    Don’t forget in a tight situation like that and with help, you can easily turn the boat within her berth. Use warps to get her facing the way you want prior to departure. Fender up the stern quarter, put a long line on the bow back to the pontoon behind her stern and someone can pull her around. You can also spring her around to help the person if the wind hinders things. With the bow thruster working, you didn’t need this method. It’s good to remember the basics sometimes, the thruster may not always work or be effective due to wind current etc...👍

      Haha I know what you mean but the build project is all pretty exciting at the moment... I’m sure we’ll be back on a boat before long though 🙂

    When anchoring where there are a lot of other boats, is there some Magic formula for deciding how close you can get to another boat?

    • @daveamies5031
      @daveamies5031 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not exactly magic, just basic maths, the rule of thumb is you want to take the depth of the water (at high tide) + the hight of your bow roller above the water and times this by 7 (5 as a minimum, 7 is best and in storms you may want to even go to 10 times). this "magic" number is called scope and is how much chain or chain + rope you want to let out from your boat.
      So as an example if the water is 4m deep and your bow roller is 1m above the water, then you let out ~35m of chain, and your bow will swing in a circle of about 34m (you can use Pythagoras Theorem to figure this out) and if your boat is 10m long then you want to anchor 44m + some breathing room so about 50m from the nearest boat.
      In practice your boat won't usually swing in a 44m circle (unless you get a storm or strong tidal flow) but you also don't want your boat sitting in the water above someone else's anchor, and you want to allow for some safety margin just incase your anchor drags.
      The reason you don't want to go under 5 times the depth is because you want the chain to pull horizontally on the anchor not vertically.
      With local knowledge you can can sometimes take shortcuts, like if you know there is not going to be a storm or the boat won't swing on the tide because you won't still be anchored when the tide changes, but generally it's not worth taking the extra risk, just go somewhere else where you can be sure you are safe..
      Also if someone who was anchored there before you says you are too close to them then you should move.
