This video is about a landowner in Maryland who had lots of ag crops but very little cover for deer. After four days of hinge cutting and planting switchgrass in 1 year, he went from seeing no mature bucks during the hunting season to attracting and holding multiple 3 and 4 year old bucks.
His property now hunts much better than ever before with more places to hunt.

Couple questions. What trees do you try to hinge and what trees do you avoid hinging? Also, do you ever set fire through an area after you hinge?
Man I would love to have you come to Missouri. I've got 45 acres of woods. And no bucks. I was watching about three or four nice ones over the summer. And they all up and left right before hunting season. I've got between 6-10 doe in my food plot every night, And only young immature bucks tending them. Where are the big boys at?

Not heavy snow, but it usually stands back up after snow melt

I didn’t think deer bedded in switch grass as it got too thick.? Most habitat management people have said it’s about screening to stand locations. I see this isn’t the case
I’ve always been told and is my personal experience that deer typically don’t bed in tall switch with zero visibility to each other. Why is this different?
How long would it take a clear cut of popular and maple mostly soft & some hard to regenerate enough to hold deer? Can u hinge cut popular? 4 to 7 inch diameter size?
Poplar will root sprout very fast if you cut in when dormant. Good cover in 3-5 years. It will not hinge cut successfully. Maple will stump sprout

@@SeeMoreBucks Randy is right on about root sprout on the popular tree. I cut 25 of them along my property line due to farmer complaining about them invading his field. To my surprise they are three times as thick with the sprouts being 3/4"- 1" in diameter and 6' -7' tall. These are all coming off stumps. Have alot of rubs on them sprouts. The initial cut was done two years ago.

Cleaned sticks out of spots for deer to lay down after hinge cutting was done. Leaves will blow back in again which is fine.

I have a property that is super thick but the thickness comes from honeysuckle taking over our woods. Would you say there is a difference between thick areas from honeysuckle and thickness from hinge cuts/ opening the canopy from timbering? I have a brush cutter on order to start knocking out the honeysuckle but that will thus open the woods wide up. Thank you for the help
I think deer prefer hinge cuts done right over honeysuckle. But honeysuckle is also great cover if you can clear paths through it and keep it under control

I have someone hunting the edges of my 5 acre plot that connects to 15 acres of mature pines the pines are a 90 degree buffer that’s the side and back perimeter of my property. I have all the mature bucks in that part of the county moving through that perimeter and hitting my feed plots. I’ve seen more mature bucks there on that 20 acres than any other parcel in my life. And I’ve built farms and cleared land for 15 years. That’s saying something. However this guy is driving his golf cart through access and easement paths all through them woods and even shot a deer 30 yards onto my property and drug it back into the pines and loaded it onto his cart. The property he’s poaching connects to me and he’s probably gonna end up catching a 180grain because them pines are my line of fire. Neither of us know who owns the 15 acres because when I confronted him he asked if I owned it. Started to lie and say I own it all and verbally trespass him because he’s ruining my hunt on my land that my son and I have busted ass building up the past 3 years. I would like to kick his ass truthfully and just might before it’s over but fighting in the woods armed could turn ugly quickly. Any suggestions?
And I wouldn’t piss n the game warden’s mouth if his back teeth were on fire so that’s off the table.
Barbed wire fence. Deer don’t care but it makes people think twice about crossing lines.
