      The inquisitor actor has been the bad guy ever since the 80's. This reminds me or Cloud Atlas. If you are talking about things like ancient almost atlantean secrets, well look how crazy the world is today but this is only the present day. And considering we always find some crazy new thing that rewrites history on like matrix levels... Saw this movie over 10 times and still don't get it lol. But even if I don't get it or agree with whatever it is this film is about, I could still watch it over and over again just to enjoy the ride.

    The genius of all involved to make you so invested in the fragmented story and characters in a a relatively short film length, and to bring it all together in such a satisfying, bittersweet way. A true gift, all wrapped up in the bow of Clint Mansell's sublime score. Perfect.

    Interestingly, Aronofsky was trying to make this movie for years. It originally had Brad Pitt attached as Tommy but in order to make it they had to drop the budget, and thus Brad. I cannot imagine anyone doing better with those broken emotional scenes than Hugh though. Absolutely the emotional core of the film.

  • @danhornstein6907
    @danhornstein6907 3 ปีที่แล้ว +50

    I've always seen it as the "past" scenes are the book she's writing/he finishes. The scenes in the present are reality. The "future" scenes are his psyche finally coming to terms with mortality.

    • @S.G.W.C.
      @S.G.W.C. 3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      it is said the future scenes are also reality just in the far future. Aronofsky has confirmed the bubble is a space ship but he didn't want it to look like your typical space ship. and Hugh's character is still alive cuz in the present he found the tree of life during his research which extended his life. also you know it's the same Chace cuz the pen she gifted him is the same one in the future space ship he's tattooing himself with its just rlly cracked

    • @Shaggit
      @Shaggit 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@S.G.W.C. I always interpreted it as Dan said. That the future scenes are him overcoming his guilt and accepting loss and finally finishing the book gifted. It seems weird to me that only one of those realities would be a reimagining with the future being real as well as the present. There is no right answer with this movie. It's up to the viewer to decide.

    • @Myst031
      @Myst031 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    • @JoshuaDay0550
      @JoshuaDay0550 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      thats exactly how i took it. The future was him coming to terms with death and finishing the book. Accepting death. And the end shows him planting the seed on her grave, expressing that he has come to terms with death. Others think that he found the tree of life and some how the tree was also his wife but that doesnt make sense. the tree cant be both.

    I love this movie because I chose to take the future scene as reality. I find it fascinating, that everybody talks about love lasting forever and everybody swears to not give up until the end of time - and this guy really took it literally. I love the idea that he really found a way to extend his life and her (tree) life for thousands of years, that he really goes to the literal edge of the universe in search of eternal life, until he finally realizes what her novel meant and that love cannot be eternal and that he has to let go. The soundtrack was epic and did a great job of elevating the drama and emotion of a scene. Hugh Jackman was a rock throughout and Rachael Weiz was the perfect counter to his character. She brought a much needed softness to the movie. Definitely a picture that you could easily watch a 2nd time soon after. You should read the graphic novel, really good.

    Woah! This is my favorite movie of all time and I never thought anyone would ever review it. To me this is a work of art and more about the emotion it evokes rather than a straight storyline. Best Soundtrack ever!
    People have different interpretations of what happened. Which storyline is real. To me the present and future Tommy are real and the same person. He refuses to let Izzy die and is trying to bring her back from death. Izzy wants Tommy to finish the last chapter as a way to cope with her death and let her go. He refuses why he is haunted by her word of “finish it”. He wants to bring her back, but at the end he realizes that he is the one that has to die, that in death he will be reunited with her and thus finishes the last chapter, let’s her go in this world, dies and is reunited with her in the afterlife. “Death is the road to awe!”

The treatment worked to reverse aging so he lived for thousands of years until technology made it so he could travel space with the tree that Izzy grew into. Having lived almost forever, a fitting way to go out is to literally go to the dying star Izzy talked about. Poetic that he made it just as it supernova’d.

    This has been my favorite movie since it came out Back in 2006. This movie spoke to my very soul. Tragically my own wife died of cancer 2 years ago at 36 years old. I haven’t watched this movie since she became ill 5 years ago and I don’t think I’ll ever be able to watch my favorite movie ever again.

