  • As the title and thumbnail suggest I figured it was time to learn a new skill, so I'm trying my hand at the art of leather working. This is just a quick introduction video to my new workspace just for leather working. As always thanks for watching....
One thing I forgot to add in the video was that I wanted everything or as much as possible to be off the bench and on the wall. This is to minimize the chances of things walking around while hammering on the bench.

Im fairly new to leatherwork. Well new to taking it seriously and I've found you need a lot more than people let on in most videos. The kits on ebay and Amazon might have seemingly a lot of tools but a lot of them aren't the sizes you need and half you'll never use. Especially if you want to make a variety of stuff. Then you need a variety of leather and that's not cheap. Then the hardware in a variety of sizes and gauges and finishes and dyes and threads etc. And you need to store them all. Then miscellaneous equipment like bowls, mats, boards, brushes, sponges etc. The list goes on haha.
If you've got any handy or craft skills most will feel far too limited when starting out.
You can get away with the minimum stuff recommended in most videos but you won't get a nice end product. And you'll have very limited outcomes. Which is hard when your imagination or expectations are broad.
This is the 1st really honest beginners set up video ive found. 10/10 on this underrated video.
P.s. I spent about $2000 + Aud (roughly $1500 usd) in buying the low end tools from cheap Chinese importers and all my leather and dyes and threads and different gauge tools, mats, boards etc etc and a a couple of different half hides etc. And I see another $1000 aud minimum in my future to get more threads and dyes and finishes and hardware etc. Im making my own stitching pony and different wood bits n pieces. And I still need decent Tracing papers etc. Haha it's expensive when you want to do it right.

Hey man sometimes you just have to wing it. If it counts for any points I know what the things are called I just get a little tongue tied and brain farted when I"m on the spot.

I'm looking forward to seeing your videos of your new endeavor. I did some basic leather work long ago, and sometimes am tempted to relearn it. So I'll be interested in all you have to show.

You're 100% correct about the chemicals. I've been facing the same issue.

I make knives, up to this point mainly chef's knives. Started making other knives and I find myself needing to make sheaths. Looks like I'm about to spend a considerable amount of money lol. Nice setup you got there. You've given me lots of info and ideas. Thanks for the video!

Great Video. It's funny, I can build entire pieces of furniture and use my cnc to make some bad ass stuff, but I can't see myself doing leather work because I don't have an artistic bone in my body. I can't draw a stick figure to save my life ;)

Was trying to compute in my brain how to work on leather efficiently, ive got a small desk and was thinking this wasnt big enough, clicked on your video and it was kinda like when you hear great music, or a deep truth! Literally going to duplicate this, there are so many tools you have to have all that room, thanks alot

I made a doohickey using a thingamajig but got the wrong butch a ma pick. But thankfully it all worked out because I found the right thingy that makes the world go round and didn't break any doo dads in the process.

Don't worry about using cheap tools, they will do a good job and you can always add when you want to step up.i see you have a super skiver.I think you will find that thing to be a pain to run,Tandy has a Safety Beveler AKA skiver that works well and is much easier to control.See if you can find a splitter, you will find yourself using it all of the time.Ebay is a good place to find most anything in the way of leather tool for fair prices.Good luck and have fun!! agreed. the super skiver is terrible. ive never been able to get good result in 20yrs. the safety beveler is far more user friendly. although the french skiver (4th tool in) can achieve the same results with some practice. i prefer my skiving knife from Chartermade😁
