This looks fantastic! I've come to appreciate this generation of Highlander over the past few years, my neighbor has one and every time I look at it, I think it's a pretty good looking vehicle. To me. It looks like a 200 series Land Cruiser from certain angles as well. I'm impressed at the tire you got on this, it's bigger than what I would have thought. The 265/70 17 is what I have on my 4Runner, it's the stock size.
With a lift and the right pair of shoes, a Highlander can look like a badass. I bought a 2009 Highlander Limited in late 2016 for $12,900 (108,000 miles) today it has 122,000 miles and worth as much or more than I paid for it. Synthetic oil change every December. These are 300,000+ mile vehicles.

Great video! I have an 08 highlander I set up for camping and over landing as well. It’s great to see that there is an option for a lift kit because I’ve definatley had some troubles on the trail due to lack of clearance. Just ask my front bumper lol 😂.

Now you have me debating a Highlander. I own a 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee V8 Limited with over 151,000 miles. I'm in my late 30s and have had it since my late 20s. I was a prior 95 Ford XLT owner after the first throwaway car my parents gave me back outta high school 20+ years ago. So an SUV only driver tbh. And by SUV I mean the typical 80s/90s SUV, body on frame, etc. I have been looking into purchasing a new SUV. The GC needs fender and bumper work. Someone ripped off the license on the front a few years back, but I'm in a state without a front plate needed. And about 6 or 7 years prior to that I bumped a small boulder in a parking lot backing out too fast (yeah, a parking lot with a boulder!). Then there's the blend doors screwed up, cruise broken almost since I got it, electrical on entire right side passenger and rear right passenger is out. Probably needs new shocks. It's nearly 20 years old and I didn't take the best care in my late 20s, but it has done me well. I mainly commute with it, but we do have a family farm and I enjoy camping/hiking so I was going to look at another SUV possibly for camping more. I was going to go with the 4Runner. It's last true SUV to me. However, with the rising gas costs, current price of average 4Runner, etc I was looking around. Going to test drive a TRD at my local dealer this weekend. May hop in one of the Highlanders! Never thought about lifting one. Hate the ground clearance of most current SUVs...so low! Thanks! I know the video has nothing to do with purchasing/selecting a vehicle, but definitely perked my interest.
Sounds like that Jeep has served you well! I had a 97 Grand Cherokee for about 12 years, it was a great vehicle. What did it in was the corrosion here in New England. Every time I needed to work on it. Toward the end I'd be breaking bolts and having a hell of a time getting anything apart. When I finally decided to get rid of it, it had holes in the rocker panels and the front end needed a complete rebuild. I sold it to my neighbor who is mechanic and just wanted to fix it up for a cheap winter beater. What did you end up deciding on? 4Runner verse Highlander? I've had a '13 4Runner since 2019, I really like it. The only thing I don't really care too much for is the four liter V6, it is fairly lethargic and you'd probably feel like it's slower than the 4.7 in your Jeep. The great thing about them though is that they're super reliable, I've owned mine for almost 60,000 miles, it has 137K total, and I've had to do nothing to it mechanically in that time. These Highlanders are cool though, if I were to do it over again looking to buy a used vehicle of this age, I would have looked harder at these Highlanders based on how I've used my 4runner. I had all these visions of taking it to Moab and things like that, but I live in Rhode Island, there's no real-wheeling here haha. The Highlander probably makes a more comfy daily driver. I don't know if the fuel economy is any better though, he's mentioned 17 MPG and 14 MPG for this Highlander, I typically get right around 20 MPG with my 4Runner.