    What a lot of people miss is that spirituality is a mindset. If you exist in that mindset, 'reality' only plays out the spiritual undercurrent. You can 'read' that undercurrent; you can predict its movement/development as if it's a brook or poetry.
    I don't know if what I just wrote made sense to you, but it does to me.
    This film is absolutely a work of art, a spiritual expression, a walk between dimensions. It seems in places like it's depicting reality, but it's all metaphor. The think about spirituality is that you can't get stuck on appearances or on definitions. When you view life/reality with a spiritual eye, you just have to let it happen. You can't force it with expectation; you can't try to MAKE IT fit the story you want, only reveal itself as the story you're ready for at the moment. When you return to this, it won't be the same experience; it will affect you a different way and teach you something different. True art does that; true art is spiritual. True art is a pure communication form.
    I like that YOU liked being tossed in the deep end like that. I like that you recognized you were being tossed in the deep end and that you were patient enough to let it do its thing in its own time. That's a spiritual instinct. That's a recognition of Art. Your reaction (let it just flow) was impressive.
    There are so many ways to interpret this film. None of them are the real story; all of them are part of the story. Logic tends to get attached to its own structure. You can rationalize anything and arrive at any meaning you like without necessarily being correct. You can come up with a story that lays out what you think the logic of this movie is, but the tendency is to fall in love with the structure you come up with, which actually takes you away from what this film is really about, what it's showing, what it's saying.
    I love that the film tells a 'story' running it through these 2 people across cultures & time & roles. What depicted is real? What is visual metaphor? Is it linear, circular, spiral, interweaving? I don't know. But it is compelling. It speaks to me, but I can't articulate what it says to me.

    I have listened to the score of this film more than any other album ever, I love it. The track "Together we will live forever" is probably the single most beautiful piece of music I've ever heard.
    The "space" shots were done practically, using macro lenses to shoot organic and chemical reactions at the microscopic level.

  • @shaithis77

    When I first saw this film, I came up with a complex explanation of the symbolism of the 3 different time lines, and how it really represents one person’s internal struggle with the past failures, present dilemma, and future potential. Then I watched the commentary, and Aronofsky is basically just like “yeah, the story is very literal. Don’t think much into it beyond that.” Haha oh well…

    • @MrVvulf
      @MrVvulf 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The word literal might have been a hint, alluding to literature (after all, Izzy was writing a book).
      "Don't think much into it beyond that" pointing out that it's all laid out, transpiring as chapters in a book.
      The first timeline is created by Izzy in her book.
      The second timeline is her and Tom's life in the present.
      The final timeline is Tom's writing as he finishes the last chapter of Izzy's book, wistful and poignant, and still dreaming of a way to save Izzy, while transporting her to the nebula which Izzy described to Tom on their rooftop that winter night - Xibalba.
      At least that's my take.

    I watched this movie going in blind while my boyfriend was diagnosed with cancer and was interred in the hospital for months and was hard to spend time with him at the time. Watched it by myself… wow… was I blubbering like a baby. I had no idea at the time if he would make it and wasn’t ready to lose him (whoever is?). Thank God he is cured now. I always was fascinated with space, the cosmos and before he got cancer we would drive up to the mountains to watch the stars together and talk for hours. After he entered remission, he gifted me a giant telescope so I can always see the stars and moon. I still have it and whenever I look at it, it reminds me of him.This movie hit home back in 2014.
    *On a side note, if you want to watch a visual/cosmos film watch ‘Sunshine’

    I'm not entirely sure how I ended up discovering this movie, but it was shortly after I'd gotten my first HDTV and bluray player (PS3) and was just willy-nilly ordering blurays from netflix that seemed cool. I was absolutely blown away by the artistry of this movie. The story, acting, directing, cinematography, soundtrack, editing, etc, etc. all work seemlessly together. Calling it a masterpiece would be selling it short. I would say that this is the movie equivalent of an epic poem.

    I haven't seen this film in awhile, but from I remember, the triple narrative goes like this: The conquistador storyline is Izzy's book which she never finished. The modern portion is Tom in the real world trying desperately to save his wife. The future tale of him in the space bubble is Tom's contribution to his wife's novel. It also is a metaphor for his inability to let her go - he's willing to travel untold years to the stars to insure her remains are reborn in the nebula/star system.
