- Today we're exploring a project that lets you chat in Discord servers from the Nintendo Wii, Nintendo DS, and much more!
Note that this is really only a proof of concept, and I'd wouldn't recommend using it with your primary Discord account on a server that you use regularly.

I haven't been working on it for a long time (RiiConnect24 picked up the inactive repo and set up an instance), but there seem to be some interest in it again now so maybe I should work on it again. I could add things like live message updating on browsers that support it and editing messages

This is surprisingly similar to something I have done in the past. I wrote a rust app that manages a couple of different game servers for me, one of which is Minecraft. It is able to use a bot to send messages from the game into the Discord server, and vice versa. The bot doesn't rename itself as it relays messages from every player, but it does include their names in the messages it sends.
I made something similar for my friend's Garry's Mod server. It was written in lua and NodeJS and worked too without webhooks
Reminds me of this minecraft sever called altitude that had something like that.

This is so interesting to me because I made a very very similar personal project, but instead of using a wii I made it so it works with any cmd window. Like, so similar i even had also used the webhooks to bypass user tokens, and a bot. Very cool to see someone separately come up with the same idea and use it for something much cooler than i did!

Gotta be honest, I think seeing it on the DS browser was the most impressive considering so little actually loads on it anymore lol.
i remember as a kid (who was too young to be on discord) whenever my parents took away my shitty chromebook i'd try to use discord through my wii's web browser,, it was 2018 so it didn't work but i would try agian every time my chromebook would get taken,, anyways this is cool as hell it's like 12 year old me living their dream

I was doing once a project that tried to clone discord for older devices. My target was Internet Explorer 5.5 (last working on 95). It used custom own written server and actually javascript and AJAX requests to make it refresh messages and actually work. Made registering, UI and friend to friend messages working before I stopped working on it.
You should make it open source so people can fix it
@@petermmm42 I stopped working on it because of school. When I will be free (from now 1.5 month to the end of this school year) I could continue this. It will be open source but how I said I need some work on it

I like the clever use of the extra lowercase i in Discord's name in this video's thumbnail.
The Wii browser came with a Flash player, but I'm not expecting a Discord client written in Flash (I am expecting a Discord client written in Flash).
The Wii browser is by opera, it came with a flash player but it definitely will not work for todays use.

It would be amazing if they could allow access for us to use the Wii speak on voice channels. Technology is advancing fast, we never know. It’s amazing to see what we have today and to see what the Wii is capable of for modern use.
As technology advances more, the need for better hardware does too, which means Discord could do something that makes whatever chance to get this working impossible...

Sounds like a amazing project. I have bunch of old pocket pc's that I have bought recently, that I could utilize this on. I hope we can do something similar for other sites in the future.

An dos emulator shoud exist on the Wii but i dont know if u could install win 95 or somthing trough that emulator
there is a homebrew port of dosbox that can run windows 95 that micheal did a video on. im assuming if you had an iso image of the games you wanted to play you probably could maybe just not perticually well.

Man... reminds me of the old days, when I used some sort of website on the DS Lite to be able to send messages to my friends on MSN and Google Talk, whenever I had to visit my dad's house.

I was once grounded from my PC, but still wanted to talk to my friends via Discord, which I was highly banned from - so I had to use a lot of different devices to talk to them, but most of them couldn't run Discord..
This would've been really useful back then, but Im ungrounded now and its been a few years now, so..
I got it to work (albeit very slowly) on an old Samsung Galaxy SIII with an outdated app version (idk if that works anymore haven't needed that in a while as I have a much newer backup phone now) as well as an oculus quest 2 where it works just fine in the browser. I also tried on a raspberry pi 3 and Pentium 4 PC neither of which seemed to work
i had a very strong feeling that something like this existed, really cool to see it actually working on most old hardware, "Small edit" i used my Ipod touch 4 on it and it works great.
well, seems like the idea i had like 2 month ago was the right way to do it.

