As Morgan Freeman said. There shouldn't be a black history month. Why should we just celebrate black people's history 31 days out of 365? It's sad. It should just be human history

Morgan also said, that in other to stop racism and segregating everything and making it all about race we should stop talking about it, and here we are, a kid born without know nothing about the real world or having been through any time period where black people actually suffered segregation and discrimination lecturing us about it. People need to stop acting like they care and celebrate those who actually did something to humanity independently of race.

For me, this is exactly what black history month is about: hearing from proudly black role models that exemplify excellence, enough excellence to earn their place in history books, and marvelling at the rich heritage and history of black people, both within our own communities and globally. I think the problem is that generally people are taught their own country's history, which in the west is generally going to be white because most westerners are white. So it's not like people are being blatantly exclusionary, we're still taught about stuff which happened to black people within our own countries, but it doesn't really make sense to teach kids about African countries when we're not teaching history about any other country than our own (and maybe USA) anyway.

    • @brotherfromanother1971

Most countries, including Western countries, have an unacknowledged and generally unknown black history. For example, in the UK is there much time spent on black Edwardian or Victorians. I know there is a history there because I listened to Stephen Fry on Audible. In Australia we don't spend nearly enough time learning about the history of Aboriginals. It is probably better now, but I hardly learnt anything about the true atrocities perpetrated by the British, and the Australian settlers, in school.

It’s very important to show the perspective of learning about black history their respective countries countries and the general world. From educating myself on black history, Many contributions have been made to the world from black inventors and black culture. It’s to showcase the culture as a being that has contributed to the world and not just white culture. In America black culture has mostly been sniffed out of history as it is not taught in its contributing and positive form. The point is to highlight that yes black people have been pivotal in history and it should be included along white history. Not just pointless dates of wars taught in general American schools that mostly highlight the tyranny of American senseless past.

I learned so much here about the war and what contributions black people made. It should be taught in schools, colleges and universities. I would like to know, who is selecting what to watch on black history month, it is a bit hit and miss with what is actually on there to watch. I was hoping for more historical, factual events to be on there, not this massaged played-down version of what has been put out there. I watched a very genuine video with Lewis Hamilton talking about how his dad could only afford a remote control car...then cobbled together the money for a go cart... I've always admired how he came up through the ranks, with the help of both his parents, I'm presuming, even though his father played a more active role in Lewis's driving education. What stuck out for me was the rise from not much money to his position. There are very few poor kids who will ever achieve the same heights, regardless of what color their skin happens to be, their gender, nationality, or religion. What you focus on is what you get in life. Focusing on skin color is never going to end prejudice because it is in and of itself highly prejudiced.

Do your research and you'll find that when he earned - earned because of his school grades, his skill in racing radio control cars - his first go kart, he lacked the RESPECT the other racers and their fathers owed him as their equal.

WHY ?? nobody can answer this question it haunts me as easy people can migrate to countries bc their skin colour is widely accepted - where as people of colour are not accepted we are targeted, labelled, pushed out, discriminated, hated, & killed just because we have colour 😔

Not all of African history is negative and just about civil rights, a lot is mega. Piye, Tarhaqa (Kush Pharoahs who ruled over Egypt's 25th Dynasty), Tarhaqa is bibically mentioned. Muhammed ibu Qu who potentially was the first person to set out to the Atlantic from the West side of it first (he needs more studies on him). Mansa Musa (richest man on planet earth to this date) and how great the Mali empire was. Moors who brought Mathematics, Astrology, Physics & Philosophy to Europe, and the Benin Empire, and more. It is not all doom and gloom. Africans were fully integrated in the Roman and Greek empires too. I love history (TH-cam has made it come alive), but, history should be about everyone African, British, French, German, Greek, Italian, Russian, Chinese, Japanese, Indians all inclusive otherwise it is can be segregated, which needs to end NOW. History should be as colourful as Lewis's helmet, because it truly is.

In schools, history should focus on how events have come to shape Britain today. This includes the slave trade and Windrush. There is simply no time to give an in depth lesson on Benin, Mali or Japan. You have to be realistic, and prioritise things that are relevant - so children can understand the society they live in. A parent, such as you, can give your child extra history lessons (its not only the schools responsibility to educate), or the child may take an interest themselves. Information is easily available.
