YEES YESYESYES i love this movie so much I'm so happy you've seen it!! :D I love how this movie navigates through a spectrum of grey areas when it comes to situations and characters, like how Dick is not a good person just because he's the victim? He cheated on Marge regularly and was superficial person who took on "new projects" when they amused him (like Tom or the italian girl he impregnated) and then promptly discarded them when they stopped being entertaining to him, with no regard to their feelings. He already had a history of violence towards people that almost proved fatal for the other person, which leads you to wonder.. if Tom WASN'T a sociopath capable of killing.. would Dick have killed Tom on that boat? Cause yes, Tom hit Dick first, but Dick was the one who responded with murderous violence after. If Tom hadn't fought back, perhaps the story would've been about how Dick killed Tom on that boat and sunk his body in the sea. And he probably would've gotten away with it, considering nobody really knew Tom and Dickie's parents probably would've helped cover it up just to prevent a scandal from sullying the Greenleaf name. And that's another thing! The commentary on how upper class people tend to care more about preserving reputation and names than actual human life or justice being made (even for their own kin!) is brilliantly portrayed in how ready they are to dispose of any leads to Dickie's murder just to have it over and done with. And lastly.. I feel very bad for Peter. I truly think that him being in love with Tom is what clouded his judgement and kept him from seeing all the red flags until it was too late (which is.. kind of a terrifying throught to me, tbh. the idea that you could fall in love with someone so hard, it could keep you from seeing they are a monster? *shivers*). I think him and Marge are the only two people you could consider "good" in this whole film, and maybe that's why they're the two that get screwed over the most?
I think the tragic karma in this movie is that Tom is a compulsive liar because he thinks of himself as a nobody and he hates his life, and he will do anything to be anybody else.. then he meets Peter. And he loves him for EXACTLY who he truly is, and all the things he considered were faults: his personality, his music taste, his sensitivity, all of it. He embraces everything that Tom is, he reciprocates his feelings. But by the time Tom meets him, it's too late. He's already fucked over his life so much, that he has no choice but to kill the one person who truly saw him and loved him and kill his one shot at happiness, cursed to continue pretending for the rest of his life. I think it's a good lesson to learn, tbh. That you should never pretend to be someone you're not just to fit in with people that don't understand you, because then you're sacrificing the opportunity of Your People to find you. Even if it takes a long time, it happens, but you gotta be patient and strong. And it feels so much better too, because it's effortless! Whereas with the other people you gotta be constantly putting on a mask, and what kind of life is that?
JAMES PLEASE DON'T BLOCK ME I'M BEGGING I JUST HAVE A LOT OF FEELINGS ABOUT THIS MOVIE :(( I'M SORRY!!

LMFAO IM NOT BLOCKING YOU. Hahahaha.
This was truly a great read and honestly a brilliant deep dive into this film. The idea of Dickie reciprocating his love for Tom even during his meltdown with him is genius. It’s genuine. Tom doesn’t know what that even is..and he kills him just like you said.
To build..when Marg sees Tom naked and is horrified. I find that scene so incredible and I caught it during editing. She’s sees Tom for what he truly is…not human. In that scene he’s naked, with no layer around him. Completely exposed. She witnesses what he truly is..and is horrified. I don’t know, something I found to be worth analyzing!

@@JamesVSCinema oh my god you're RIGHT! I had never caught the symbolism of that scene with Marge but it's so true!! I also think it's brilliant how Marge seemed to sense something was off about Tom BEFORE she found the rings?? like something just didnt quite feel right and then BAM she finds the rings and she's able to see him for what he is, and once she catches a glimpse of Tom's true self, she is immune to his BS. It's so frustrating that everybody disregards her as a hysterical female looking for someone to blame when she's the one person who knows what's up!! The only person who immediatly sniffed out Tom was Freddy, and he was the most dislikeable person in the whole movie lmao he's such a scumbag but HE WAS ONTO TOM FROM THE BEGINNING!! And that's what i mean with playing with greys with every character. Do i want Tom to get found out? Absolutely. Do I hate Fred? Absolutely. Do i feel bad that Tom killed Fred? Probably not as much as I should've considering he was trying to uncover the truth!! I hate but i love this movie UGHHH

@@cherizar1854 Totally agree. I love this movie. After The English Patient (which I love), I was very interested in the next works of Anthony Minguella, and when I saw this movie I fell in love with it instantly. Tom Ripley's character is so fascinating on so many levels, and the movie does a great job of getting you inside his head. Get you to empathize and feel sorry for someone so dark, but whose radical acts you end up understanding in the context of loneliness and lack of identity. Even the sexual ambiguity goes in line with his lack of self-definition.
I love those intimate moments of the character observing others, studying them but also vampirizing them to feed his inner emptiness, like when Dickie and Marge have sex on the boat and he acts like a voyeaur. The last shot closing the door and leaving the character condemned to not find himself, trapped in a lie, may be one of my favorite and most elegant endings.
I should read Patricia Highsmith novels about the character.

But who realized too late that Ripley was not harmless. That was Freddie's huge problem--he thought so very highly of himself that he didn't quite pick up on how creepy and dangerous this dude was. I also got the vibes that Freddie was homosexual too and he let his guard down with Ripley because Ripley was good-looking...

