A friendly grizzly bear visit while hiking off-trail - Yellowstone National Park

  • I was sitting in the rain under my poncho just kinda gazing off into the distance while resting under a tree when I took a look to my left. I immediately saw a grizzly walking towards me. I was not very visible to the bear because I was under my poncho but the grizzly finally spotted me from the movement I was making while going after my bear spay and then my camera. You are never suppose to get within 100 yards of bears in the park but with close surprise encounters you have no choice and at that point you have to do the right thing. As most people know, my thinking is to never do anything that can upset a grizzly. So I moved away at the opportune time. It turned out to be another great experience in the backcountry of Yellowstone.

    Thank for this, Stan. It felt like I was there walking through Yellowstone with you. To be the only human in sight must be a different kind of alone-ness, and peaceful. Nature's landscape and its creatures are a great gift.

    Just found your channel yesterday while watching the Scary Bear Attacks channel….I have watched a few of these and love them! Thank you for showing us the park….it is on my Bucket List to hike Yellowstone. As someone mentioned above, you are SO CALM when you see a Grizz and you deal with the situation calm, cool & collected! That is such a excellent example for us all to follow in any bear country. I really appreciate the tips and pointers that you share….it does make a difference how you react and handle a bear sighting and can be the choice between living to tell the tale or becoming part of the food chain because you needed the “perfect selfie”. Thanks so much….A new super FAN!

    There are no such thing as friendly bears, just ones that obey gods precepts. Some do, some don't.
    Don't push your luck in bear country folks, expecially with grizzley bears. Stan has years of contact and interactions so he's not scared, and he's confident there not going to hurt him, that's just foolishness. Respect all wild animals keep safe distances, real safe.

      100 yards is the rule but you’d be a fool to think you’re “safe” because you’re 100 yards. A grizzly can cover 100 yards in 4-5 seconds… I wish they’d explain this instead of ppl thinking they’re safe, if a grizzly wants you and you’re not by adequate shelter then it’s going to get you. Luckily, they’re very tolerant of ppl and will nay attack under certain conditions (momma, surprised in close range, by food source, enter they’re personal space, etc… ), even then unless it’s a rogue bear it’s not trying to kill you just take away what they perceive as your weapon which is your mouth. Personally, I’d rather them be closer and know I’m there and let them decide the distance but still have spray ready. Just educate yourself on bear behavior before going into bear country. While they can be unpredictable being able to read the situation is critical but also understand that going into bear country is a risk that can have consequences. Great video as always

    ..... Then they're mauled and die or live a disfigured life and the bear is killed.

    There is no such thing as a friendly bear. Bears come in two flavours,...hungry and not hungry. Depending on the bears previous experience with humans any affect human interaction has in the bear's behaviour,..may cause it to get in dangerous situations and react violently. The North Georgia mountain bears visited me often and we would throw them grapes from our elevated rear deck. At times a sow and her cubs would visit. Males usually came and went alone.

Some places I hike are along the boundary areas just outside of the park. You may notice they will say “Yellowstone Ecosystem” instead of “Yellowstone National Park” and there will be no map or information about the spot I am in. The reason for that is the possibility of de-listing of the grizzly bear and opening up trophy hunting. I don’t want to give away locations. I know I have a couple videos out there that do give locations but I try not to do that. Thanks again.

    Glad it all worked out safely - could have been bad news for you and/or the bear - just out of hibernation and hungry.

    Beautiful video thanks, for those that are unfamiliar with Grizzly country. There's one absolutely 100% fact about grizzly bears. They are unpredictable. Be prepared, do your own research, and always always think for yourself. I live in northern Idaho on the Canadian Montana border. Thanks again

    Thrilling footage, thanks for sharing. That was a long hike. Did you not want to camp at the half way point?

    • @StanMills
      @StanMills  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yes I would. But camping is only allowed in designated campsites and you have to have a permit. But that is a good thing, not a bad thing.

    This was a very nice video.I came across your channel just two days ago and really enjoy seeing nature like this.I would have loved going on a hike like this a few years ago,and was in good enough condition to do so,but a stroke put a stop to that in '20.The good thing is I would have not found your channel otherwise,so good things do come out of bad things.Thanks for doing this,and I will be watching a lot more of you!

    Quite a story. Could you say a little bit more about how you moved away from the bear? What was an opportune time, when the bear started moving away from you? And did you back up slowly, while still facing the bear? Thanks.

    You need close caption. Wonderful footage. You must carry a gun. I understand getting good footage but 100 yds is nothing for a bear to cover in a open field.

    Beautiful hike. Had a bit of rain and snow. Got up high. Incredible wildlife views. I wouldn’t go so far as to say friendly grizzly. You got lucky there. They’re an aggressive species. Thanks for sharing

    How do you keep to the trail - I could not see anything that looked like a trail -
    and what kind of animals were the skulls from.
    Beautiful and amazing - thank you for sharing

    • @StanMills
      @StanMills  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Kate, that was mostly off trail hiking. The trails that you see in the video are mostly animal trails. It is not really very hard to navigate this area of Yellowstone because it is a more open area versus a heavy forested area so you are able to keep track of where you are simply by keeping track of where the river is and certain mountains. Also knowing which way is North and South is helpful. The only reason I hike off trail sometimes is because I am just out exploring God’s amazing creation. Most of those bones were bison bones. Thank you for your comments.

    Is there a more powerful animal on earth that would act so unbothered by the presence of a human? It's like respect for the bear is repaid with a lack of interest in the human. Amazing.

    Curious as to park rules regarding off trail travel? Is it always permitted? Or based on location and time of year? Thanks!

    • @StanMills
      @StanMills  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You need to know the rules before you hike anywhere in the Park. They are different everywhere depending on place and date. Right now no-one can hike in the Park is my understanding.
