  • Part 2.
    I suggest you watch part one first. It'll give you background and reasons why I'm spending so much time (and effort)
    If you are not a patient person then this one is not for you...
    But also if you clicked on the link then you probably do need to watch.. However, have more patience.
    All I can say is watch and grow.
    Good luck with your chisels

    Omg thank you so much. I was about to go crazy thinking I was the only one who wanted to flatten the entire back. I have been searching on and off for few days now while flattening a new set of chisels. My OCD won't allow me to truly enjoy my chisels if the back doesn't look uniform and shiny, but the only videos i saw just did half way and left too many scratches. I was about to give up today because of how long it's been taking. This was my last low effort search title with "flatten chisel" and you were the top video. I really appreciate this because i know how long this takes and it has given me enough motivation to finish what I've started. Thanks

    Ohh my hands and back are hurting after just watching these two video's. Lapping the whole back of the chisel is dedication 👏
    Nice stones 👌 ive been using the naniwa splash and go stones for a couple of years now. Sharpening has definitely come along way over the years, still labour intensive though!

      It's quite nice being on my own and getting things from here and there and being able to bend and flex, and not knock anything over

    Hi Jamie, I have seen most of your videos and really enjoy them.
    I've read all the comments and am surprised there's such a fuss about how to flatten and sharpen a chisel! We all have our own ways and our own ideas of what flat really means and how important it is.
    I worked as a machinist for an optical firm so flat meant something and could be quantified down to the micron. I have also been a woodworker (hobbyist) for decades. There is nothing in woodworking that comes close to flat. It's all a matter of degree, do we need flat to a micron to cut wood no. That was a hard lesson for me to absorb. I even tried surface grinding plane irons to achieve a truly flat surface, a complete waste of time.
    I now flatten my chisels and plane irons on a diamond stone for rough grinding and hone on a medium oil stone then strop. As long as the first 1/2" of the blade is flat that's all I need as long as the rest of the back is hollow. Subsequent sharpening will continue to flatten the back as the burr is removed. Flattening the back of a new to me chisel usually takes from 1/2 to one hour depending on the state of the thing.
    I'm sure my chisels and plane irons could be sharper and flatter but my old hands won't abide by hours of rubbing tools on stones so I just re-sharpen more often and my tools cut just fine.
    All that said I think we should all do what we like and how we like to do it. Those chisels were beautiful when you finished them I really admire the work you put into them excellent job! I wouldn't do that but I don't think you're nuts for spending time to achieve a result you want, after all if speed is the goal why bother with chisels and planes at all? Do everything on a CNC machine and don't bother with hand work.
    My woodworking friends think I'm nuts using hand tools but I enjoy it and can't imagine working wood without them. I think your critic is just plane rude to start a pissing contest on which way one should flatten and sharpen a chisel of all things. Let's lighten up and enjoy life it's too short. Best wishes Gene.

    Hi. If you want to comment on here then please do. If it's more of a critique. Then please mention time and quote the part you're not happy with or agreeing with.
    Probably better to watch part 1 first, to get an understanding of what I'm trying to achieve here with this set of chisels.
    Thanks

    Just shorten the blade on a sandstone wheel to get rid of the dud corner . Saves grinding the whole blade thickness . For the back I use a rotary (hand turned )abrasive grit disc .It`s for picture framers really .That gets the back flat quicker than the diamond plate (which I use as well ,later } I have been doing all my chisels this weekend .If you buy old used chisels the backs are seldom flat due to use as scrapers on rusty metal .

    • @twcmaker
      @twcmaker  ปีที่แล้ว

      .. And take years off the lifetime of the blade. That's a good option. Thank you. I'll think about that.

    I queried the cloudiness left by my "high" grit Chinese synthetics also. I've been chatting to a guy that did some research on them and he basically discovered that many of these cheap Chinese stones marked as being any higher than 2000 JIS are actually a complete lie! It seems anything lower than that can be relatively close to it's supposed grit but, by and large, anything marked with a higher grit will likely be firmly in the 2000 range regardless of it's labelling. Interesting stuff.

      Oh right 🙈 so the 15k (cheap) stone I bought is bs?
      I'll have to try it.

    • @jammywesty91

      @@twcmaker I'm sure there could definitely be outliers but he seemed to have had a quite extensive approach. He did state however that there are natural Chinese stones that are legit but to make sure you get them from a reputable seller. I suppose only way to tell is to see if the polish becomes duller after using your 10,000 Sun Tiger.

    • @twcmaker
      @twcmaker  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Ahh. But then you can 'over clean' your stone with the Nagura. If you let the stone 'clog-up' with slurry, you get a black area. This highly polishes the metal. So don't be too clinical about it.

    Hi Jamie, great videos, really simple to understand. Just one question, can you share some details on the ‘cheap’ stone you have. Valid point about wear & tear on something cheap. I’ve got a set of new chisels to flatten.
    Thanks!

      @@twcmaker thanks Jamie, the stone I was referring to was the one in your chisel restoration part 2. However I’ve just watched the first video in your play list - ‘budget 10k water stone……’, so even more interested in your recommendations. I’ve recently purchased a decent 300/1000 grit diamond stone and a Shapton 16k ceramic stone. I use these for day to day chisel and plane iron maintenance. I also recently purchased a 4k/8k diamond stone as I have a new set of chisels that need the backs flattening. I’m not at all happy with the 4k/8k diamond stone, so looking for something to use between 1k & 16k. I’m happy to invest in quality, but given anything I buy to sit between 1k & 16k won’t get much use I’d prefer not to spend unnecessarily.
      Really appreciate any advice.
      Thanks, Frank.

      @twcmaker  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Frank. I think you've got all you need. The 4k and 8k stones (in my opinion) are a waste of money. The rough stones for 25° and then the 10 or 15k for 30°
      If backs are really out of sorts. Then a 180 or 200 grit diamond will save hours.

    I'm a complete beginner. I've watched so many videos on sharpening chisels and getting the back flat but I find none of them definitive enough. The youtuber will usually pass the chisel over various stones and then say 'there, that's now completely flat'. What do I look for in my own chisel that will let me know it is completely flat? Does it have to be as mirror-like as possible or is there some other way to tell? Whenever I actually use my chisels they quickly lose any sharpness and the tips are always very ragged. Can anyone help as I feel unable to make any significant progress due to my lack of understanding.