What is the actual tire size ? The factory supposed to be 245/55R19, you went little larger , did you use any wheel spacers ? Your video is inspirational , helped me to set up mine recently, with only issue of the 265 tire is too big for my 2011 highlander , went bought a 2 inch wheel spacer to fit them….. 😂. But did not hear you mention the wheel spacers to fit them bigger tires ?
My 1st gen fwd highlander uses Tema 4x4 strut spacers kit with Monroe shocks... remove the front sway bars and it's a little positive chamberd and wheels are aligned at the Toyota dealer...
I want to either lift mine or lower it slightly (can’t leave well enough alone 😂) the lowering would help the mileage, but the lift and tires would hurt it. I get about 19 to work and back (only 4 miles) with 4 stoplights and a short 2 mile section of hwy. loaded with 6 adults I got 22 on twisty 65mph hilly roads. And 22mpg doing nearly 78-80 on the freeway with the AC on max. Edit: mine’s a limited v6 4wd which is the heaviest at 4,500lbs and it has 230,000 miles and heavy BFG AT’s on the factory 19” rims. I also have 1” wheel spacers due to how silly the wheels looked tucked in too far from factory.
Awesome video. I actually picked up this same setup with the kyb strut assembly and anderson lift kit because of your video. I had a question for the rear strut assembly when I place the anderson kit on it , it doesn't sit flush like it does on the front. The screw on the kyb rear strut is longer than the front for some reason. Please let me know if you encountered this. Thanks.
Looks like you have had some time with this change, assuming you still have the vehicle any issues/regrets? does it resolve the issue you had with squatting in back when you tow? Also in general, anyone know of a company that makes modular racks (e.g. sherpa, prinsu, or similar) for highlander? everyone I find online is for the trucks (4runner, tacoma, Landcruiser, etc.). thanks!
My girlfriend and I just picked up a 2018 xle awd. Are the Kybs pretty similar to stock? It’s only got 70k miles on it so I’m not sure if I should replace them or not. We just want a little more clearance nothing crazy.
I'm game...I'd rather do this than buy a new vehicle at today's prices. Just curios why KYBs over Bilsteins? I don't have a preference either way, but I'd like something that could handle some additional weight for light overlanding.

I did not surprisingly. The wheels where a 0mm or standard offset though compared to factory which was a +28mm or something like that, so the wheels were pushed out about 1” inch or 1.25” I can’t remember exactly but it was was helped clear the lower coil seat mount. But there wasn’t any rubbing or scrubbing on the tires in the fenders or anywhere else. i have the same kit on my 2004. ended up having to drill out one hole on the strut so i could use the camber bolds as they were just too big. besides that it went smoothly
I’ve got a 2002 Highlander and the biggest tires we could fit on it without rubbing on the bottom spring isolator on the strut was a 225/75/R16. I was really hoping to get into the 30” range with tires but they would not clear the strut. Trying to figure out what I could do or replace that would give me more clearance on the strut but I’m still at a loss, it doesn’t seem like anyone makes a custom strut for the ‘02. Any advice?
check toyota nation. I believe you can install a 2008+ rear strut assembly which has a higher spring perch. the stock front should have plenty of clearance

