Radioactive material gets hot because it emits radiation when you put a lot of the thing together it gets hotter and produce more radiation. You pour water there and it turns into vapor that you can use to move a generator. In Chernobyl the thing that was supposed to keep the radioactive material apart so it didn't overheated got broken making the reactor overheat until it exploded
I live in Ukraine and haven't been to this museum. Feel like I missed something special(