@tteokbokkibxtch I have watched it last night for the very first time and the scene that you mentioned is extraordinary. In my top 3 for sure in this movie. I don't know if you had the same impression I had, but at a certain point in the confrontation between Freddie and Tom, the camera stops on Ripley's face and I could almost see a surprising transfiguration. I don't know how they did it but it looks like it was probably Matt Damon in a transfiguration that I've never seen in a movie. Written all over Tom Ripley's face is the hidden face of evil, a deep hatred he is feeling that anyone would dare to find out what he's done to Dickie. Freddie is an extraordinary character. Update: saw the French version of the film. Seymour portrait of Freddie has much more quality than the one in the French rendition, Purple Noon. Although the ending scene is far better in Purple Noon.

Great comparison to Nightcrawler James. If anything I’ve always believed Matt Damon’s Tom Ripley to be just as creepy if not more so than Gyllenhaal’s Lou Bloom, specifically because Ripley is so unassuming, whereas Jake Gyllenhaal was more obviously creepy. Damon’s performance as Ripley makes you feel some sort of sympathy at points, which is the same trick he pulls on characters in the movie

This movie makes Italy look like heaven on earth. And the three main actors are all glowingly gorgeous. The absolute prime of their prime. This movie is the closest thing to Hitchcock outside of Hitchcock.
I recall showing this to a friend years ago, and it made him so uncomfortable he had to leave the room. I think many of us know a “Dickie” and/or a “Tom” in our real lives, and it makes the movie hit so close to home. Murder hopefully isn’t ever involved, but we all KNOW people like this. Or maybe WE are a Dickie or Tom.

For me, this is one of the underappreciated truly GREAT films of the last few decades. One of the things it's about is the urge to "belong" somewhere, and what a person might do to make that happen. Tom wants it so badly, and when he's welcomed into Dickie and Marge's world (even being specially singled out at the jazz club) it's a dream come true, and then when he's ejected from the inner circle, it's unbearable for him, and he starts doing terrible things. (The book is very different about all this, so it's an interesting study in terms of adaptation and reimagining.) As someone who has once or twice been accepted into that kind of "golden circle" by someone charismatic, and then made to feel like an outsider when they got bored... I can relate all too well. (I never killed anybody though! :) )
This was the movie that made me revise my opinion of Matt Damon 100%. When I was first aware of him in movies, I got the impression that he was "this year's semi-cute guy whom Hollywood decided to promote as a Star for no special reason." But this performance proved that he's a truly great actor; his performance can be studied again and again.
Which reminds me: As someone interested in the process of filmmaking, you would definitely get a lot out of the director's commentary on the DVD of this movie. It's the best I know, in terms of really getting into the thinking and process behind making the film, in considerable detail but always interestingly. It's like a complete film course.

Interesting how you say that by the end he hasn’t changed. I’ve never given that much thought. I’d say that by the end Ripley has changed in the since that he now has full confidence in his abilities to get what he wants. Also in the very last scene of the movie I think he knows that it will be impossible for him to ever truly connect with anyone on an authentic level, whereas before he probably still had hopes.

And then it comes to a head on the boat: "No, I don't love you, Tom. I'm actually glad you're going" etc. And Tom's delusion comes crashing down. Ugh. Brutally uncomfortable to watch but so well executed.

There have been several actors who have played Patricia Highsmith's best known psychopath: Dennis Hopper, John Malkovich and of course Damon. But the first try at the character is a 60s era French movie called Plein Soleil, with the impossibly handsome Alain Delon in the role. It's definitely worth a watch as it was made at a time when, in movies rather than novels at least, the bad guy wasn't supposed to get away with it. So how did they get around the problem ending? Rather cleverly IMO!

  • @gluuuuue
    @gluuuuue 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Oh, this film's story was pretty wild when it came out, and really stands the test of time, I think. And it's based on a book written in the *'50s*. But yeah, in addition to young Matt Damon, also got young Jude Law, Gwyneth Paltrow, Cate Blanchett, and Philip Seymour Hoffman? That'd be a star-studded cast *today*, and get to see them 20 years ago establishing themselves with these performances? Whew.. And it's one of those stories and plots that's sold by the performances, because if the viewer doesn't believe Damon's ability and the effect it has on all the other characters who keep buying into his performance, you wouldn't believe the story. Instead, the thing you don't believe is the circumstances and random "fortune" Ripley keeps finding himself in. But you never doubt he's capable of what he does, which is what's terrifying.

Dickie is upper class, but Tom is not--he was a scholarship student, so is familiar with the culture but also resentful of it. When I saw saw this film on release, I had seen 'Purple Noon' on its big-screen 30th-anniversary re-release but not read the novels. I immediately bought all six, read them, and loved them. Tom never really intends to be bad; but, you know, stuff happens and his instinct is self-preservation, and he always somehow fails upwards. As someone else mentioned, John Malkovich plays an older Tom in 'Ripley's Game', which is based on the third novel. I wish someone would adapt the fourth novel, 'The Boy Who Followed Ripley', as a film. It's considered a weaker book in the series, but it's still interesting as Tom meets a teenager with whom he shares many qualities, who is also not who he seems to be, and once again despite Tom desperately trying to have good intentions there are some tragic results.