What’s the offset of the stock wheels? Basically I’m wondering if the this lift and size tires would work on the stock 17s. Also did it effect ride quality at all? 2 things I see in front you have a tow hook did you make it? If so any instructions And what tires you have is it noisy when driving on highways work on original 19” rims ?
The tow hook is the factory hook that came with my Highlander. It was located in the rear storage bin under the floor board by the back hatch where the tools for the jack are located. The tires are BFG Trail Terrain 265/70R17 and are not noisy at all. Probably the best tire I've ever ran. Thanks for watching.
This video is great1 I ordered the shocks and the kit, but I've heard the coil spacers can cause the electrical wheel alignment to malfunction and mess up traction in sticky situations. Especially on my hybrid with electrical AWD, do you see an issue with using the coil spacers?
With the bigger tyres but smaller wheels, did gain weight? Currently have the stock 19s but thinking of going to a lighter 17 with bigger tyres to keep the rolling diameter close to stock
Yes, the wheel tire package combo weighs 78lbs and although I'm not exactly sure what the stock wheel/tire combo weighs, I can physically tell by lifting the new tire/wheel that they are heavier than stock.
Quick question because I did the same 1.5 lift on my 2008 highlander but replaced my axles because the boots pulled off and it was time anyway. Do you have issues with the cv joints being to short or wobbling upon acceleration?
I just noticed that you can't search by your Highlander's Year, Make, Model to find the 0mm Anthem Vipers. Wish I could but I didn't order mine online. Plus you'll want to order them specifically for your own particular application which may not match my exact application.
Do you think the same tire secs you are running will fit with out rub on my 02 highlander? Id be running the same kit. I dont know if i want to run spacers on it yet.
I have no idea how that tire fit on your gen 1 highlander. I also have a gen 1 highlander I did this exact build on a 2008 highlander and the rear tires don’t fit. They rub and are completely inoperable. Now I have to buy spacers and hope for the best. Btw I bought the exact strut assembles too. Huge waste of money because it’s oem sized so it doesn’t fit.
For starters, the 2007 - 2013 Highlanders are 2nd gen, not 1st gen ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_Highlander#Second_generation_(XU40;_2007) ) And secondly, there is NO way to make a proper assessment as to WHY your tires don't fit without providing, at the very minimum, 1.) tires size, 2.) wheel dimensions (what brand are they? What are the specs? Offset? Backspacing? Width? Diameter? ) Now, with that said, maybe I can point you in the right direction if you can send me that information?! 😉
Well then I have second gen. Either way I have the same specs as this video. Tire size is same as this video. 265/70R-17 COOPER DISCOVERER SNOW CLAW SL And my rims are stock which is 17 X 7.5 So the fact that I have smaller rims should mean I have even more clearance for the struts to fit. Which it doesn’t. They rub hard
Hopefully you can provide more guidance. Because as of right now. I’m sitting here with overpriced tires and struts that don’t fit on my “gen 2” highlander.
@@KyledcflipCa A stock Highlander wheel is a positive +38mm, which means the wheel & tire is sucked in towards the strut 1.5" inches and that is a LOT and enough to allow the tire to contact the bottom of the strut mount. My wheels were a +0mm offset or standard offset so you either need to purchase new wheels with a minimum of +0mm offset OR purchase a set of 1.5" spacers.
That makes sense. It was hard to find this Information because almost anywhere I went to look into lifting a highlander. All the info would be very limited to non. I guess I picked the wrong vehicle to lift. Either way thank you so much for your help. I’ll just get wheel spacers. Would hate to send back the strut assemblies.
Have you had an alignment performed yet? Might solve the issue. I have about a 1/2" inch of clearance between the bottom of the strut and the top of the tire.
The rear of this kit does not fit the 2002 and the like highlander , without modification of the spacer itself , the holes do not line up at all and need to be tooled to fit the studs on the struts , the welded on bolts are not the proper size and must be cut off and correct ones need to be welded in place or the holes in the fender wells could be enlarged but then there is no going back , why bother powder coating a crappy part that took almost six weeks to get . I can take care of it but I feel bad for anyone who expect it to bolt right in . Not too happy .

The only thing my ‘12 v6 4x4 is missing is a low range, lockable diffs would be nice too, but apparently it uses brake force to limit slip already.

I ended up keeping the spare in the roof rack as it won’t fit underneath in its factory designated location.

i have the same kit on my 2004. ended up having to drill out one hole on the strut so i could use the camber bolds as they were just too big. besides that it went smoothly

I’ve got a 2002 Highlander and the biggest tires we could fit on it without rubbing on the bottom spring isolator on the strut was a 225/75/R16. I was really hoping to get into the 30” range with tires but they would not clear the strut. Trying to figure out what I could do or replace that would give me more clearance on the strut but I’m still at a loss, it doesn’t seem like anyone makes a custom strut for the ‘02. Any advice?
check toyota nation. I believe you can install a 2008+ rear strut assembly which has a higher spring perch. the stock front should have plenty of clearance

What’s the offset of the stock wheels? Basically I’m wondering if the this lift and size tires would work on the stock 17s. Also did it effect ride quality at all? The tow hook is the factory hook that came with my Highlander. It was located in the rear storage bin under the floor board by the back hatch where the tools for the jack are located.
The tires are BFG Trail Terrain 265/70R17 and are not noisy at all. Probably the best tire I've ever ran.