You have no idea how much I wish this was a thing about a year ago because my Nintendo 2ds was the only device I could use to access the internet, save from a school Chromebook that I could only use sometimes so I would have still been able to do the connection part
It's impressive ppl are still making homebrews/mods for the Wii that pretty much a lot of people moved on from

Talking about the X-Band? That things was VERY impressive in the day, but the money it costs to play online was a rip off. My buddy had it and we would play a few matches of Super Street Fighter II online, but when his mom got the bill....simply said "we can't afford this".
@@TheDemoniusX Yeah, dial-up WiFi was most likely expensive as hell back in the day. I wasn't born in the 1990s but after some research and seeing some folks experience high phone bills after using X-Band, yeah that thing was probably a bitch to even use and communicate with other X-Banders.
Being able to get and use Discord on the 3DS was an online life saver, up until some admin dude had requested that I not use the 3DS discord app as it sends far too many 'requests' and bogs down their system. Everyone should keep this in mind when attempting, please do not use it as a real discord communications device.
Also, the one for the Wii was NOT fun without a USB keyboard. XD

One of the first things I did when I got my 3DS was get on the browser and post on Facebook. I thought I was so cool for posting from it.
I got it to work on an old iBook G3 I have acquired. Very cool
I wonder...since this page is displayed basically only in text...could it, in theory, be used in a Text-Only MS-DOS browser? If so, there could be posibillities for an actual MS-DOS Discord App

As long as your old browser can get on the web it should theoretically work. From looking at the source code, there's some Javascript involved but it's only running on the server your browser connecting to. I imagine this would even work on stuff like an old 68K/PowerPC Mac, an Amiga, or a C64 using Contiki.

I use browserve to chat on Discord on my 486 when I'm using it. It's too slow to use on a busy server, but it's fine for sending an occasional DM to whichever friends I'm talking to while I mess about with retro software. That's probably the only way to safely run Discord on vintage hardware. This method is way too risky.
Fun Fact: The shown Discord Account doesn't accept friend requests.
I understand why they did this using a bot because it makes it completely "legal" according to Discord's ToS. And I guess it also means anybody in the server can use it. But it really limits the usefulness when it can only be used in servers that have the bot (what serious server is going to add this bot especially if it requires admin) and you can't read or send DMs, that last part is a big shame since you can't talk to your friends unless you get them all to join the server you made for it and explain to them that you won't be able to see DMs they try to send you or messages in other servers so they have to talk in that specific server.
TBH, this shouldn't require admin. All it needs is read+send message access in every channel (at least the ones you want to be accessble). Giving it admin access gives it automatic access to everything so it makes the setup easier, but it shouldn't be required.
It probably just needs Manage Webhooks and reading and sending, I can't remember if I made it need admin or if that was RiiConnect24, but either way you can manually override the permissions.
I did start on a version that would use your user token but I'm not sure whether the bot would get unverified because of breaking ToS or something like that
It is confirmed compatible with Samsung 3D Blu-ray player and you can also use a phone to set up the bot

Somewhere in the wilderness there is someone with only a Nintendo ds and dial up internet to get online. and this will help them a lot.

I'd be interested to see if a more featured homebrew Discord client for the DS or wii would be possible. If it wasnt just using the web browser, maybe it could use the DS microphone for voice chat.

While I usually 100% approve of projects like this, the fact the developer of the bot was too lazy to figure out the proper scopes and requires you use "Administrator" when inviting the bot is both really bad and really irresponsible. We've seen some big bots get hacked recently, if a bot gets hacked with this permission it can easily nuke a server in seconds.
Please don't use the bot until it's changed, trust me you don't want to risk it.
In the realm of trying to use old tech in a new way, do you have a recommendation for an OS to put on an old desktop? I have a Compaq Presario 5000 and want to try to connect to the internet, but I'm not allowed to with Windows XP and I'm having trouble finding alternatives

I'm pretty sure that there weren't any web browsers for Windows 1.0 and 2.0
Some DOS browsers exists and was made more recently and are 32-bit DOS protected mode programs, but the very first browser for Windows was the Mosaic and need Windows 3.1

I tried it on a few servers I can add bots in, my god is it funny to see a server named after what a specific gender does when presented with ‘material’ on my Nintendo DSi in the year 2023.

Too bad. I was hoping it would be something you ran on a private NAT that basically worked like a client, thus working with any Discord server. The bot route makes it more a novelty for a special Discord channel.
I did start working on a client version but that would be against the ToS which might get the bot unverified or something

It should be noted you don't need to give the bot admin, just needs the relevant permissions
