- Most of us adore beach resorts and go to one of the large saltwater bodies at least once a year. However, we shouldn’t forget that the sea is as attractive as it is wayward. We at Bright Side wondered how a person who happened to be in the open sea should behave. It turns out there are several rules that aren’t at all difficult to remember.
Despair is your most dangerous enemy. Don’t give up hope of being saved. There are many stories of people who were found in the open sea months after their disappearance. For instance, 25-year-old sailor Poon Lim, who worked on a British merchant ship, survived alone 133 days in the open sea. After a shipwreck, he managed to find a raft with fresh water, cookies, flares, and a flashlight. Every day, Lim ate only 2 cookies and made 3 sips of water. To avoid muscle atrophy, he even floated around the raft twice a day. As you can see, human possibilities are endless. The main thing is to keep calm and hope for the best.

SUMMARY:
- Panic definitely won’t help you. It can cloud your judgment and make you lose the rhythm of breathing. Therefore, the first thing you should do is to calm down.
- The style of swimming you choose determines how long your strength will last. In calm water, it’s better to swim on your back. If waves splash around you, it’s better to swim on your belly.
- If you’re in the open sea as a result of a shipwreck or an airplane water landing, there must be plenty of things around you that perfectly keep afloat. It will be even better if it’s a boat or a raft with which ships are equipped.
- Remember that open sunlight can be extremely dangerous. So don’t remove your clothes - they’ll protect you from the sun.
- If you have rations, divide them into small daily portions. This will make them last for a long time, and you won’t have problems with digestion.
- Try to fish even if you have stores of food. After all, fish contain some liquid.
- You have to consume the liquid constantly but never drink seawater.
- Try to ensure that you always have a couple of empty containers left for collecting rainwater. According to studies, drinking untreated rainwater is safe for your health.
- • If you found fluorescein, dissolve it in the water when you see an airplane or ship. It forms a bright spot around you which can be easily seen from the air and from afar.

A friend of mine almost drowned bec of rip current. He couldn't get back to shore even though he is a good swimmer. A man with a boat saved him, and later on, he told us, he wasn't supposed to swim to the shore bec that would be swimming against the rip current. He said to swim sideways as far away until outside of the rip current. There's no other way.

Illuminerti Confirmed, Yeah, you could totally find a tarp in the ocean or sea, it's not like they're rare or something. It's not like the ocean is that vast and humongous. I bet you could even find floating boxes of cookies, they're totally not that rare to find.
if you're on a raft you probably have a tarp.heck you could even garb one if you're on a boat that is sinking before it sinks.
I'm not scared of the ocean, what I'm scared of is what's below it.

+[Yoshikage_Kira] maybe not sunburn... I don't know how much protection darker skin provides, but it is important for those with lighter skin. also shade can help prevent overheating, thus helping conserve energy and water.
So, while it's not as necessary if you have darker skin, it's still useful.
though, I will admit, the concept of a tent at sea does sound a little ridiculous😊

A lot of these are for shipwreck or aviation water landing scenarios. I do keep a small mirror tucked in the cup of my bathing suit, in the front zipper of my rash guard, or up the leg of my wetsuit. It's saved my life in some very nasty currents.

Horror Mini Clips that's happened to me while doing research (I'm in marine biology). At this point I just keep a little mirror tucked into the little cup-pocket in my bathing suit top if I wear that, or up the leg of my wetsuit or just inside my rashguard's front zipper if I wear either of those. It's saved my life.
Well, all of this tips depend on one thing: Finding a raft. Otherwise, you'll be dinner for the devilfish.

One of these facts possibly saved my moms and my life! My mom and me, while in Mexico, decided to go jet-skying. While we were far from land, a big wave flipped me. My moms reaction was to come and attempt to save me, but we attempted to get on the side of it and hers flipped too! Now we were stuck in the ocean and my mom was panicking! I remembered this video and attempted to calm her and tell her not to struggle. By this point, she was breathing at a speed that could cause her to go unconscious. I calmed her and did breathing exercises and eventually she was a lot calmer, not completely calm, but enough to think! If she did not do this, she could have gone unconscious. Eventually after 15 minutes, we were saved by the owner of the jet skis. Thanks for the advice!

@@thedoc7169 my life jacket fell off when I hit the water, as I didn't put it on right. my moms was still on, but we were pretty far out, so if she didn't continue swimming, she could go under a wave. It was also in Mexico, and the day we went, there was a jellyfish warning.

@@257darham3 I wasn't out at sea but I was drowning at a water park. So, I used the calm water tip to help me not drown. I can't actually swim but I guess I was so scared that my only option was to try to swim. This video helped me to stay above water and remain calm until I got some assistance basically.

Scotty, When people are told that they are allergic to seafood, it means crab, lobster, shrimp etc not fish. The seafood allergies are caused by the iodine in the seafood, not seafood itself. You cant have a Cat Scan or an xray that is ordered with contrast because the contrast agent itself contains iodine. please inform the technician before you get the injection that you are allergic to contrast. You should take the time to have a medical alert band made up and wear or carry it. in the case of unconsciousness that band is the only way to make medical professionals aware of your contrast allergy. as it could save your life.

PLEASE!!! Don't automatically punch any shark you see nearby!!!!! This can make them aggressive where previously they were only curious. Generally if a shark is coming in to feed you won't see it at all or you'll see it-and maybe some of its mates-swimming patterns around you. If it looks like the shark may be coming in for an attack (circling, making multiple passes, coming up from beneath you rapidly) then kick as soundly as you can at it's snout or gill area. Until then, live and let live

I grew up in a sea port and was taught to respect the sea. Watch for rip tides. Check when high tide. I love the fact this guy is like you will need this and this so you can get that. If your ship wrecked make sure you find the following.....

By being dragged along by currents that are too strong for any swimmer to combat. Being able to swim doesn't have too much to do with it. Near the shore and a bit further away from it there is a backdraft of waves receding along the ocean floor. This water flows back into the ocean and can drag you along. Swimming is also extremely exhausting and can quickly tire you. Coupled with strong currents, you are dead meat. This is why people drown, even if they can swim.

I recently struggled a little too much in a lake and I went under, and I was unconscious. I was thankfully rescued. I hope this video is helpful for me in the future.