This video is great1 I ordered the shocks and the kit, but I've heard the coil spacers can cause the electrical wheel alignment to malfunction and mess up traction in sticky situations. Especially on my hybrid with electrical AWD, do you see an issue with using the coil spacers?

With the bigger tyres but smaller wheels, did gain weight? Currently have the stock 19s but thinking of going to a lighter 17 with bigger tyres to keep the rolling diameter close to stock
Yes, the wheel tire package combo weighs 78lbs and although I'm not exactly sure what the stock wheel/tire combo weighs, I can physically tell by lifting the new tire/wheel that they are heavier than stock.

Quick question because I did the same 1.5 lift on my 2008 highlander but replaced my axles because the boots pulled off and it was time anyway. Do you have issues with the cv joints being to short or wobbling upon acceleration?
I didn't have any CV axle shafts issues at all with the setup I had.

I just noticed that you can't search by your Highlander's Year, Make, Model to find the 0mm Anthem Vipers. I have no idea how that tire fit on your gen 1 highlander. I also have a gen 1 highlander I did this exact build on a 2008 highlander and the rear tires don’t fit. They rub and are completely inoperable. Now I have to buy spacers and hope for the best. Btw I bought the exact strut assembles too. Huge waste of money because it’s oem sized so it doesn’t fit.
For starters, the 2007 - 2013 Highlanders are 2nd gen, not 1st gen ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_Highlander#Second_generation_(XU40;_2007) ) And secondly, there is
NO way to make a proper assessment as to WHY your tires don't fit without providing, at the very minimum, 1.) tires size, 2.) wheel dimensions (what brand are they? What are the specs? Offset? Backspacing? Width? Diameter? ) Now, with that said, maybe I can point you in the right direction if you can send me that information?! 😉
Well then I have second gen. Either way I have the same specs as this video. Tire size is same as this video.

So the fact that I have smaller rims should mean I have even more clearance for the struts to fit. Which it doesn’t. They rub hard
Hopefully you can provide more guidance. Because as of right now. I’m sitting here with overpriced tires and struts that don’t fit on my “gen 2” highlander.
@@KyledcflipCa A stock Highlander wheel is a positive +38mm, which means the wheel & tire is sucked in towards the strut 1.5" inches and that is a LOT and enough to allow the tire to contact the bottom of the strut mount. My wheels were a +0mm offset or standard offset so you either need to purchase new wheels with a minimum of +0mm offset OR purchase a set of 1.5" spacers.
That makes sense. It was hard to find this Information because almost anywhere I went to look into lifting a highlander. All the info would be very limited to non. I guess I picked the wrong vehicle to lift. Either way thank you so much for your help. I’ll just get wheel spacers. Would hate to send back the strut assemblies.

How much tire clearance do you have from your rear struts? I just finished a similar setup and an rubbing pretty bad on one side.
Have you had an alignment performed yet? Might solve the issue. I have about a 1/2" inch of clearance between the bottom of the strut and the top of the tire.
The rear of this kit does not fit the 2002 and the like highlander , without modification of the spacer itself , the holes do not line up at all and need to be tooled to fit the studs on the struts , the welded on bolts are not the proper size and must be cut off and correct ones need to be welded in place or the holes in the fender wells could be enlarged but then there is no going back , why bother powder coating a crappy part that took almost six weeks to get . I can take care of it but I feel bad for anyone who expect it to bolt right in . Not too happy .
