    It's so funny that you mentioned the back of his head being protected because I was literally just thinking to myself that this guy is silly not wearing eye protection when he clearly has some. 😁 I would definitely admonish him if he came into my ER

    Very nice. Hint: if one was doing a true mortice and tennon timber frame, you would do this process after the braces were cut to finish and add this after. You would omit the pilot holes and set up for hardwood pegs. With that said Its a great detail look.

    Oh James, lol I almost spit my water across the room when you made that comment about Steven's safety glasses. Very funny. A great project that I can certainly utilize around the homestead. I've been thinking of putting a covered entrance to my shop and these braces would make look great. Thanks!

Of course it will require me to add to my router bit collection which I don't mind in the least, but the Mrs. will require a good reason for my purchasing another tool. King's Fine Woodworking Hi James! I’m going to buy some shellac or varnish for a kids table I’m finishing up. It’s my first project. It’s not a masterpiece but my wife is happy with it (happy wife happy life - right!). Anyway, I wanted to do what you’ve asked and buy it through it Amazon so you can get a commission. But I didn’t want to go through a lot of video trying to find what I’m looking for so I thought I’d just ask you. Would you send me the link of some water based finishes that I could use? I want to put a tough finish on top of a painted surface. No rush. Thank you.

    • @KingsFineWoodworking
      @KingsFineWoodworking  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Joe, probably the top of the line water based top coat finish would be this one by General Finishes.
      amzn.to/2Tki21m
      My next favorite, and honestly, the one that I almost always buy is the Varathane water based poly made by Rustoleum. It’s probably 98% as hard & durable, but it dries a bit quicker and it’s 1/2 the price.
      amzn.to/2YTSJrU
      Both of these are 100% non toxic and completely safe around children once they’ve cured.
      I actually used to build kitchen & bath cabinets professionally, and I used the Varathane on every job.
      Anyhow, thank you very much for using our link(s). I appreciate it. And if you have other questions feel free to email me at james@kingsfinewoodworking.com
      Take care,
      ~James

    Nice video, thanks for sharing that with us. I noticed that you made the corners on the template square, but of course the inner corners on the corbels will end up round because of the router bit. If you want you can also make the two outside (middle) corners on the template the same radius as the router bit, so all corners will have the same radius.

    Great video. I noticed you followed the pattern about 98%, If the pattern was to match an existing piece, it would be close but not perfectly correct. On the sharp angles of the pattern your router bit can only get it to a rounded angle, you should have followed up with a triangle rasp and matched the sharp angle of the pattern....

    • @KingsFineWoodworking
      @KingsFineWoodworking  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Gary, great observation! I forgot to mention that. The first sample I took to the customer was routed only, not squared up in those corners.
      We fitted it to show them generally what it looked like in place. But they liked it as it was, and chose not to bring those corners to sharp angles.

    To be honest ,on a framing type application as deck building , no template is needed . cutting them on the bandsaw is good enough.Also it would have been MUCH stronger structurally if the bottom of the corbel was let into a small lip on the upright .

    Small dings and nicks to a template does not mean the template is garbage. Not that much pressure is at the bearing/template contact point. Any number of wood putty to bondo type compounds or veneer cuttings can be used to 'shim' out a template edge.

    No offense meant but, shouldn't have cut those 45 corners. Should've made those as a mortise and tenon joint. Only thing needed for fastening would be a simple 3/4" - 1" dowel pin. Think timber frame style but, for some, would seem too much work to do. Great video, cheers :)

    Is there a specific length/ratio that should be met when creating knee braces? Also, Can they be made so that one leg/side extends further than the other as in a 40/50 or 30/60 angled end cuts?

    • @KingsFineWoodworking
      @KingsFineWoodworking  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Joe, no specific ratio required. In fact the ones on the customer’s house holding up a porch cover were 30/60. But the roof frame line didn’t extend out far. So the braces were taller than wide.
      In this application we switched them to 45/45 to maximize strength for racking resistance in high winds since it is a free standing roof.
