the harshest thing about northern Greenland isn't its winters (that are significantly milder than those of Siberia in fact) but it's extremely cool summers. average summer temperatures are somewhere around 0 degrees. that's why there's virtually no plant life in northern Greenland. Siberia is very green and lush because the summers get 30+ degrees on a regular basis.
Speaking about Siberia, what's always overlooked is that temperatures are not everything. It could be -50 in the central Syberia but it's VERY dry and shielded from winds. While on Chukchi peninsula, insane winds and humidity make the "mere" -20 unbearable. That's why Central Syberia boasts with civilisation, and Chukotka has hardly any residents. Also, it's Chukotka, not the "-50 areas", that is considered the harshest place in Russia itself. So speaking about inhospitable Syberia, it's more correct to mention Chukotka, not -50. Because Chukotka doesn't have -50 but still, it's one of the harshest places where ppl permanently live. So harsh that ppl barely know about its existence, which is proven by many videos like this one. Even the opposite Alaska is a bit better, by the way.
I love these types of videos where you covered tempratures. Climates, also ur previous videos. Keep making them ❤. Also bandar-e mashahr in Iran deserves an honourable mention as in Summers it's the only place to witness 40+°C and high humidity making its heat index in 50s all the time!
Is it weird that I’ve always wanted to travel to Norrhern Greenland/Greenland in general? Most people I know call me crazy and shit I probably am. But the thought of setting foot where very few humans have before and seeing sights that very few human eyes have seen is so enchanting to me. Would just have to go very well prepared and make sure I don’t become polar bear food.
As Iranian, mentioning Lut desert made me happy because always when is speaking about very hot desert people think about death valley 🇺🇲 while Lut is almost as hot as there (if not hotter)
I suppose the list can be summarised as "Where is it too hot, cold or dry to be able to live?" The extreme rainfalls due to the monsoon does not prevent people from making a living. However, there could be a few another cathegories not mentioned: Where the volcanic activity is so high that it is unsafe to try to live there, e.g. internal Iceland, and very mountainous islands with no harbour, like most of the Pitcairn Islands.
Its why i think Mars and Moon colonies can only fail over time . Its not like we practice here on Earth , we avoid hostile places where at all possible . Everyone staying ,at say the Antarctic research stations ,say its awful .
The Danakil Depression in Ethiopia looks like Mammoth Hot Springs in Yellowstone on steroids. Mammoth is one of the coolest things I've ever seen. Danakil looks more amazing. Maybe I'll go in the next life.
You use celsius but why the weird inch? When I heard 476 inches of rain it took a while to convert to a human scale. How many feet is it? How many yards or meters? Something like 12,000 mm is the accepted measurement 😏. Then people can think 12 meters.
@@Iamtheliquor So there are more countries that are not 100% in metric system. I thought US, Liberia and some other obscure country were the only 3 left.

The Danakil depression is 200,000 km squared? Hardly! Thats about 80 times greater than the surface area of the Earth. Please learn the difference. A kilometre squared is a completely different unit to a square kilometre, except for 1 of each.
I've never heard anybody make that difference and most people I know in physics and construction and data analysis use them interchangeably. There's no need to be so toxically pedantic. You try to keep pointing it out in the comments but it is a distinction you seem to have made up and care too much about. Go outside and touch some grass and look after yourself.
Recommendation: Please provide temperatures in Fahrenheit, also. Conversion from Celsius takes two steps versus just one step for all other measurements.
God I really wish this guy would give american measurements along with metric ones. "Temperatures can reach 50 degrees celsius" Me: Ok so that's 50*9/5 +32...😵💫
I'd love to see a part 2 for most inhospitable places on Earth e.g. Svalbard, Alaska, Australian Outback, The Himalayas, Kalahari Desert etc.
La Rinconada, Peru
chukchi peninsula is much more inhospitable than alaska. just look at the permafrost map to see it with your own eyes.
Look at Edimburg of the seven seas
@@erynn9968 not to mention the political inhospitality
alaska is a tropical paradise

There are no permanent settlements in the mountains where elevation is more than 5000 meters. Himalayas, Andes etc. that covers a huge land area.
Maybe not in the Himalayas but I know "la rinconada" in Peru which is a town over 5k meters above sea level
One could argue that the Everest base camps are becoming permanent settlements....
