X 40cm, dug out the top soil filled with gravel and sand mix, used a compactor on it set up screed edges and it took time by back was soar, I found them hard to do at first, my mold seemed to be a bit deformed, dipped about 2mm from edge to centre, I used a small spirit level and took care to try level the mold as I went along, I found the tabs on the edges that help to lift up the mold, were making my lines go off square, I ended up cutting 2 of the tabs off so as I could keep everything lined up, I would if I was to use it again it to make 4 legs for the mold so and fill them deeper so as the base of the moulded concrete would be one piece and the shape on top so the bricks are not separate, I'll upload a shirt video if anyone interested.

    • @mikehammer7419
      @mikehammer7419 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@fathergratwick if you look at the beginning of the video, the bag he's using is from a manufacturer in Germany and says "cement mortar" on the label. Hydrolic cement would cost a fortune and only has a very limited working time. Totally wrong application for this. Finishing concrete is skim layer material that is made to be used with a bonding agent to put on existing concrete. I've done several hundred of these and it's labor intensive work that I want to last for a long time so I followed the manufacturers instructions. If you're just looking to make a slick TH-cam video, make it out of Plaster of Paris, I don't care. For the rest of you, 80 lb. bag of quikrete and a gallon of water is good for 1 1/2 molds. Adjust water sparingly. You can take the mold off as soon as you're done filling it. Rinse it out after every two or three fills and if you're making a bunch of these, rent a mixer.

      Apparently, there are two ways. If you want more of a “paver” effect and don’t need something with a lot of structural integrity, you would simply pour the mix into the mold. For making a porch or driveway, you would pour the concrete to the desired thickness, then (as you suggested) press the mold into the concrete, then pull it out after it has set a bit. You would likely need at least two molds if you are doing something that size.

      That's because this video shows a legitimate way, but you can get the same effect in a MUCH less time-consuming way. If all you're really wanting to achieve is the design, the ultra QUICK & EASY way is to use the mold as a stamp on laid and slightly cured cement such that it doesn't completely separate the cement into bricks - I'd say the mold (stamp) should be pressed down only 1/2". That way, you achieve a design that's easy to brush or blow clean of accumulated debris from the indentations as necessary throughout the year. A comment by @Pac Man on this wrong way video is the QUICK & EASY way that would get everything laid in a single morning or afternoon. Pac Man writes: "First, make sure to have a solid (compacted) aggregate (stone) sub base. Don't go too deep and don't fill the gaps in the pattern, as you can brush or wash the dirt/dust and any weeds growing in the dirt/dust gaps out over time." Here's a video that shows the QUICK & EASY way: th-cam.com/video/husIn0qEmAc/w-d-xo.html . Now, an even better method: th-cam.com/video/19Arfiy0YF0/w-d-xo.html .

    Pretty stupid not to show how soon and careful you have to be to take that mold out. He probably waited too long and couldn’t get the mold out without ruining it or pulled it out too soon and messed up the job also and then edited the video not to show he could complete the job properly.

      Craig I didn’t see him do other tiles. Nobody knows who did other tiles. That’s the whole point of showing a video how it’s done.

    • @CraigToddOfficial
      @CraigToddOfficial 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bitcoincrypto2731 it is what it is, plastic concrete mould in the shape of the finished concrete. Can't really go wrong... The more expensive and more durable way would be to utilise a concrete pour and stamp with unprinted concrete tiles. Though it doesn't look bad at all using these plastic moulds for simple garden steps or patio. I imagine it would be rather long lasting if the mix is right.

    • @bitcoincrypto2731
      @bitcoincrypto2731 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Craig I know what it is. It’s not a big deal. I’ve used it myself and it’s easy to mess it up if you don’t do it right. That’s why it’s important to show people the whole process, not just first part. It’s the same as showing how to make lemon ricotta pancakes, pour pancake mix in the pan and cut the video short without showing how to finish the product and what it looks like when completed. I just thought it was funny.
